Definitely the Baldur's Gate Series. No RPG has matched it for epicness, immersiveness, and quality of story in the decade since it came out. Some of the most memorable characters from any RPG series are found within BG. It's also the only RPG that, when I finished it, gave me a real sense of having gone on an incredible journey and I was genuinely both exited and sad when it finally came to it's rip-roaring conclusion in Throne of Bhaal.
If you pick it up (and I strongly recommend you do), you'll need to cut it some slack - it's a 10 year old game and the graphics show it. Fortunately, they're 2D and age better than if the game used 3D. The audio is still quite good, and the story is just as compelling as it was 10 years ago.
You get to control a party of 6 characters....definitely more than any modern RPG I've played which all seem to shrink your party down to between 1 and 3 characters. Even Baldurs Gate's spiritual successor (Dragon Age) only lets you control four (booo!).
Combat can be quite tactical and will require you to put some thought into how to win, particularly when facing off against powerful bosses or minibosses.
I've been PC gaming since the 80s and in all that time, the BG series is in my top 5 favorite games of all time to this day, and by far my #1 RPG.
You can pick up a compilation pack from amazon that has the entire series (BG, tales of the sword coast, BG II, and Throne of Bhaal) for $35 which is a great deal!
