Good intentions

2010... It's going to be a good year with Final Fantasy XIII, White Knight Chonicles, Star Ocean, Gran Turismo 5 (I hope), Bad Company 2 and MAG coming the first quarter of the year I am saving up money now to be able to buy them when they come out...

The problem is the rule I set myself. Finish one game before you buy another. So I have been playing like mad for the last couple of weeks so I have all the time in the world to play MAG when it comes out. I have been playing the Beta, and I love it. I have been testing the Bad Company 2 beta too, but somehow I got tired of that a lot sooner than I hoped...

Anyway; these are the games I have finished the last couple of weeks, so I can get the games listed above when they are released...

1.) Borderlands (including house of the Ned DLC) Platinum

2.) Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time (including MY BLASTER RUNS HOT! *sigh*) Platinum

3.) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. (Finished story mode and some spec ops. don't believe the hype.)

4.) Dragon Age: Origins. Including 2 DLC's. Not platinum YET. haha

So now I just need to finish two more games to be safe. I am almostdone withUncharted 2: Among Thieves. The second game would have to be Tomb Raider Underworld or Cross Edge. The latter has my preference, but that will definately kill my social life... (360 hours of Disgaeain three months nearly did. haha)

I'll keep you all posted!

Goodbye my friend...

When I got at work last week there was an e-mail from the manager explaining that one of my colleagues had suddenly passed away the thursday before. At first the medical service at the scene thought about suicide. There had been medications in her house.

I did not know her very well yet. We met early this year. She just got divorced and was starting her new life with surprising enthusiasm. We used to hang out in "the smoker's room" at work. She and I were among the few people there who smoke, so we got to know each other better in a short time. The news of her passing surprised many of my co-workers. Some of them have rearranged her office to make it some sort of "shrine" (Don't want to make it sound offensive, but I lack a better word.) where everyone can write down his or her condolences to the family. Of course I did so too.

Today I heard that her ex-husband, who happens to be a doctor.provided her with the medications that were found at her house on that fatal morning. It gets worse though. Apparently my friend (as I like to think of her) was the second wife of that doctor. His first wife had died six years ago, after taking (...) an overdose of medications. I was shocked. These are things you see in movies, not in real life. And specifically not close by. The police is investigating the case... Let's hope they find out all there is to know about her death.

My support goes out to all of her relatives, friends and everyone else who has known her.

Goodbye my friend. I'll miss you and think about you every time I light one up alone...

Love is... getting a new ps3 from my girlfriend after the Yellow Light of Death.

So yesterday my world seemed to collapse. My Ps3 showed this little yellow light that usually is green, then switched off, releasing it's last breath... I was in shock. Thousands of hours of gameplay flushed down the drain. All those hard-earned trophies... gone. Or so I Thought.

Sony informed me, that since it is no longer in it's first year after purchase I'd have to pay 200 euro's for repairs. I'd still lose my savegames and everything else stored on my hard drive and I would get someone else's revised 60GB console. This bugged me a lot. I was defiately not in a good mood.

I half expected my girlfriend to not understand what I was so mad and disappointed about, but I didn't do her right with that assumption... This morning when I was at work (yeah, sometimes I work too...) I received a text message saying that I had a present waiting for me on the dining table when I was coming home from work. Never in a million years would I have thought to receive a brand new ps3 including the game "Infamous". My girlfriend even went though the trouble of visiting store after store for a new copy of Fallout 3, the game I was playing when my system crashed. (Even though it isn't at all sure wether I can rescue the first copy I had from the deathly grasp of my old best friend...)

Tonight we had the best of fun starting a new game of Fallout. My girlfriend even stayed along for the ride when I started shooting peoples heads of just to get rid of that unresolved anger still burning inside me since the night before.

The indifference my girlfriend always showed concerning my hobby is slowly changing tp understanding and even adding to her fanaticism. I love my girlfriend a lot, and I mean A LOT. But, since today, I know that even that feeling still shows the flexibility to grow even more.

oh, and for those people wondering: I recovered all of my trophies, even though I don't have any of he saves left.

What to do when ill... play games left unplayed...

Last week the doctor told me that one of the muscles in my back had a slight rip in it. The best thing to do is to move that muscle a lot, take a lot of medicines and rest. I decided to make an effort to finish some games I had lying around that I never finished.

The first game on my list was Need for speed Undercover for my Playstation 3. This is the first game I have played on ANY console that made me want to throw something out the window. This game is actually a lot of fun, but the programming is SO bad, that even during races with slower cars, the road turns grey/black and the screen freezes for a random number of seconds to LOAD... Come on, that's just lazy programming! I got my platina trophy though.

The second game I started playing again last week is Fallout 3. I decided it was time to see how the story ends. The Playstation 3 version of the game was lying around in my house, but somehow I never got to playing it. (Just bought too many other games I guess.) I finished the game with a level 16 good character. Why good? Because I am going to have even more fun playing evil and I would be getting tired of NOT killing people. Anyways, the game gave me a good feeling. The story is really compelling and the loss of an NPC character (minor spoiler?) actually feels like a loss and makes me think about if, and how I could have prevented that dramatic event to occur.

For a minor break in my Fallout 3 platinum hunt I chose to play Bioshock, which really gives me the creeps. I hope it brings as much replay value as Fallout does, because I like spending time in Rapture.

Anyways, as long as I'm not back at work I'll keep posting about my quest for the fourth platinum. My current platinum trophies are: Uncharted, Burnout Paradise and Need for Speed Undercover. I am close to getting the platinum trophy for Battlefield: Bad Company, but the 7800 kills left for that one Bronze trophy kind of make me want to give up on that one since BF:BC 2 is due this november and then nobody will play the first part anymore. (Probably including me...)

Rapture is calling... I'll be back!

