I used to get ringing in my ears when everything was silent, but not tinnitus level.
On a side note, have you ever read The Barbed Coil? It's a great book with a main character who has tinnitus. I just read it recenntly.
Also, avoid loud, highpitched noises and excitement or stress, this can cause it to flair severly.
Lastly, and I know I'll take heat for this, get someone from a church that believes in healing to pray for you. Some don't believe in healing, but I've seen a guy walk in on crutches and out swinging them in the air, among other things.
