I went to see V for Vendetta yesterday. It was quite the movie. Everything I wanted it to be and more. I am a big fan of the graphic novel and was really waiting for this. For those of you who have not read it I'll fill you in on the plot. The story is set in an alternative-future England where nuclear weapons have been removed from the country which spared it from a nuclear attack in a limited nuclear war that left the country mostly physically intact. An extremely fascist single-party state has arisen, called Norsefire that maintains control of the country through massive food shortages, government-controlled media, secret police, a planned economy, and concentration camps for racial and sexual minorities. This government seems to have everything Nazi Germany had in my opinion. When the series begins the concentration camps have been closed due to the fact that they have finished there work and the public is complacent until "V" an anarchist terrorist dressed as Guy Fawkes begins an elaborate, very violent and theatrical campaign to bring this government down. This is in the graphic novel. The movie differs substantially mostly in the setting. It is no longer 1983/4 but 2020. The government also comes into power not during a limited nuclear war but through a bio-chemical war but this works well into the story. I give this movie a 10/10 and recommend it to everyone.
A picture of "V" the main character of both the movie and the graphic novel. This is from the movie.
