TV Commercials and the Video Game Industry

by on

We all know that the giants of the video game industry -Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo) are trying to morph their craft into something bigger: an actual form of entertainment and not just a useless pastime for nerds. Nintendo has created the Wii and DS, easily used systems with a myriad of simple, fun games that appeal to everyone, even parents and gradparents (granted they have somewhat abandoned the hardcore gamer, but that's a totally different story and totally different arguement). Microsoft and Sony, on the other hand, have pushed XBL and PSN with online phenomenas like Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Gears of War and MGS, transforming average gamers or into junkies, while appealing to the hardcore simoultaneously. They have tried to do this by making games more like movies - they've added gripping stories complete with amazing cutscenes that keep you on the edge of your seat and slobbering for a sequel once you've beat the first edition a hundred times. However, we haven't seen the type of advertisement movies get in video games. While nearly every movie gets television exposure, video game companies have stuck mainly to online and newspaper ads. Until of course the next gen consoles came into being - it seems as though we are stuck in the midst of an epic battle between the monsters of the game industry to see who can first escort the art of video games to the next level of entertainment.

There were of course the occasional video game commercials - perhaps you'd see one for Madden, Pokemon, or maybe even Star Wars Battlefront, but these all had a couple things in common. First, they were developed by big-time publishers (EA, LucasArts) with money to throw out the window, or were already insanely popular (football, Star Wars, and Pokemon had seemd to seep out of the hardcore gamers hands by word of mouth, maye because it had been around so long). Perhaps both. Anyone in the last generation of gaming TV ads were few and far between.

Then as I mentioned earlier, the next-gen consoles were released. Now, slowly, you began to see their commercials silently sneak onto your TV screen. You see a couple Japanese dudes take a Wii around to the obscure corners of the earth, sharing it's joy with people of every race, age, and gender. Or perhaps you see a commercial for the 360, showing to the world how XBL lets you connect and play with friends and family all over the world at any time. Or, finally, you saw the graphical power of the PS3 unveiled with commercials for sports games, showing off insanely life-like player models in realistic atmospheres. A small step, but noteworthy.

Then, eventually you see commercials for games. It all started with that oh so epic scene in which MasterChief, decked out in his Spartan armor, valiantly leaps into battle against mysterious covenant forces in the middle of nowhere. Then Call of Duty came around, with commercials with spec ops soldiers running around, stuff getting blown up, and promotions for the game all being showcased on a sickly night-vision green screen.

Now, just recently I've seen another step. Like commercials for movies you never even knew existed, commercials for unpopular harcore games have emerged from the pockets of their developers. Gears of War two actually had a sneak-peak promotion on Sunday night football, showing Delta squad preparing to go into battle. It didn't show any combat, but how could they advertise that kind of gore on a nationally televised football game? Resistance 2 and Fallout 3 have commercials all over the place. The other day I even saw one for Mirror;s Edge, depitcing a high speed chase on the rooftops of a futuristic city, all from first person.

So, we all know the motives for these commercials, but what exactly will this do to the industry? Will the average gamers who stick to CoD4 and Halo 3 be enamored by how awesome Fallout 3 and Resistance 2 look? Will the person newly introduced to the addicting hobby quit playing Wii sports and actually buy a real game? Will even more people be drawn to this form of entertainment? What do you think?

Grrrr... It's all falling apart!

by on

Well, all my game systems seem to be failing me at the moment... I don't know why but it's like everything I have is falling apart on me. Haha I think it was maybe God telling me I need to get a new job (I'd said earlier I lost my paper route but didn't need a job one at the moment). Now I realize I need one, a decent paying one too. It's about time I need to start saving for future stuff (college, etc) so I'm looking in to working at Best Buy, which would work out quite nicely.

As I said earlier my 360 was down, but not with the red ring. Actually it's some grinding noise inside when you put a game in. Really wierd. So I called Microsoft and they said it was 99$ dollars to fix. Yup I need a job.

Then my laptop's motherboard got fried. It was like 500$ for a new motherboard so I just decided I'd get one for Christmas, but with my new job I may be able to buy one myself. I tried to copy the HD files onto my parent's computer but that went screwy, it kept saying I didn't have permission to copy or open the files. So I gave up. That means I'll have to rebuild my iPod's library and re-install all my new games when I get a new computer. Yup I need a job.

Sooo, that's whats happening, I'm hoping I'll have a change of fortune soon. Until then I may try to get back into Pokemon on my DS or maybe install Civ4 on my parent's comp and see if it'll work on there's (it never did work properly on mine for some reason although I had the requirements). I also got the new Eragon book, Brisingr by Chris Paolini. I hate that guy. The books have an interesting story but he basically combined Star Wars and Lord of the Rings into some new goofy fantasy world and added in a bunch of big, fancy words. Oh well, I'll see ya'll around...

Sorry Barack, I've got fear but not hope... My opinions on the election

by on

Well to tell you the truth I'm a bit anxious about our next president. I'm going to start by saying that NONE of what I'm about to say is anything against his race or supporters, but against his POLICIES. I'm in no way racist, if Condoleeza Rice or another African American I agree with on most issues, I'd gladly vote for them. I am a bit ticked at people look at him and say "Oh, he's African American, I'm going to vote for him," and don't give squat about his policies.

