It's kind of stunning that we're already this far into January, but here we are, about 2/3rds of the way through it. As expected, the warm weather we had been receiving for a week or two faded a bit, and we got another snowstorm yesterday. I expect things to be off-and-on snowy for the next couple of months, though I expect the humidity to return a bit as Spring works its way in. I miss warm, rainy days - I am looking forward to Spring this year.
The other day I finally got TV in my man-cave, sort of. My girlfriend's mom bought a 'ClearTV' antenna, and now we have some free television channels in this spare room, for the TV that isn't hooked up to cable. We get a couple of channels with it - the big ones; CBS, ABC, NBC; PBS, MeTV, My Network TV, Qubo (for kids), Bounce (for minorities), to some extent Ion, and a few other channels and alternate versions of other channels. There doesn't seem to be any FOX network, though I could be wrong. The main motivation for getting this is that now whenever we exercise on the treadmill, we have something to help occupy us.
Work has been alright. I had a crappy day there where our department had to do something other than our usual job, and I felt like I was thrown into things and it was kind of confusing, and we had no time to get everything done. Since then I've been running late a lot, but the days have been going pretty smoothly. I had my schedule changed a couple of times for this week, and got my days off moved further ahead in the week. I also found out I'll be getting the weekend of the 1st off, which is pretty cool.
My girlfriend found out yesterday that her workplace will be getting a major competitor moving in just a few blocks down the street from them. She and her coworkers are concerned - she's been there for about 15 years, and many of her coworkers have been there for a long time as well, and they've been saying for years that if this big chain of stores moved in locally they might be in trouble. I'm a little concerned for them myself, and I'm not sure what would happen if my girlfriend's workplace just closed up shop. She is already thinking about the scenario. Of course, maybe when it happens the place will actually be too expensive or overrated, and won't prove to be a major problem for them. Who knows. But it currently sounds like her workplace is a bit concerned, and since they are having a meeting today, I wonder if this news will come up.
I came up with a list of things I'd like to do throughout 2014, and wrote it down in the kitchen on the chalkboard. My girlfriend liked all of the ideas as well, and I'd really like to try working towards making a lot of this stuff happen. There's places I'd like to go and things I'd like to do in 2014, but of course a major factor in all of this is money. And new finances can be unpredictable this far in advance.
The first thing I'd like to do is probably the easiest thing on the list - to take us all out to eat at Applebees. We used to go there more often when I first moved here, and it was kind of nice - I enjoyed it. We went maybe 6 times or so in 2011/2012. Haven't been back since. So I'd like to at least go once this week, and maybe try to get back to making it a thing we do throughout the year again.
I have maybe 10 things I want to do this year on my list, with a few of those things being recurring events I'd like to do multiple times throughout the year, such as going to Applebees, and going for regular walks. I didn't want to plan things out too much, but I tried to give myself some realistic goals for the year. Places I could, in theory, actually go and visit on my budget. Some of these things will really require some saving up though.
My biggest goals for the year are 1) to visit Niagra Falls on a day off, possibly stay overnight. 2) to possibly go to a big convention out-of-state for a few days (depending on which other goals I end up pursuing this year and what the total cost of those outing comes to) 3) to go to New Jersey to visit my girlfriend's sister's family for a few days. and 4) to take a big trip and drive out West for a few days, possibly to go to Yellowstone Park or Albuquerque, or something. So, I'm hoping to accomplish as much as I can this year.
It is snowing outside right now. I really can't wait for Spring to get here...
