10 years on Gamespot and the future

I've seen a lot of staff and fellow users come and go. But i have lingered on this site. I've been trying to make the places i have posted in a great place to be in. Even though people i have liked have left, i've still met some great people. I've been gaming now for 20+ years and i am happy to be a gamer, now more than ever. To have this easy access to talk and share ideas is awesome.

My first gaming console was the original Gameboy and never got to play the original NES. But i eventually got the SNES where i played Yosh's Island, International Super Star Soccer Deluxe and Bubsy. I then saved up money with my brother in a piggie bank and bought the N64. I got Super Mario with it. I remember my amazment just going around jumping and climbing trees in 3D. I eventually got Mario 64, which is still my favorite Mario Kart. I then eventually saved up PS2 by myself for two years and found my favorite game(with Mass Effect 2) in Final Fantasy X. I also finally got a dvd player where i could play all my dvd's that i got. I later got Dragonball Z Budoka 2 & 3, Battlefront and other awesome games. I got late into the seventh gen. I got the 360 in 2008, where i've had a lot of games. In 2012 i finally got the PS3, it took me that long because of the PS3 did cost 1000$ when it was released. And it's been my main platform since. I also bought a PS4 where i've had a blast, but still waiting for the games to come out for it.

I've also gotten a Gameboy Advanced, 3DS and Vita. But they haven't been my main platforms of gaming.

Now that i think back on all that and now to the future. I still think that we will have consoles in the future. I still think there will be one after this. It was the same discussion last generation where everyone called consoles dead before the new generation was launched. I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. I think they will become more open to so called gimmicks or additional hardware. I still think that games will come to consoles because we like having that type of experience. The PC will always be there, it's always going to be a choice. The consoles however are something special to me, even though that i have gone back forth from consoles and pc from time to time for various reasons.

What do you guys see in the gaming future after this generation?

Trust your own judgment fellow gamers

I've said this in a blog before, but trust your own judgment gamers. You don't have to trust anyone else of what you might like. Look at the gameplay, join the beta if possible. See if you like a game that way. That's how i decide which games to buy. Also not all of us need to continue enabling these pre-order scams. We have seen time and time again that if publishers and console manufacturers.

Even though some of you might like a game like Alien Isolation, the business practice of letting DLC be part of the pre-order deal. That is total crap. Some games lifting the embargo on launch day and sending review copies late. Also last year when the X1 was revealed with DRM, the used games blockage and the forced Kinect, it made people angry. Microtransactions, content taken out the game and sold as DLC. There are loads more.

Even with all of this crap, you should trust your own judgment. Don't take reviews as ghospel either. Take all of the information you get from gameplay, trailers, etc. and form your own opinion. Publishers want to earn money, don't let them trick you into buying a game you won't like. Trust what you like and what you want to play. Don't let hype and flashy trailers get you. If you can, try to play the demo or the beta if possible

Too little patience, too high expectations

I've been gaming for 20 years now. I've seen consoles come and go many times. The internet was not a thing until the last generation, where it blew up and took use of it. I've seen gamers on several places i visit to talk about games that they complain about the lack of games in the first year of this generation. It seems that many people forget that during all of the generations it has been like this. There has never been that one console seller in the first year, except for Super Mario 64.

I would personally say we've already had a lot of games that have been great already. There may not be a lot of exclusives, but the landscape has change. Multiplatform games are more important now than they have been before. Games also cost more to make now compared to before, companies want to put out games that make money. Companies want to make the money back aswell.

The developers want to make the best games possible, but they can not make that if gamers in general are too unpatient. If we want some amazing experience, we will have to wait some years to actually play the amazing games these developers have created. But we as gamers must be patient for this. We can't just want the next best thing just because it comes out every year. Be patient, the games will come to this generation.

Remakes of games i would like to see

During the last year, we have seen a lot of remakes of games that haven't been out that long. I don't really blame them for doing it, because it's an easy cash grab for companies. People should vote with their wallets, i sure am. I don't mind them, i just personally think that there are older games that could be redone. This should not come of the cost of new games and new ideas. This would hurt the industry and gaming.

I would personally love to get games from the 5th and 6th generation made for the new consoles. It would be possible seing how many games got ported to PS3/360/Wii. I would like to see games like Battlefront 2 and other great games from that era get the same treatment. Final Fantasy would have lots of potential to be revived with an HD treatment for example.

