Sat Mar 17, 3:44 PM ET MILWAUKEE - A 28-year-old mother was arrested after her 6-year-old daughter tipped police off to her drug dealing ways. The girl was interviewed by police Friday after her father reported she had been hit in the face with a curling iron while visiting her mother earlier in the week, Milwaukee Police Capt. Darlene Jenkins said. Jenkins said the girl was wise to her mother's cocaine dealing, telling them she chops up a white substance, puts it in bags and takes them — and the girl — to alleys. There, people gave the mother money for the bags, police said the girl recounted. The mother of four was arrested after police found 55 bags of cocaine worth about $20 each at the woman's home. She was being held Saturday pending charges of child abuse and possession with intent to sell, Jenkins said. ___ Information from: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, http://www.jsonline.com Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070317/ap_on_fe_st/odd_mother_dealer;_ylt=AlVyB4RUwvlTbEHd5JvWVFLtiBIF

Sun Mar 18, 12:52 AM ET SUPERIOR, Wis. - Jeff Rolson is just relieved he didn't get sent to the principal's office. The 40-something Rolson last week dropped by Superior Senior High School, where he graduated in 1977, to get a copy of his transcript for a plumbing apprenticeship. That's when he found out he had two outstanding debts — $7.95 for a missing algebra book and $5 for an unpaid physical-education fee. A secretary told him he had to pay up before he could get his transcript. "I told her, 'Do you realize this was 30 years ago?'" he said. Rolson says he doesn't understand why the school didn't contact him earlier. After all, he still lives in Superior — and his daughter attends the school. "Nobody contacted me, so I ended up paying the $13 to get my transcript," he said. State law prevents a school district from withholding documents such as transcripts and diplomas, said district superintendent Jay Mitchell. But it's not uncommon for districts to try to collect unpaid fees and fines before providing documents, he said. Rolson caught one break, though. "She did forget the $2 fee for the transcript," he said. He's also grateful the school didn't charge him interest. "It was 13 bucks. If they had charged me interest all these years — compounded for 30 years — I don't know what the bill might have been," he said. Maybe he didn't have the algebra book after all. Wed Mar 14, 8:32 PM ET CONCORD, N.H. - A former court security officer has been convicted of offering to pay a couple behind on a fine $20 an hour to have sex while he watched. The couple testified that they were skeptical when Robert Theriault told them they would be testing sheets and condoms as part of an insurance company survey to see if they increased sperm count. But they said they ultimately trusted Theriault, who resigned as a Franklin District Court security officer in December 2005 after being accused of the crime, because he worked for the court. The couple said they agreed to Theriault's offer because they needed money to pay a $500 speeding fine. "At first I thought it was a joke," the man testified. "But every time I asked a question about it, he was right there with a response. So I began to think he was telling the truth." The couple reported Theriault in 2006 after they read news accounts about another man who had accused the former court officer of a similar offer. Theriault, 49, who was convicted Tuesday, took the stand in his own defense and said he only offered the couple, whom he met in court, jobs in a restaurant. Theriault faces a maximum of two years in jail and a $4,000 fine when he is sentenced. New Hampshire's prostitution laws prohibit people from offering to pay for sex whether it involves themselves or other people. ___ Information from: Concord Monitor, http://www.cmonitor.com Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070315/ap_on_fe_st/security_officer_prostitution;_ylt=A9G_Rx0PtvlF768AvC7tiBIF

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. - Two stray cats attacked three people after they got into a house in North Platte. "I thought I had seen it all, but I have never seen anything like this," Chief of Police Martin Gutschenritter said Tuesday. A call for help Monday took animal control officer John Pettit to the home of Melissa Breva, Gutschenritter said. Breva told Pettit she had captured two cats in a bedroom. "She said the cats had gotten into the house when the front door was open," Gutschenritter said, then attacked two women who were visiting Breva. One, Wendy Holliday, suffered scratches, the chief said, and she was bitten on both ankles, both knees and on her left calf. "She told the officer it happened when the two cats entered the residence and attacked her for no reason," Gutschenritter said. The other woman, Rebecca Cheever, was bitten on the right calf. After talking to the women, Pettit went to his truck for snares — his "cat catchers." Then he heard screaming from inside the house. "When he ran back, he saw a young male with blood over his face," Gutschenritter said. The cats had attacked a boy who had opened the bedroom door. "He was bitten on his forehead, nose, left ear and right cheek," the chief said. After some first aid from Pettit, the three were taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center for more treatment. When investigator John Stadler arrived and opened the bedroom door, "he saw a gray and white cat baring its teeth in attack mode," Gutschenritter said. "He shut the bedroom door and returned to his car for a dart gun." Both cats were shot, tranquilized and taken to the animal shelter, where they were euthanized. The bodies were sent to Lincoln for rabies checks, Gutschenritter said. Authorities want to find out who owned the cats. Under city ordinance, cats may run free if they don't become nuisances. "I'm on the animal commission, and we've never seen anything like this," Gutschenritter said. "We have dealt with dog bites, but we've never had one with a cat." ___ Information from: The North Platte Telegraph, http://www.nptelegraph.com Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070314/ap_on_fe_st/when_cats_attack;_ylt=Age4SonbnP2Rp3o2sCGIhzvtiBIF

43 minutes ago MESA, Ariz. - Viewers of a news show broadcast on a Phoenix-area cable television station received a lot more than news — hard-core pornography started streaming into their living rooms, replacing a health show featuring former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw. The incident on KPPX-TV Monday night prompted a flood of calls to local news media outlets and cable provider Cox Communications, including one from Chandler resident Brenda Schodt, who said she was shocked to look up and see graphic sex acts on her television screen. "Maybe five or 10 minutes into the show there was no volume," Schodt said. "I thought it was the TV, but when I looked up, there were these images." Cox spokeswoman Andrea Katsenes said that the unexpected clips were a "source issue" with the broadcaster. ION Television, which operates KPPX, called the problem "an act of human sabotage" at its station. The company, based in West Palm Beach, Fla., declined to say if the pornography aired nationwide or only in the Phoenix market. "We have launched a rigorous investigation, and any implicated employees will face strict disciplinary action and termination," ION Media Networks spokeswoman Leslie Monreal said in a prepared statement. ___ Information from: East Valley Tribune/Scottsdale Tribune, http://www.eastvalleytribune.com Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070314/ap_on_fe_st/news_porn;_ylt=A9G_RyepYPhFGqUAuAvtiBIF

Egg-laying cows? One in 10 eight-year-olds do not realise pork chops come from pigs - and some even believe cows lay eggs. A new survey also reveals nearly two out of 10 children had no idea where yoghurt came from. And eight per cent of city youngsters did not realise beefburgers came from cows - compared to 3% who live in the country. Two per cent of urban kids thought cows produced eggs. But all children knew milk came from cows. The Dairy Farmers of Britain asked more than 1,000 children aged eight to 15 where they thought eggs, cheese, yoghurt, bacon, pork chops and beefburgers came from. A spokesman said: "A significant proportion, particularly those living in the city, are unaware of the process involved in making their food."
