To me, a world's appearance matters a lot. Even if the world was empty and didn't have anything useful, as long as it looks exotic or new, I'll explore every nook and cranny. However, this can work against me because if a world feels flat or boring, but is loaded with secrets, lore, and items, I'm not as inclined to explore it. I take the world searching in short bursts, not in long marathons but I do intend to see what the entire game world has to offer.
Traveling in a mythical land feels exciting. I simply like being able to go to places because I can. I don't need to worry about food and water, or the travel time because it's a lot easier to get there on-foot than go to a major city IRL. It's simply exploring for the sake of exploring. Ironically, I don't like traveling IR very muchL. I've had a few incidences where I got lost and got into some trouble in real life, and it feels very different because there's real consequences IRL, and there's no overly-friendly NPC to help guide you along most of the time lol I was in France a couple of years ago and I wanted to try something fun before I go back to the hotel. I asked a restaurant manager who was helping serve out dinner. He gave me directions to a red light district. I was approached by this girl, we talked, she didn't like what I said (I simply wasn't interested) then some guys started hassling me. Nothing physical but being surrounded by five swarthy, angry men wasn't fun.
However, I do like to explore small cities and abandoned buildings, especially the latter. It's scary at first but the thrill of being alone in the dark with nothing but two flashlights is too exhilarating. I get a major high out of it. Too bad most of them are cordoned off or enforced. I guess it's also because of nostalgia. Growing up in the Philippines, I attended this "supposed" haunted school. Rumor has it the facility used to be a grave site, then a hospital was build on top of it then was later converted to a school. My friend and I snuck in at night and man it was the most frightening and exciting feeling as a kid! Didn't see any ghosts are apparitons but I could have sworn I'd see faces of a girl on the wall from time to time and we heard this really terrible moan that scared the daylight out of us. It was actually a guard having stomach problems lmao We didn't know one of the storage rooms was actually a small guard station at night. After playing Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, I really want to explore a huge haunted building and a swamp. Forrest of Doom and Dark Academy were amazing levels. Aside from that, no game has made me want to go out and explore.
