Top 10 "Don't Judge a Game by its Cover" games

Have you ever heard the saying “don’t judge the book by its cover?” Wait, what am I saying, of COURSE you have. This also goes for videogames. You know, games, especially back in the NES/SNES days, the cover art was just so… weird. And this has inspired me to make my Top 10 “Don’t judge a videogame by its cover art” games. For this list, the cover art has to either make no sense whatsoever or not work with the game well. And these are not the worst or the most random ones, just my favorites. Okay? Okay. Let’s go! (IF YOU WANT THE FULL EFFECT, START FROM THE BOTTOM!)

Phalanx

This game is a sidescrolling shooter in the style of Contra. I am not making this up. I don’t know why Kemco decided to have a banjo playing redneck on their box art, but it’s hilarious! CONGRATULATIONS Phalanx! You won a list that you probably didn’t want to win in the first place! Yay…

Karnaaj Rally

I honestly don’t know. I think it’s a racing game, but… uh… I… uh…

The Rocketeer

Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, get ready for the next superhero game! In this game, you will fly planes in circles, shoot soldiers, and that’s about it! Here is… “THE ROCKETEER!” *no one applaudes*

Irritating Stick

Ever heard of this game? Doubt it, but after reading this title and seeing the box art, I REALLY want to play it. You might think this is a fighting game or… something, but it’s actually a party game where you rub your irritating stick on things. That sounds really dirty.

Ghost Lion

Oh look! Another pedophile! Isn’t that GREAT! *sarcasm* This is a Dragon Warrior style RPG, being that it has the “enemy up in your face” kind of thing (You probably have no idea what that means, but look at a video of both of these games. You’ll see.) And the only ghost lion in the game is the final boss. So… yeah. Fun fact. You’re welcome.

Dragon Quest

What do you think of when you look at this? A side scrolling medieval style beat em up with dragons? It’s a Final Fantasy style RPG with very cute art style, if I may add. This is my favorite box art on this list cool wise. If I was making a “Top 10 Old School Box Art” list, this would definitely be up there. But, that’s not this list. Sorry, “Dragon Warrior,” sixth place for you!

Mega Man (1995)

Is it just me, or does Mega Man look like a pedophile on this box art? I honestly don’t know. You be the judge. Either way, HE LOOKS SO STUPID!!!

Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing

Here’s some more box art that looks epic, but instead of still having fun, you’re stunned at how bad the game is. The game looks like blazing down highways, running from cops, a really fun open world sandox game, if I may add. Instead the only things you’re running from are glitches. Lots and lots of glitches. And by the looks of things, you’ll never escape.

Bomberman

Holy crap, doesn’t this look epic?!?! I can just imagine everyone in the 80s going to the game store, seeing this box art, thinking to themselves the thing I eloquently said at the beginning of this paragraph, buying it, playing it, and being disappointed because it’s not at all what they were thinking! I can imagine them thinking, “I WANTED SPACE ALIEN THROWING BOMBS AT PEOPLE! NOT PUZZLE GAME BULLCRAP!” Then they play it and have fun. Then everything’s good.

E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial

The first ever movie game that almost single handedly destroyed the gaming industry has a surprisingly innocent cover. It has E.T. himself, his little human friend, the phone, and even the glowing finger. But, the only thing in the game that even closely resembling the beloved movie is the name. Falling through invisible holes? Not in the movie. Getting captured by guards? Not in the movie. Besides the name and the box art, the only thing resembling E.T. is the music that plays and even that isn’t great. People should’ve realized that then and there they should stop making move tie-in games. But nobody listened. *sigh*
