I've had my own reservations about the combat as well. Something has been whispering to my guts that there would be fragments within The Last of Us I won't take a liking to. Maybe McShea's opinion isn't too far off? He's played it and we haven't. So who knows for now.
On the character side of the spectrum Ellie always seemed to me as the glue that will bind the rage filled, violence first world together. Maybe her 'human after all' disposition as an individual makes her too complex or emotionally charged, rendering the supporting cast dull? I'm sure this was a design decision by ND. Perhaps it works in the grand scheme of the type of story they want to tell, and McShea's too picky? Or maybe the game's issues are just too darn distracting?
Lately, for me at least, gaming's negative aspects somewhat supersede the positive ones. Am I jaded, becoming increasingly picky, or just see the through the illusion? I don't know. I just know that I haven't been undividedly satisfied with a video game in a quite a while *sad expression*.
On a brighter tip, the rest of the net appears to be enamored by it which is a good ass sign. 95 (likely to be 94 in the end) is impressive. If reviews are ever an indicator of a products worth, then this is a positive thing. For them, the overall experience is so well executed it quells whatever immersion breaking combat moments or limp supporting cast that may or may not exist. Well... I can't wait to play it!