The games could just be re-released digitally to make it more affordable for the companies aswell. Seing how most people would love to hunt trophies and experience older games with updated graphics aswell. With the technology today it wouldn't be hard to do either. Final Fantasy X sold very well last year and was even cross-buy.

Reviews should be be redone compared to the current standard

Modern reviews should be done in a different way in my view. The way they are done today is outdate in my view. Some games are fine to review and it won't be changed after you have played through it. New modern games however seem to have a life after it is released.

New modern games have a longer life than they had before. They are no longer just finished when you get them out of the box. You can download games digitally and there are tons of games in different genre's with different games. Gaming is so big and diverse now compared to 10-20 years ago that journalists should do the same. The videogame art has changed as a whole.

Destiny, Sports games, Project Spark, League of Legends, MMO's, Minecraft, etc. are all games that have a life after it is released. Those games should get at least an update review after it has been out for a while. This is something some sites have done like IGN. But they are few and far between them. Games don't get a second look from the same reviewer unfortunately. The first review often states of what they think of the sites think of the game when it is released. The game might have been that good or bad at launch, but it might have gotten worse or better after launch. It is something that needs to be tackled in the industry in my opinion

The sites have to follow suit of what the industry is, and now stick to what it was years ago. When you got a game and it was static after that. The games change more in today's industry than ever. They continue to get support long after it's released. The DLC for games mostly don't get reviews either, and it should reflect the game as a whole aswell.

How hype can make or kill a games reputation

I have been pondering about this subject for a very long time, but recently it made me wonder even more. Destiny and Shadow of Mordor have been the complete opposite when it comes to hype. Shadow of Mordor has reilied on the word of mouth and just showing off the game rather than big TV commercials that Destiny has had.

Destiny has been in the spotlight since Sony revealed the PS4. Everyone knew that this was Bungie teaming up with Activision. It was going to be a big game in the industry. Shadow of Mordor had more of a discreet reveal where they released videos online and had the big reveal on E3.

Because Destiny has been on everyone's mind, people might have thought that it was something different than it was. People played the alpha and the beta knew what kind of game they were playing and were surprised when it was the same when it was released? All the reviews, in my humble opinion seem not to get what the game really is. MMO's get away with mundane tasks when you are level up and give you a deeper experience when you are done leveling.

People are acting like this is the exact same game as Halo, instead of for taking it what it is. That's what people have done more so with Shadow of Mordor. It's a great game so far from what i have played, and it deserves the recognition. But would it have gotten the praise if it had the same hype as Destiny. I personally don't think so.

Hype can kill of a game when it comes to enjoying a game and these are just two examples that i think got a different treatment just because of it. I don't know if i am just rambling on, but i think that some games are just getting an unfair treatment because of expectations that make the game to something that it isn't

Timed Exclusive Debacle

During Gamescom Rise of The Tomb Raider was revealed to be a timed exclusive. It seems that the industry is shifting towards trying to get timed exclusive content or exclusive in game content for their platforms. We saw this during the last generation with Call of Duty for the 360. But it does seem that this generation will put more emphasis on this.

In my humble opinion it seems that this is more of an annoyance to me than a good strategy. Being forced to wait just because of a deal between two companies is something that really irks me. I get that the reason they do this is to sell consoles and earn money. Because the bottom dollar is what really matters for a company. But you don't want to alienate a big part of your fans either.

It's a smart move from Microsoft, but a bad one from Square Enix. They have basicly let the two biggest user bases not buy their product on PC and PS4. Which isn't a good idea in my opinion.

Do you guys believe this is a good strategy from any company or platform to do?

My take on GamerGate

During the last few weeks, gamers have been waged war against by the press in the gaming media. This is unfortunate. Mostly because they make these baseless accusations against gamers without doing actually doing research about the subject. They have clearly taken sides with developers and publishers by saying gamers are dead.

The media is a tool for consumers to be a voice for them and guide them. This has not been the case with GamerGate. Sites like Kotaki, Destructoid, Polygon, Rock Paper Shotgun, Escapist and others have taken a clear stand against gamers. This issue will not go away when it has been a question for a long time that the ethics and moral in the industry is questionable. Journalists don't even want to take up the discussion, but they rather want to form their own narrative protecting their friends.

With the recent discovery of that journalists from different sites have collaborated on GamerGate and the whole Zoe Quinn issue is despicable. I just think the media is better than this and hopefully realize their mistakes