First off let's look at his tax plan. He's saying that eveyone who makes 200k or more a year will get a tax raise so that those of lower incomes can have more too. Well, that's fine, but it gives money to people who sit around and don't work a bit!! They get to be lazy and lead a decent life straight off a steady diet of government cheese. So the question is why would you want to work hard? Why overachieve? Why strive to be a millionaire if your wealth is being given to those too lazy to work? It's like looking at a group of innocent kids who work hard and dress up big-time for halloween on your doorstep and deciding to force them to give you some of their well-earned candy and taking it to some kid down the street who's too lazy to trick'or'treat. A bit twisted, eh? Also he's gonna give 95% of Americans a tax cut, when only 73% even pay taxes!!! That means that 22% of Americans get a tax refund check without paying their taxes. Not cool.

The only other issue I'm going to bring up is one of morality. There are many I could bring up, but I'll stick with this one issue becasue the others may cause some... animosity I don't want. Abortion. I believe this is wrong as it is, but Obama is in favor of taking it one step further. He wants to make it possible for a baby to be born, and if the mother decides she doesn't want it in that one hour then it can be killed. This is outrageous!! It's called infanticide. I can't look at that word without wretching. This is an abomination. I'm sorry if this is graphic but it's the truth. Why just an hour, you might ask? Good question! Why not a day, why not a year? What's the difference! Ugg it makes me sick.

Anyway those are a few of my concerns. Please voice your opinion, but I won't go on forever debating you. This again isn't against his race at all. I just thought I'd share some of my thoughts. I understand these are some delicate issues, but again it's my opinion.

New Banner...

by on

I got a new banner as you can see. It was exactly what I was looking for, I didn't want something with my name on it though, idk why. I had to screw around with it in paint for a while cuz it was too big but it turned out OK. What do ya'll think??

Also if there's someone out there that's really good at that type of thing if you have the time is there any possible way to take the pic of the Joker that says why so serious in like red lipstick/blood and make it say Whiteghost's blog instead. That would be awesome, don't you think? Idk if it's be possible though.

After a 3 month hiatus... The Whiteghost09 has returned... dum dum DUM

Well, I'm back. Haha I kinda disappeared without warning there. Yup football made things a bit hectic, but here I am, although a bit slow going in my gaming.

First off I lost my job. Not a big deal but I can't afford to buy myself the games I want now. I'll have to get a new one soon. Also my 360 broke, so my gaming lately is pretty much screwed... Idk, it's not rrod, it's like a grinding noise when you put a game in and the disc won't read. So if I want to play anything I have to go to a friend's house (which I most certainly will for Gears 2) or hookup my old Xbox...

As a result I will kinda be transforming what I do with my profile. Expect to see me a lot on unions (esp. Star Wars ones) and putting up blogs on other stuff like sports my opinions and stuff like that, not so much games. Also please leave a comment. :D

A Collection of the Random...

Funny stuff I have to get off my chest. Let's start off with some Chuck Norris jokes, shall we?? You probably already know most of these, but what the hec...

Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer - too bad he never cries.

Chuck Norris counted to infinity - twice.

Chuck Norris' doesn't go hunting because the word hunting incurs the probability of failure. Chuck Norris goes killing.

Chuck Norris won a staring contest with the sun.

Chuck Norris sold his soul to the devil for his rugged good looks and unparalleled martial arts ability. Shortly after the transaction was finalized, Chuck roundhouse kicked the devil in the face and took his soul back. The devil, who appreciates irony, couldn't stay mad and admitted he should have seen it coming. They now play poker every second Wednesday of the month.

When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night he checks his closet for Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris built a time machine and went back in time to stop the JFK assassination. As Oswald shot, Chuck Norris met all three bullets with his beard, deflecting them. JFK's head exploded out of sheer amazement.

Chuck Norris has already been to Mars; that's why there are no signs of life there.

They once made a Chuck Norris toilet paper, but it wouldn't take crap from anybody.

A blind man once stepped on Chuck Norris' shoe. Chuck replied, "Don't you know who I am? I'm Chuck Norris!" The mere mention of his name cured this man blindness. Sadly the first, last, and only thing this man ever saw, was a fatal roundhouse delivered by Chuck Norris.

OK, done with Chuck Norris. Let's move on, shall we?

This is a TRUE FACT - A clogged toilet is refered to as a "code four" among the "engineering" staff at the Sunspree Resort in Panama City, Florida.

I have a dream!! A dream of a world where chickens can cross the street without their motives being questioned!!! - unknown

Whoever said nothing's impossible clearly never tried slamming a revolving door.

Has anyone ever noticed that the word studying is "student" and "dying" put together?

Jim- Well, I guess I can't complain, you always keep me smiling and satisfied in the morning.

Why so Serious????

by on

Well, I went to see Batman : Dark Knight the other day, and to be honest it is one of the best movie's I have ever seen. It's gruesome (as far as the Joker's complete insensitivity to life and it's value) and a bit on the creepy side, but still amazing.

