Metroid and $5?

by on

Ok here's the deal: I hate the Metroid Prime games. Really hate. Loathe. Literally every time I see them on the shelf I get pissed off for having wasted the money on buying them in the first place. So, this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to pay for YOU to take my game. That's right. If you ever wanted to own either Metroid Prime or Metroid Prime: Echoes, now's your chance, because you're not just getting a game, you're getting a game and $5. What you're essentially doing is paying -$5 for each game. Either someone rescues these games soon, or they get thrown out of a moving car window, to be backed up upon. The artwork and manual will be burned. As you can tell, I hate these games.

How it works: people interested should PM me. I will choose whoever gets the game(s) based on size of collection and whether or not they actually own the game(s). In a few weeks, I'll PM the person, and that person will send me their mailing address. Do whatever you want to in case you think this is a scam, because I assure you it's not. Once I receive the address, I will place the game or games in question in a parcel. Inside of the game case, I will put $5. Then all you have to do is receive your money and game. Simple as that.

The games come with all their original labelling, and the case, manual, and artwork are in really good shape. The games are basically unplayed since I hated them so much. Wait too long, however, and their condition might worsen.

A pretty decent number of new games added to the list this year, most of which have a length well into the double-digits and even into the triple in some instances. Probably the most major additions to the list are the Lunar games, Digital Devil Saga, Bully, Earthbound, and Xenogears, all of which lasted 25+ hours. Unfortunately, looking at this list makes me realize how lopsided my buying versus completing ratio is: I completed about 25 games in the past year, but I've probably bought around 150, most of those being RPGs and extremely long adventures. But, that's still better than it was last year, which saw me beat only around 1/10th of the games I had purchased/received in that six month period, versus this being 1/5th. Continuing at this rate, my completion-to-retreival ratio should be even in around 2014. Joy.

My 2008 game of the year

by on

So, contrary to what you might expect, I am not going to judge the best game released in 2008. Why? For the very simple reason that I only played a single game released this year, meaning I am unfairly biased in that department. Unlike some journalists, I try not to let personal biases affect my judgement, so I've decided to throw all of the games I played for the first time this year into the ring and see which comes out on top.

Without further ado, the contenders are:

Suikoden
SUIKODEN

HALF-LIFE

SKIES OF ARCADIA LEGENDS

MOTHER

APOLLO JUSTICE: ACE ATTORNEY

PORTAL

SLY COOPER AND THE THIEVIUS RACOONUS

SLY 2: BAND OF THIEVES

SLY 3: HONOR AMONG THIEVES

LUNAR: SILVER STAR STORY COMPLETE

LUNAR 2: ETERNAL BLUE COMPLETE

HITMAN: CONTRACTS

MOTHER 2 (EARTHBOUND)

PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME

MOTHER 3

XENOGEARS

Those are the contestants. Now, lets have our game of the year! Drumroll, please...

THE WINNER IS:

XENOGEARS!!!!

That's right. The Playstation great Xenogears won my heart in 2008. Despite stiff competition from games such as Sly 2, Skies of Arcadia, Apollo Justice, and Mother 3 (all of which I'd probably rank in my top 15 games of all time), Xenogears managed to beat them all. Not only does Xenogears take my 2008 game of the year, but it also somehow managed to take my ALL-TIME game slot, too. Best game I've ever played, hands down, even over the venerable Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

There's more to the story. Truth be told, around August/September I was toying with the idea of giving up gaming as a hobby altogether. It had practically lost its luster for me, with what I then viewed as slipshod games being released on new platforms, as well as my marriage. I didn't see how gaming could fit into my busy schedule and was inclined to just drop it altogether, let the games I own sit for awhile, and eventually sell them. That all changed with the experience that was Xenogears. Let me just say to all of you who haven't played it: if you like high art, it's the game for you. Period. In my view it trumps the greatest Renaissance art as an expression of human spirit, it's that good.

STINKER OF THE YEAR:

HALF-LIFE

What can be said. I didn't like it. There were parts of it that were good but those were almost totally overshadowed by drudgery. I'll never understand why it was considered a great and why it continues to be viewed so highly by so many. To me, it's woefully average at best, and downright revolting at worst.

I will say, however, that during my very brief affair with World of Warcraft (not included on this list because I only played it for a few days), that WoW was much worse than Half-Life.

New Things. Some Good, Some Bad.

by on

Man it's been awhile since I've blogged or posted here. Real life has been taking its toll recently, and what little free time I have had has been squarely devoted to attempting to progress in my video games.

I've been shirking on my goals here, such as reviewing each game I beat/play exhaustively, keeping up a monthly blog, and staying active in the two Unions I really care about (CCU and Ace Attorney). I'd just like to apologize to those who read my reviews or blogs and who appreciate my comments in the union forums as to my inactivity, but I've been working like a dog for the past month and school, friends, and real life events have been taking their toll on me.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the gaming front...

My wallet was stolen recently, and as such this has curbed my ability to purchase new games for myself. However, prior to having my wallet stolen, I managed to buy a few games that I had wanted for awhile, such as Front Mission 4, Tales of the Abyss, Disgaea 2, X-Men Legends II, and the Devil May Cry trilogy. I had originally also planned to purchase Star Fox Assault, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Yakuza, but for some reason I didn't. My roommate also bought Call of Duty 4 for me, and I expect a great deal of old Playstation games as late birthday presents.

My DS was left in an airport, so that's gone, as are the two games that were in it (Advance Wars 2 and Advance Wars: Dual Strike). As such I'm going to need to buy a replacement DS at some point, probably in a month or two. Fortunately I wasn't playing any handheld games at the time and didn't even have any plans to, so it really doesn't bother me all that much except for the minor inconvenience of shelling out another $150 dollars for another DS and trying to replace those two games, which were two of my personal favorites.

