I had always assumed they had been wiped out or enslaved considering how 'low tech' theyd have been,, cant imagine a few sporadic tribes wielding wooden spears would of been a threat to anyone.
Generally women, they are more taken care of, favored, and were even raised to not lay a hand on them and always agree etc.
