Splinter Cell is dead for now. Here is a memoriam.

Greatest stealth series to ever exist, on top of being one of the greatest all time series in general. Very sad generation of gaming to live in when a series like this gets butchered.

Splinter Cell died in 2006

R.I.P Splinter Cell

2002 ~ 2006

The current status of Splinter Cell is pure sh*!

Lets remember how Splinter Cell defined stealth & brought us the greatest & most true Espionage/Spy/Stealth games ever created. There is nothing else like it on the market & there may never be another

Here's a link to a well made, nostalgia infested, video tribute to all games, from the original leading up to the death of Splinter Cell ( Conviction ).

Just using this to compile a list of things from Black List

So Black List is still not exactly what i wanted but it is apparently making strides & has already put Conviction to shame in terms of what its doing.

The same action as Conviction is back ( Not a fan of that ) but it does seems to be trying to offer better stealth, more variety & options, & some previous Splinter Cell elements.

All in all it will likely offer better stealth & better action, further putting Conviction to shame. We'll see where this thing goes. It can only be better than Conviction, that i know for sure.

This is just a list of things for me to actively track what i know about Black List.

  • Hiding bodies ( obviously there must be some sort of penalties & a better emphasis on stealth )
  • Can change your footwear to be more sneaky ( again makes it obvious there must be more emphasis on the sound you make )
  • Knife
  • Cut through material
  • Whistling
  • Type of shocker ( sticky shocker? )
  • Non lethal equipment & takedowns
  • Rappeling
  • Ziplines
  • Guards take a more real approach to patrolling, like previous SC games ( where as in conviction they were always actively & agressively looking for you even when you didnt announce your presence )

Black Terd ( List ) will still be pure garbage but it will be better garbage than Crapviction.

Stealth vs action, Splinter Cell vs Conviction, the true definition of Stealth

What's the difference between a stealth game & an action game? The difference between Splinter Cell & Conviction? What is the definition of a stealth game?

The original Splinter Cell games weren't about killing people. The whole objective is to avoid the enemy completely ( stealth ). You kill people in action games, not in stealth games. Remember this quote.

There is simply no challenge in Conviction. You encounter an enemy in your way & you simply pull the trigger & move on, You get spotted, there is no penalties, you simply shoot everything in your way & move on.

There is no fun in that for someone looking for a stealth game.

The fun of Splinter Cell ( or stealth in general ) is trying to sneak through the game without ever being noticed. You had to be smart, patient & strategic, the game was challenging & rewarding. Every time you encountered an enemy you would nearly have a anxiety attack from the tension of trying to sneak by.

That was what made it fun, thats what the game was all about. People play Splinter Cell for that very reason, they play Splinter Cell to get away from action games, they play it to get away from a generic shooter gameplay.

They want that tension, the fear, that vulnerability, the anxiety, the challenge, while trying be a Ghost, never being seen or noticed, the entire way through, with near no evidence of you ever being there. That is something unique, that is called....... a stealth game.

Conviction lacks any real strategy, options, variety, anything remotely interesting, challenging, or stealthly. As i said before you kill people in action games, not stealth games.

A stealth game has a completely unique experience & gameplay. Its not about hostile combat, or killing, its about vulnerability & your ability to be a true ghost. A Ghost has many challenges & the way he solves them is not with a gun, or murder.

What happened to Splinter Cell? Where did the gameplay go?

Lets be real here. Conviction may be the most dumbed down game of all time. The biggest abomination to any franchise & a all around inferior game to its predeccessors. What's left?

Nothing. What's left is a very barebones game with near no gameplay. An extremely barebones, cover oriented action/shooter game What tragedy this game is.

It was made for the new generation of action fanatics. What a tragedy for one of the most unqiue, well made & maybe the greatest stealth game ever to be created..... to be turned into nothing more than a barebones, mindless action game.

Here is a almost complete list of things Conviction did not have:

  • Jumping
  • Split Jump
  • Crouch Landing
  • Hanging off pipe ( neck submission, aiming )
  • Defensive & non lethal equipment ( stick shockers, Ring Airfoils, etc )
  • Thermal, Electronic visions
  • Ziplines
  • Vents
  • Ladders
  • Lockpicking
  • Rappeling
  • Knife
  • Alarms
  • Swimming
  • Moving at different speeds
  • Whistling
  • Throw objects
  • Health packs ( instead of regenerating health )
  • Computer terminals
  • Satchels ( off bodies )
  • Search lights
  • Key coded locked doors
  • Hacking
  • Mines
  • Cutting throug material
  • Blowing out candles
  • Hiding bodies
  • Interogating
  • Open door stealthy option
  • Mission Ratings
  • Multiple objectives ( opportunity, optional )
  • Light meter
  • Sound meter ( great emphasis on being slow & quiet, how loud you are )
  • Emphasis on cameras & turrets
  • Penalties for killing, being seen, not hiding bodies, mission fail, etc
  • Are vulnertable & can die in one shot
  • Can GHOST through entire levels without killing ever having to kill anybody to get by
  • Melee button, Knock Out
  • Unique & varied level design
  • Levels give many intense spy/espionage moments
  • Have to find extra equpment on your own, in hidden places
  • Environment use ( turning on or off generator to catch attention, etc )

Maybe some of you can see why fans were so extremely pissed. If you have eyes you can see that is one gigantic list of features missing ( over 40 features i might add )

I hope one day we can have Splinter Cell back with all its glory