I've beaten/played a lot of games that I haven't reviewed...Mother, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney and probably some others. I've played a bunch of games since Suikoden that I didn't review because I hadn't beaten them, like Xenogears, Suikoden II, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Grandia, Disgaea, and possibly others.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway I'm going to try and reclaim my activeness, and restart the posting of reviews with my current project, Skies of Arcadia: Legends. I may start writing back reviews for games like Mother, as well.

Hyped Games and Why I Didn't Avoid the Latest

by on

I generally avoid hyped games like the plague, but I've made an exception this time for Smash Bros. Brawl. Despite loathing its predecessor (which I lovingly call Super **** Bros. Crapfest), I decided to give this game a shot for one simple reason: I like the music.

Really. I'm viewing this game basically as a CD. I don't care about the battles, which if they're anything like Melee's I will hate. The sole reason I bought it is because I thought, hey, people who like the game deserve an actual good battle stage. So, I've decided to build a battle stage based on King Dedede's boxing ring, throw in Dedede's music, and watch the good times roll.

I'm unable to play the game this week and the map itself will probably take some time to create. Add into the fact that I won't have internet for my Wii until early May, and Dedede's Ring won't see online circulation for a little while.

The plan is for it to play somewhat like Final Destination did in Melee except with some special tricks. I'll be giving it away online when I finish making it and have Wii internet access, so if you're interested look for another blog post.

Despite disliking the Smash Brothers series, rest assured that I am a big fan of King Dedede's and will do my best to make a faithful recreation of his humble boxing arena.

Class Depravation

by on
With the release of Apollo Justice moved back until February 19th, it looks like my classes Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22nd will be the victims.

Hope I don't have tests or quizzes those days, as, quite simply, even if I were to go, I wouldn't be focused. At all.

Year-End Retrospective

by on
Well, 2007 is at its end, and what a year. Unfortunately, I can't really remember all that I've done this year, so instead of a great big year end retrospective, this will pretty much just be a "December 2007" retrospective. Hopefully next year, as I continue to diligently post monthly retrospectives, I will be able to synthesize such a great thing for you all, but for now...

December turned out pretty well for me. It opened to a great deal of stress as anticipated, but that was offset by the sheer enjoyment Radiata Stories brought me. I was as good as my word, and finished the game not once, but twice in order to experience the entire storyline. I also did every last sidequest and minigame available, and overall just milked that game for all its worth.

After completing Radiata I enjoyed another drifting phase, once again trying and failing to get into Final Fantasy VII as well as a few other games. Effort was minimal on my part to really deal with my gaming hobby, however, as real life exacted a heavy toll on my time during the middle of the month. Exams and research papers swallowed up my time with ease and before I knew it I was solely concentrating on these. They were over December 17th, and for two days, I slept. I was exhausted.

December 19th I returned to my parent's house for Christmas break and immediately set into The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, my favorite game. Unfortunately, my parents and a few friends were Mamba-starved and as such I didn't have enough time to beat Zelda (or even really play it very much) before Christmas rolled around. This was compounded by the fact that I've started watching 24, which is an incredibly addictive piece of television that sucks up my time seemingly without effort.

Christmas was great, and I obtained an obscene number of games, far more than I had anticipated. As I'd promised myself months earlier, I immediately set into Suikoden, and have been playing it a great deal since. It is every bit as amazing as I remembered.

As mentioned, an absurd number of games were obtained this month. Suikoden, Suikoden II, Valkyrie Profile, Tales of Destiny, Tales of Destiny II, Xenogears, Grandia, Vagrant Story, Super Mario Galaxy, and the Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass were all obtained as Christmas presents, and I myself bought Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonius, Sly 2: Band of Thieves, Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, Legaia 2: Duel Saga, Burnout 3: Takedown, Twisted Metal: Black, Mega Man X: Command Mission, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, and traded in my Wii version of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the far superior Gamecube iteration. This is by far the largest number of games I've ever obtained in a single month.

Plans for next month? Well, I definetely plan to finish Suikoden, and may try to play Suikoden II after that. However, I feel like I've been playing way too many RPGs for far too long and may take a platformer break. As I own every single major platformer for the Playstation 2, as well as some great platformers for systems such as the Gamecube, Wii, Nintendo 64, and Playstation, I have a lot of options. I think for awhile I may play some solid platformers.

Games I'm really looking forward to playing this month:

...and some sort of platformer game.

Christmas!

by on
Fun time, this. This has been the first day of my eight day dead period after final but before Christmas, and I've been loving every minute. Aside from being able to sleep for 15 hours a day (which I happily did today) and being able to rub the fact that I'm done with exams in my friends' faces, I now have some time to game. It feels like forever since I was happily free of obligation, or at least pretending to be, and blissfully spending time just playing a game.

For the next few days, I will be busy. Tomorrow I have to fly to my parent's house, and will unfortunately be leaving a good percentage of the games that I have with me here. I've decided that I'm going to bring the majority of my PS1 games as well as what games I have beaten since I've been here, such as Radiata Stories, with me. After that the next few days will probably be spent with my gf, Christmas shopping, or with the Family.

It occurs to me that I have yet to play my traditional once-a-year game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That will be rectified starting possibly tomorrow but most definetely over the following six days. I hope to finish off Ocarina for the seventh time before Christmas, as once Christmas rolls around I will be eager to sink my teeth into what games I've been promised. I even learned recently that I have at least two more games to look forward to for Christmas, and what they are I'm not sure, but I have hopes.

Merry Christmas everybody, and I hope you all take some time off of both your work and your games, sit back with some loved ones, and watch a Charlie Brown Christmas. Peace.
