Frankly, I think they just wish to make their retailers happy by clearing out the current stock levels before they lower the price of the 80GB, otherwise they'd be stuck with a ton of 60GB models. Seriously, would you pay for the original verison of a game or the Gold/Platinum pack if they were the same price? No, you'd buy the Gold/Platinum pack as that would be better money spent. Plus, the 80GB should be cheaper for them to produce as it's missing the Emotion chip and I'm sure those blue diode lasers have come down since I've seen a drop in the Blu-Ray players as well (note: speculation on my part).
However, I believe that everyone has a hard-on now for Sony that almost rivals the level of animosity of Microsoft in the PC community. What the masses need to see is a game that is just so much better graphically and in terms of gameplay that "moves" you to buy it. With so many games on both the 360 and PS3, it's not really clear about why you should buy the PS3. I'm probably going to have to buy a 360 to play with my best friend, even though I like the PS3 (which I own). So, should I buy the PS3 version of Rainbow Six when I also would need to buy a 360 version to play with my best friend? They don't really look or play any different.
And, it's not helping that the RPGs (no where to be seen on the old xbox) are showing up as exclusives on the 360! That genre has always belonged to Sony. I consider this a serious indicator of the changes in the public's perception.
