I am old.

by on

I feel like I'm getting old. I have no time to play games anymore. Wahhh!

There it is. Rant over. Ok, maybe not.

I'll elaborate for you. I'm just about to finish my final year at University (Only 2 more stress filled months to go!) and whilst it's been a blast, it's totally destroyed my gaming life. You're probably thinking: 'But Squeaky, you're doing Games Design, so you must be playing games all day!', but believe me, I most definately am not. Which as a massive gamer, totally sucks.

You know how people finish doing something and all they need is a 'nice, long bath'?, well all I need is a nice long gaming session!

Do We Just Love To Hate?

by on

I've just read the article on the front page about the newest installment in the Final Fantasy series: Lightning Returns, and I've got to say I'm pretty shocked at some of the comments.

I'm going to be honest here and say that I have only played FF13 and FF13-2, (but I absolutely loved them and clocked up well in excess of 200 hours playing time on them) so you're well within your rights to tell me I know nothing about the series and so on, but here's my opinion anyway,

A lot of people on this and many other sites claim to be 'huge' fans of game series', just like the aforementioned Final Fantasy games or other household names such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry yet they seem to absolutely slam any new installment.

It's therefore common sense to say that they simply cannot be a fan of that series. They are a fan of one or two particular games, just like I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy, I'd say I'm a fan of the two games I have played and loved.

So going back to the title of this post, I think it's fair to say that some people don't like how a series is going and so have to replace what would have been their love for a new game into a 'love to hate'. They just can't help themselves.

So I think that with the news that game sales have fallen by something like a quarter in the past year, we have to embrace new games and just enjoy them for what they are. If you are one of these people who moans at every new game that comes out, I have a message for you:

You are ruining the games industry, not the people that make Call of Duty or any other popular game.

Youare scaring developers into making clones of their previous games and not experimenting for fear of bad sales. Despite what you think, a lot of developers do listen to serious suggestions/complaints from fans.

As a community of gamers, we need to inspire growth and creativity in the industry, not prevent it.

A Giant Falls...

So I imagine most of you (UK'ers at least) have heard the news about GAME going into administration. This both saddens me and instills in me some hope.

While I do feel Game is an integral part of the gaming community in the UK (I regularly go to town with friends and hang out in Game looking for some cool pre-owned deals), I think this will be a chance for independant retailers to claw back some of their lost market share. This could mean even more cool places to go to for games and a much wider choice which can only be a good thing!

Everyone Loves A Re-Watch!

So, it turns out my girlfriend has never seen Heroes! This had to be remedied so we're watching the first series through this week. (What I really want is the Game of Thrones boxset but I want to read the book first and I'm only halfway through that so far!) Anyone else 're-watched' anything lately?

First 2012 Update!

by on

Hey guys,

I received a lot of games over Christmas period (which I'm really grateful for), and I've slowly been working through them whenever I'm back home from University. Here's what I got:

-Gears of War 3 (Completed)

-Skyrim

-Assassins Creed Revelations

-Batman Arkham City (Completed)

-Bulletstorm (Completed)

-Rage

-Fallout: New Vegas

I'll be taking a year out of University from June onwards to do a year in work. Hopefully it means I'll be able to play a lot more games and finish some old ones such as Dead Island, Final Fantasy 13 etc. (That's if my girlfriend lets me use the TV!)

Do you enjoy writing?

Hey guys,

I hope this isn't classed as an advert, but I was wondering if any of you would like to do some writing for a gaming blog I run?

Anything gaming related is welcome. The site hasn't been updated for a while because I've been busy with University but I'm hoping if I can get a solid list of contributors we can jumpstart the site again.

Let me know if you're interested either in a comment or a pm.

Here's the site:http://chokepointreviews.wordpress.com/

Please remember Chokepoint is only for fun and for gaining writing experience and as such there is no payment for contribution, only satisfaction of getting your piece of writing posted up online!

Cheers,

Squeaky

New Game Day!

by on

So I got payed for some work I did recently. I decided to splash out on a brand new game to play when I'm home from Uni occasionally so off I went to my local Morrisons and bought myself a copy of Dead Island.

Dead Island

After playing for only a few hours, I found myself completely immersed. I can already tell that this game deserves the mostly high ratings it's received. It combines my favourite type of horror creature with some really solid rpg elements such as customizable weapons, skill trees and a levelling system.

Anyway, I'll give you guys an update in a few weeks when my semester ends. I'll be buying a nice stack of games that I've missed since being at University!

Letting you guys know how I'm doing.

Well guys, I'm not going to lie to you, I did forget about this place for a while. That wasn't intentional though, it's a really cool community here but as some of you may know, I run my own gaming blog now and that sucks up a lot of free time along with the fact that I've started up Uni once again.

I'm going to try and post here once in a while still to let you know what's going down with all my latest purchases and stuff.

So I went to HMV the other day. Not for any particular reason, just to browse I guess. I actually ended up buying three Black Sabbath CDs and Wolfmother's debut album!

In terms of games, the only thing I've bought recently is FIFA 12. With games in mind though, we've nearly finished our first proper game release over at Chokepoint Games so I'll post a download link whenever that's ready for you guys.

My band is doing quite well also. We had a big headline gig at the main venue here and it all went down well. We do have some stuff up on youtube etc if anyone's interested.

Thanks guys, cya soon.
