You can also find the general location of where they are by going to the map and scanning.  They'll show as red dots, gold bricks as yellow dots, and citizens in peril as purple dots.  The red bricks in Gotham usually require a villain, usually Joker, Lex Luthor, and Riddler from what I have encountered to get to them.
