Anyone know how to get rid of the little gray box in the middle of the desktop? It goes away if you click show desktop, but I can't get it to go away otherwise.

Student discount has to be one of the greatest things ever coming from Microsoft. k0r3aN_pR1d3
What else do they have? Do they have a whole student discount page?? I wouldn't mind a few more deals like this!

Oh and looking at this closer, I can get it on a disk for $13 more dollars. Is that worth it? Or could I just save the downloaded files to my external hard drive for later?

Ok, so I have my ASUS G50VT-X5 that I've had for less than a year and its running on Vista Home Premium right now. I've personally had zero problems with Vista and like it a lot!

But here's the deal.......

I was browsing bargainjack.com and found a deal from M$ that if you have a .edu email from your school, you can get an Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade for $30!! I entered my school email and got an email saying I do in fact qualify for the upgrade.

So what should I do? Will I lose anything by updating to Windows 7, or will it be just like a Windows update more or less? I just don't want to have to wipe my computer and start over again.

Right now I'm leaning towards yes because of all the great things I've been hearing about Windows 7, but I want to be sure.

Thanks everyone. Oh and here's the link if anyone else is interested:

Well guys, I went with the ASUS and I love it. The Gateway was overwhelmingly huge, and the screen didn't look nearly as good IMO. I figured for kicks I would download the demo of Crysis, even thought the guy at BB said the computer would struggle w/ it, and I can run it perfect with all the settings on high! I absolutely love the auxiallary screen above the keyboard as well. It gives me some info on the computer's CPU, battery, and memory, and also alerts me to emails, who they're from, and the subject. Just doing normal stuff, the battery life is a bit under three hours I believe. And whoever it was saying that the power bricks are huge, you're wrong. Its the same size as any other laptop power brick. The quickboot is a nice feature as well for just checking something on the web quick. The texture where your palms rest is amazing. It feels much better than a normal, smooth surface. The touch pad is nice and works great, but the buttons are a little hard to push for my liking, but I tap 99% of the time anyways. Also, the ASUS Smart Logon is great! I thought it was going to be just a little gimicky deal, but its extremely nice! As I'm getting ready for class, I can turn on the computer, then when the login screen comes up, I just look at the camera once and I'm logged in. One small complaint I have though is the power cord is extremely short! I haven't actually measured it, but I would say its less than 7 feet. Its about 3 feet shorter than my Toshiba laptop's from school. Other than that I love this thing. Real solid feeling, GREAT screen, excellent performance. I'm hooked on Company of Heroes right now and this computer absolutely manhandles that game! I love it! Anyone on the fence between this one or the Gateway, should definitely think about the other cool things you could get with the extra $300!

I have an Asus laptop, and works great.Mastergamer27

Can you play most RTS and strategy games on a decent graphics performance setting and still have a smooth frame rate?

Does anyone know where to find these computers for a better price than BB? Will there be a huge difference w/ the 512 graphics vs the 1gb? Neither have a backlit keyboard. Is that something you could put in after the warranty expired? I'm just so stumped on this. I wish I knew more of what to look for. So most people seem to think the Gateway is worth the extra $250, right?

Will the ASUS be able to run games like Empire Total War or the new Company of Heroes? How well will it run?
