Well, speaking AS a vet (Afghanistan), I'd have to say winning or losing doesn't really matter as far as a video game.
Seriously, we don't do this job for the thanks (or lack thereof), and even then, if you're looking to be remembered by a game you're doing it wrong. I personally had no problems with accurate and inaccurate portrayals of the military in COD4- it's just a fun game, take it at that.
I think the issue is that the previous Vietnam games out there were just mediocre at best for other reasons. Now as technology has caught up and CoD is starting to get a little stale with WWII (IMO), I think a Vietnam game could be cool. Use some of the Tech that Far Cry and Crysis pioneered to make the dense jungle environments and it could be fun, at least from the special forces side. Lots of sneaking and stuff.
BUT gamers want variety, and there simply weren't the large-scale tank and vehicle battles and such that have become the hallmark of games these days. The developer would probably have to rely on smaller engagements, and unless the story and gameplay can hold up the lack of variety, it may not work.
I wouldn't mind seeing a Korean war game. Move on from WWII and open up some new battlefields of Korea- could be cool, especially with modern envronmental effects.
