In the whole "reduced heat & reduced power consumption" area, SSDs are definitely the way of the future and Sony knows it. I have no doubt that the next generation of PS3 will have them (kind of like the PS2 eventually going slim and having an internal modem). However, the current stats (shown in the above article) and price prove that it's just not worth it yet. Plus, if you do it yourself, you void the warranty. So, I reckon it's a judgement call.

I love it! I'm definitely trading in our original for the new one. The main thing that got my attention (believe it or not), was the fact that they made it lighter. The weight of the current model was my biggest problem. Upgraded memory, faster load times and the video output? Damn right I'm getting one! Granted, if they don't release the composite cables over here, I'll just get them from Japan. No biggie. ^^
