Ape Escape, Alundra (ignoring Alundra 2, get a true sequel),Dark Cloud,Folklore,Sly Cooper (this is probably in the works I'm guessing),Wild Arms, Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal, Medieval.

Yep, it is by far the Best PSX rpg in my opinion, not even Knocking Final Fantasy VII at all because I love it, but as far as storyline goes, this game is great and I haven't seen too many games come near it in this aspect.  The biggest complaints you will see will be about the pacing on disc two, there is a reason for that.  Squarsoft wanted to finish development at the time for Final Fantasy VIII and they took some of the funding for Xenogears to go ahead and do that (Which is another reason for me to not like FFVIII I think), so the game content on disc 2 was replaced with a lot of dialogue, and you'll be able to see the pace difference instantly.  STILL, even with that flaw, the game is fantastic.  This game also have one of the best soundtrack I have ever seen.

This game is my second favorite RPG of all time, with only Chronotrigger beating it for first (and I sometimes flipflop this as I tend to change my time with these two titles. )  DEFINITELY recommend the game.

Well I see you have Persona 3 so I would also pick up Persona 4. Nier is one of those games you will either like or do not like, but imo it was the better RPG that Squar Enix made compared to FFXIII and Resonance of Fate, so I would check that game out as well.

Um, okay? I can see how your theory might be a factor in PnP RPG, Live Action RPG, and to an extent, MMORPG, but I don't see these as a rule of thumb for PC and console RPGs.

Looking at the games you play and your willingness to get any consoles, here are my suggestions:

Earthbound (SNES)

Xenogears (PSx)

Chrono Cross (PSx)

Legend of Mana (Definitely for you, Psx)

Any of the games from the Tales series (various consoles)

Star Ocean Series (SNES, PS1, Ps2, PS3)

Grandia (PSX)

Persona 3-4 (PS2, PS3)

Valkyrie Profile (PSX)

Dragon Quest VIII (PS3)

So ultimately if you still got that SNES laying around or can get your hand on a backward compatible PS3/PS2, you should be okay :)

I need a giant adventure RPG, with openess and customization and loot galore. Skyrim is always decent but I was hoping for something new.

Guild Wars 2 Is fun, but hard to get back in to for some reason.

I really dont want to play wow again but...there's always that nagging in the back of my head thats like "c'mon, its what you need"

The Old Republic is great with story and stuff, but also hard to get into the F2p, and if im gonna pay, im conflicted between that and wow.

I've played Morrowind like...a billion times. I cant even put a number on the hours...i know it like the back of my hand.

So, RPG or MMO, doesn't matter. what matters in a new adventure, openess that feels like i could go anywhere and do anything.

Yes i've played all fallouts, KOTOR, ME, KoA:R, just hoping there's something I missed

supercredit
Try Kingdom of Amalur, Two worlds II, Fallout 3 or New Vegas. They seem to fit the descriptions you're looking for.

Well it depends on the RPG. When you play an RPG with videogames, there are 3 ways to go about doing it, either playing an establish character with an established personality (I.E. Cloud from Final Fantasy) or by taking an established character and making him/her make choices (Shepard) or by making your own characters. Roleplaying can mean different things, it isn't just you deciding the role for a character, you could also be playing a character's role (if that make since). Look at Actors and actresses. Actors and Actresses have been roleplaying before the RPG genre was even created. When they do so, they tend to play an established character with established dialogues and so on. That is a form of roleplay.

Consoles and PC RPGs over the years have developed another form of Roleplays where we get to choose our charactrer's their traits, and the way we play them. That too is a roleplay, though one with more freedom. Lately we have been getting a combination of what I been talking about, Established characters with choices we can choose to make for them. Do I think it is hurting the RPG industry? Nope, if anything it is adding more variety to a genre that sometimes take too long to improve compare to the other gaming genre. It just another way to play games, I don't forsee all RPGs going towards this route (Look at the Elder Scroll series for example). There's just as much room for these type of games as there are for the other tradition ones we're use to. I welcome having MORE options in how I play RPGs.

[QUOTE="siveon"]

[QUOTE="squalls_revival"] I disagree, I think you didn't see the truth behind the story. The plot elements, it is very relevant to the world we live in today and I would say it's the FF7 of the 21st century.squalls_revival

Honestly I didn't see the so called truth behind the story. I thought it was a boring game with whiny characters (actually like FF7, IMO.) If you are looking for a Diablo-like RPG OP, I suggest Torchlight 1 & 2. Both are fun in different ways but has a very weak story. If you care the PSP has a good RPG library that attaches to story very well, like Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea (it's a comedic story, but it's still interesting to follow.) If you liked the Elder Scrolls games, I would suggest Fallout 3 and NV. Heck get Fallout 1 and 2 as well. And if you ever care, I suggest the DnD RPG's like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and you can never go wrong with Planetscape: Torment. Dragon Age: Origins is good, but be wary of it's sequel. I don't remember many good story-driven games (good stories anyway).

most people who dislike final fantasy games have huge egos and want things they consider "cool". Of course you can't see the beauty in it. I'm sure you don't see any beauty in a sunset as well.

Woah there man, you're sound more like a fanatic than a fan. A fan can love a series but see the flaw in it and want to see improvements (thus making the item they are a fan of better in the long run) where a fanatic madly defends that same product, despite its flaws and thus in the long run make that product worst. I loved the Final fantasy series all the way up to 10 (well minus 8, didn't like 8), After that, anyone who has been playing the series for a long time could clearly see that it was going down hill. FFXIII is a prime example of this, and FFXIV (though they're attempting to fix it) just further goes to show just how far this series has fallen.

If you like the story, good on you, but a lot of people (myself included) did not like the story. It also doesn't do good to insult someone by saying silly things like "You didn't know the truth behind the story" and things of that nature. Oh and by the way, even if this WAS the case, (which it was not), a true story writer should be able to deliver his/her story without confusion, so saying something like this would just support the other writer's point even more. It always irks me when people think something is wrong with you or that they're better than you when they like/dislike something you don't. Learn to accept that not everyone will think the way that you do, and instead of trying to put those people down, try looking at it from their point of view, it makes you more intellegent than actually thinking you're smarter than them because they don't share your point of view...

Hm, looking at the game kind of reminds me of those old-school mud games from back in the days. I'll be honest, being that this will be on an Android device, I think it will have a niche group of people who would be interested at the most just from the text interface you're going for alone. That being said, this is an RPG and if the story is great, then everything else doesn't matter. So as it stands right now since you don't have the story just yet, first impression isn't the best, but with a good story for your game I think with some hard work you could be successful. Have you thought about doing a kickstarter to see just how interested people are? To me that would be the best way to kill two birds with one stone (gain more interest and also gain funding for your game). If it is successful then you know people will support your game, if not, then you know not to waste too much time. I think it would be better to do something like this than come to a random rpg message board to find out...Anyways man, I wish you nothing but success with this project!
