@picho86 @Nightwindutz Sadly, you're right. So it all comes down to personal opinion: is this approach an inconvenience? And if so, how much of an inconvenience? To me, it's important enough to make me stay away (for now at least). Obviously, if Bioware will come with something really outstanding or if EA brings out something cool with a new Dead Space (unlikely) and they will feature an "always-online", I might re-evaluate my position. However, I happily own the previous Sim City and the new one poses more problems than the rewards it offers.

The man is entitled to his opinion. I'm entitled to not buy EA anymore. I was wary of the new Sim City and I think I earned a pat on the back. If the backlash against EA and Blizzard isn't enough, perhaps the man needs to see sales drop some more.

Even Steam allows offline play and luckily for me Rocksteady dumped Microsoft's dreadful Games for WIndows Live for the new Batman Arkham Origins.

Carmack is off, way off.

The backlash wasn't against having content online, it was against how it was done. While some people were against a Steam-like system, many others weren't. The common ground was the need to always check online (the 24h thing). Steam allows you to play offline nicely.

The comparison with GPS is unwarranted. On a phone the GPS isn't always on and you have the option to turn it off. Xbox One, on the other hand, must always have Kinect connected, otherwise it won't work.

If phone were to have GPS on mandatory simply to work, I'll be up in a rage in a blink.

"but even the $8.5 million Ouya raised as part of its Kickstarter campaign pales in comparison to the revenue taken in by current home consoles" - I'm not sure what you're comparing there? The 8.5 million is the initial investment, not revenue.

You're comparing Ouya with consoles who had 4 generations on the market. How many did Ouya have? 0, it's not out there yet. However, the fact they pulled 8.5 million from the general public as an investment before they had a product should show the potential of the market. However, the real test will the be effective launch and the games available on launch.