Games I finished this year and last year...

The year is coming to an end, and I thought it might be a good idea to sum up all the games I finished so far. Maybe to inspire other gamers to create a list like mine to compare them and to share experiences... Well, here goes.

  • Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance I and II (PS2)
  • Battlefield: Bad Company (PS3)
  • Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PS2)
  • Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (PSP)

  • Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice
  • Final Fantasy VII (PSone)
  • Final Fantasy IX (PSone)
  • Final Fantasy X
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions (PSP)
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA)
  • Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction (PS3)
  • Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty (PS3)
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)

Guess that prety much sums it up.. If I forgot any, I'll add them soon...

Curse you, dr. Layton

I just finished Professor Layton and the Curious Village on DS, I borrowed it from a friend. I found almost all of the puzzles. I need six more puzzles and I just can't seem to find them anymore. One of them, puzzle number eight should be accesed through clicking on the Layton mobile, waiting just outside of town, but I just can't seem to get it. The thing is, that according to gamefaqs I should do it in chapter number seven or eight, I can't exactly remember which one it was. I am using a save file just before the ending of the game, so the puzzle should be at the old lady's puzzle shack, but it's not!

Being a compulsive player (read previous posts if you need to know more) I just can't stand to miss any of the puzzles. So now I'm thinking about starting a new game, even though that would erase the last eleven hours of playing. With any other game I wouldn't mind doing so, but since I allready found 117 of the in game puzzles and every other bonus puzzle, except for the ones awarded when you find all 120 in game ones, I think I'll get bored really soon, because I know all the answers. I loved the game, but it's a shame that it has absolutely no replay value whatsoever.

Funny that I used to play games like Shadowgate on he NES for hours straight over and over again, with no extra things to unlock and no bonus features at all... What made me such a critic?

Anyways, I was thinking about writing my own faq, just to see if I have the dedication it takes to write one and for having something to do on my second playthrough. The thing is that there are allready a lot of decent faqs for that game. Maybe I'll just let my family and girlfriend try all the puzzles, so I can see how long it takes them to finish them.

Guess I just need to start looking for another handheld game to play. Disgaea DS is calling me, even though I finished Disgaea AoD on PSP just a little while back. I need those extra playable characters, haha.

Release date annoyances

Kingdom Hearts was one of my favourite games on PS2. Even my girlfriend, who has an abnormal aversion of anything involving console gaming, loved it. When I booted up the game to start my first run I was surprised to find my girlfriend almost as enthusiastic as I was. She was making notes on what Dalmatian puppies we found, planning course through the game, even inspiring me to just try to beat Sepiroth. (Anyone ever wonder why Lance Bass was casted as his voice actor? N-Sync and one of the best games ever made, Final Fantasy VII; is it me or is there really no connection at all there!)

Chain of Memories never quite caught me. I liked the general idea of Kingdom Hearts going portable, but didn't find the way the game was presented quite so exhilarating. So I just waited (and waited, and waited....) for the European release of Kingdom Hearts 2. When I heard that the Japanese version included a remake of the GBA game Chain of Memories I got very close to buying myself a Japanese Playstation 2 console. Now, the American people are treated on the reissue of that same game. Europe however, according to numeral rumours around the net, should be thankful if Kingdom Hearts 3 ever was going to see daylight here.

I wonder what still keeps companies thinking in those regions. Game-wise, all Playstation 3 are region free... So, when Disgaea 3 had it's US release last fall, I ordered it online. I mean, why wait another four months for the European release? For the translated manual? I don't think so. Why doesn't playstation try to release more games on a worldwide basis... I mean, with Playstation Home, wouldn't it be nice to be able to compare trophies and awards with gamers from all around the world without having to explain why you have all trophies on a game that hasn't even been released in Europe yet.

Another thing that bugs me is that I bought the PS3 in the early days, because I heard it was region free AND backwards compatible. Well, someone should have told me that those two things do not go together. When I inserted my imported Final Fantasy Tactics disc for PSone it just wouldn't work.

I'm really not all that angry because of the longer wait here in Europe when it comes to game releases. The European version of Level 5 game "Rogue Galaxy" for instance, was a huge improvement on the Japanese version. I just hope that Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of memories will be released here, and if so, let it be soon...

My name is Raymond and I am a compulsive collector...

The penalty for being a compulsive neurotic collector; so many games I haven't played that I want to finish, but at the same time feeling compelled to buy that new game 'cause all my friends have it and they say it's amazing.

It's always been that way though. Since I was 8 years old and saved enough money to buy myself a home computer (MSX, for people who actually give a damn.) I have been more of a game (and console) collector. Now, at age 31 I'm noticing that I'm changing. I own all Nintendo consoles (except Gamecube, but I can play those games on my Wii), a Nintendo DS, PSP, Playstation 1, 2 and 3 and a Sega Megadrive I just can't get rid of even though I have only one game for it... My favorite platform would be the Playstation 3 at the moment. I have about 30 games now and I finished almost half. For my Playstation 2 I own about 160 games (ALL original, no copies for me.), of which I have finished about 30 also. You can see my problem here? That's just two consoles...

The change for me is that now I agreed with myself to not just buy any game I want to anymore, but finish at least one game before buying another. The thing is, that when I finish one and I buy one because according to my "rule" I was allowed to, the stack of unfinished games will never get smaller.

Furthermore, I bought a lot of games that were the next big thing, BACK IN THE DAY... I really feel no need to play games like Green Beret (MSX) or Lands of Lore 1(PC) anymore. They were great for that time, but now, they just aren't worth the trouble, because there are many other and better games. Possibly even in my collection. So, I was thinking that maybe I should finish one game on an older console before buying a new one. I probably should create a list of games that I still intend to finish. be continued...