Don't worry, I won't ruin any of the story for you, but does anyone know if the story is actually directly from the comics? I tell you it is one of the most engaging, twisty plots I've ever seen. Bravo to the screenwriters/comic book authors. It is pretty much nonstop action all the way through, as the Joker is constantly blowing stuff up and wreaking havoc on Gotham in the cruelest (yet most ingenious) ways ever. AWESOME!!!

Then there is the acting. Heath Ledger is THE BEST!!! PERIOD!!! I hate to say it, but I have say his performance in Dark Knight is even better than that of Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. He (imo) is the best actor I've ever seen on the big screen in this movie. Christian Bale is also excellent, as well as Michael Cain (duhhh, when is he not good), the dude who plays Harvey Dent, and the chick who plays Rachel (sorry Idk all their names).

In short, I'd highly recommend seeing this movie to anyone (over the age of 13, sorry kiddies). Even if you don't like all the adrenaline, you MUST go see it if not just for the reason of seeing Heath Ledger's performance. Too bad he died so young. Also, as you can see, I have changed my profile pic. It is now the Joker (hey, he's kinda ghostly lookin, fits in well with Whiteghost, eh??). My profile used to have the Republic Commando theme, but at least for know it is the Joker.

So, uhhh, where was I?? Oh yeah, * licks lips * - Why so serious???

Hey Everyone...

Sorry I haven't had a blog post in a while. I was in Germany (which was awesome) for two weeks and have been lazy ever since.

Anywho I have know beaten BF BC since coming back and buying it - my reviews up, check it out if ya like. Also right before I left I beat Gears of War. However, when I got back I made the mistake of loaning it to some friends after only beating it once, now they've beat it like 5 times and I'm dying to get it back and start collecting COG tags. I told them they should pay me since I bought it and they've played it more than me, but they disregarded that comment. I also got NCAA 09 - not too much different than last year, but still an improvement. Now I'm waiting for Star Wars FU and Madden.

So, how's everyone been??

And the award for most insane replay value goes to...

by on

Wow, I have now played Lego Star Wars Complete Saga for over 38 hours. That's amazing, the developers at Tt really know how to keep you hooked.

In my last blog I said I was playing through Halo 2, Frontlines and then Blacksite Area 51. Well, I beat Halo 2 (I'd have a review but I'm not kidding there are literally thousands so I'd be wasting time) and Frontlines (this one is really geared for LIVE (which I don't have) and the 1 player campaign was really short (but decent, worth a rent) so I figured I shouldn't review that). Blacksite I'm giving up on - I get stuck at one point because I get caught in a frickin glitch every time!! The game is really crappy. A little more time in developement and it could've been pretty good. Then I rented NBA Ballers Chosen One and was totally apalled - see my review.

Anyway just FYI I think I'll rent The Bourne Conspiracy and I'll get Gears of War soon, so I'll have reviews up on those shortly. Also this summer I'm planning on going on a Final Fantasy run - I want to get FF Tactis this month and FFIV the next.

I'm still playing Rockband - I'm on hard level.

Well, I guess that's that.

More Games!! Gimme More!!

by on

The past like 4 days have been very eventful (as far as gaming goes). First off I borrowed Halo 2 from a friend and am playing throught that now (it's awesome btw). I've decided to rent or borrow the Halo games since I don't want to spend the money on LIVE and I know that they aren't worth buying just for the campaign.

Then on Sunday I borrowed Blacksite Area 51 and Frontlines Fuels of War as well. I'll get started on those as soon as I'm finished with Halo. I'm expecting Frontlines to be pretty good, and Blacksite to be pretty crappy (glitches).

Then on Sunday I had a sleepover with my small group. After a couple of hours of b-ball (in which I owned, we have a 6-5 leader so me and him had some Chris Paul - Tyson Chandler stuff going) and a late trip to Perkins (it was like 2:00 AM and there were a frickin buttload of people still in there) we went back and played some Super Smash Bros. Brawl on my small group leaders Wii (I know, I already got that's what she saided like 5000 times for saying stuff on accident like that). He borrowed it from someone else for this occasion. No one is an avid gamer like me so they didn't know how awesom this game was. So I get in on the first round and I choose Pit. I totally expected to be bad at it since it was my first time playing, however, I completely OWNED with Pt. He's awesome. My strategy was to fly around in the high parts, owning everyone who came to my territory and every now and then going down to use my spinny attack and shoot my gay arrows" (as dubbed by my friends, just cuz I poned with them). So I only didn't win like 2 matches (out of about 15) I played. So I went to bed, come back downstairs and whoa, they're still playing. We actually got the award for 10 hours of continual play. It was awesome.

Then yesterday I bought Rockband with just a guitar. IMO the drums are kinda stupid - I'm a real drummer and I'm in a band (however unknown) and having to play a choreographed beat is like total crap. There's no improvisation, which is like half the fun of playing the drums. Plus they're like 70$. So I just got a used Rockband guitar. I'm gioing to go jam to that in a little bit.

So, anyway, that is what has been going on in the gaming life of the Whiteghost.

PS- I can't wait for Force Unleashed!!
