So I just downloaded Dust 514 to check it out. I've literally played about 6 of the basic matches so far (and haven't done to shabby). I haven't spent a single skill point or any currency as of yet, and I don't plan to right off the bat. I figured i'd reach out to *Your name here* and see what the smartest use of my resources is. I usually prefer sniping, but with all the Halo-esque jumping around going on, i'm probably gonna stick with the fast assault/assault rifle type. That being said, what do I wanna focus on upgrading/buying or whatever. Is there equipment that looks good to me, a newbie, that I should avoid buying? Is there a certain skill I absolutely have to get? Any general knowledge I should keep in mind when i'm heading into a fight? I should also mention that, for the time being, i'm not gonna put any actual money into the game. Is that a recipe for disaster? Should I just quit now if i'm not gonna pay? Anyway, I've had fun so far. I was surprised at how crisp the gunplay feels. Would like to get into that Corporate Battle stuff someday, but for now i'll keep my balls on the prize. Help me Gamespot forum members. You're my only hope.

I personally never play a game for the story alone. If a game has a good story/plot ALONG with great gameplay mechanics and decent graphics and all that, it's a definite plus, but I would have no problem playing a game with literally no story and great mechanics/graphics. If you want a good story go read a book. That being said the main story isn't exactly "edge of your seat what happens next" exciting, and its nothing that's gonna make you ponder the meaning of life or anything deep like that. Like the one dude said, its basically an excuse to throw in some dragons and give you super powers. I did enjoy a ton of the semi main quests and side quests though. They're usually short, sweet, and a lot of them were pretty interesting. All in all, people who don't play Skyrim because of the story probably didn't enjoy the mechanics of the game very much either. I personally love Skyrim, but 2 of my favorite things in video games are open world exploration and character leveling, so yea, to me Skyrim rocks. I will say Skyrims combat was a bit bland, but I guess I shouldn't really be concerned about finesse in combat when i'm carrying a fully improved and enchanted daedric mace and my one arm skill is 100 with mace relevant skills maxed. Never read a book that lets me do that before.

I'm almost positive it wasn't Stronghold. The scale of building construction I saw in the screenshots goes way beyond what I remember. I couldn't get Settlers 1 to run on my computer, so i'm gonna see if Settlers 2 works. My only question is; in Settlers, do you have to build a units weapon separately before you are able to build that unit? Other than the pig farm nonsense, that's the only detail I actually fully remember (even though I don't remember the actual units lol). Anyways, Settlers seems like a neat game regardless, hopefully I can get the second one running. Thanks for the help everyone.

Wasn't Lords of the Realm 2, but looking at the Settlers 1 stuff, it might be Settlers. I don't remember it having boats or an economic system as complex what it seems Settlers has, but i'm downloading it to check it out.

It's not any of those games. It wasn't a city builder in the sense of what I saw from the screenshots of Stronghold and Settlers. I'm pretty sure it stuck to the general RTS recipe of spend some time to build all available structures, save up resources as you do, pump out an army, kill the computer, a la StarCraft or WarCraft, just with a deeper economy. I don't remember any kind of campaign or persistence with anything either, pretty much just a skirmish mode versus the computer. And it was I guess fantasy, but not with monsters or things like that, just regular medieval units. Definitely not modern.

I've done a decent bit of looking around the internet and haven't found anything yet. I've pulled up a couple RTS lists and timelines on google to no avail. There is the possibility the game was made and or published outside the United States, and I almost wanna say maybe like Sweden or Norway or something. Game was definitely sold state side though, and it was in English and all. I doubt there was a sequel ever released, me and my buddy were pretty into the game and we would have picked any sequel up. I'm 99.99% sure it was single player only. That's how we always played at least, and my friend had like 5 computers at his house all on a LAN (which was friggin the most amazing thing ever back then), so if it had a multiplayer option, i'm sure we would have played that. But, all that said, we're talking around 14-16 or so years ago, and I was still in middle school, so my accounts could be well off. The pig farm and weapon making stuff is the only concrete stuff I remember.

It was definitely heavy on city building and economy management, for the time at least. There was definitely combat, I just don't remember any of it lol. I remember it was a pain in the butt to get your city up and running and get a decent force built up. I may just be making this up, but I wanna say the units would automatically enter formation when you went to move a bunch of them, god only knows. The pig farm is the only bit I remember clearly, along with having to build a weapon for every unit. You would click on (what I assume was) the Blacksmith building and there would be little sliders on the interface for each weapon, I remember swords and pikes, but there was more, I'm sure a bow was in there. Also, I don't know if it was my age/lack of knowledge of the game, or if the game mechanics were wacky, but I remember that you would build your pig farm, and it would take disproportionate amount of time to actually produce pigs. I wanna say pig production depended upon other variables that you could mess with, but once again, I don't know.

Ok, so I don't remember much, but the main thing I remember is you had to build all your weapons before you could build any units. For example, to build pike men you first had to build pikes at the blacksmith, before you built swordsmen you had to build swords. I remember there being some sort of pig farm, and you harvested the pigs for their leather (for armor I would imagine), and I wanna say you also harvested pigs for sausage, but i'm not sure about that. The pig farm would also show pigs running around the pen in the building animation, and the amount of pigs shown corresponded to the number of pigs you had produced and not used, so if the farm had produced 3 pigs, there would be 3 pigs running around the pen until you used some. It was a lot of animation for a building back then, and I thought it was pretty cool. I know building mines was involved also, and think you could build roads, but I don't think the roads made any real difference, but again i'm not sure. I remember nothing about combat unfortunately, can't even picture a combat unit in my head. It was an older game, 1999 at the oldest. I'm about 90% sure it was out before StarCraft 1, Homeworld 1, and Age of Empires 1, i'd say roughly somewhere between 1995 and 1999. Also it had a real color heavy palette, something like Warcraft 2. I'm 99.9% sure it was all real units (no monsters or mages or any wacky stuff like that). Thought it might be Majesty but after looking online I could find no Pig Farm type building in Majesty, but I could be wrong. Sorry I don't have more info, Thanks for any help.
