I was pottering around the house on the weekend and decided to put some music on and fire up my arcade machine, which my sister-in-laws brother was generous to "lend" me, I have over 3,700 classic games to choose from. As I was playing Double Dragon, Track and Field and 1942 it got me thinking of my favourite memories of when I was in the UK, I used to go to college in southend-on-sea, which has a massive seafront of games arcades that I used to spend my money on during lunch breaks and free periods iin the 90's

So, what are your favourite memories of going to the arcades when you were young and do you still visit arcades near you?

The one that springs to mind for me, is Modern warfare 2 feat. Eminem, I thought that was pretty good.

Them being fun is a matter of opinion.I like some I guess but saying they are just as fun as the older games is just an opinion.I like the older games being hard because if they were not then you would beat them in like 10 to 30 min. What I don't like is the ton of like and rip off titles. There has always ben that in the gaming industry but its gotten pretty bad this gen. Most companies don't want to try anything new and wait for some else to do it and then try and rip it off and make money off of it........motion controls anyone!

I agree, it is a matter of opinion. But if a game came out now with a 1-3 hour gameplay time and the only reason that it went longer was due to how hard it was, no-one would buy that either, it would be classed as cheap.

I'm not saying that I never enjoyed playing the old games, I have alot of fond memories of having a marathon 5 setter against my mate in Super Tennis, comparing lap times in Rainbow Road on Mario Kart with my mates, staying up til the early hours playing Tekken comps, but thats what they are, memories. I honestly feel that the games of this generation will go down as some of the best, games like Uncharted 1 & 2, AC2, Arkham, GoW3, SFIV etc. For the people stuck in yesteryear, I think they will look back and kick themselves for not enjoyng them.

Classified as cheap and wouldn't make any money?Well how long have you ben gaming?Have you ever played any of the older titles from the 8 and 16 bit era. Many of them were very hard but they sold really well. The only reason why games as not as hard now is because they are much longer. It depends on how long the game is as to how hard it is.A good example of this is mega man 9 and 10.

I do enjoy titles from this gen all I am saying that it is by far the weakest one so far.All those games that you just named took all of their ideas from older games. All I am saying is were are the original titles at?

I've been gaming for over 28 years, so yes I do remember games from the 8-bit era. And naturally they made money, they could only compare it to the games of that generation, if they were to come out today, they would be slammed as merely trying to pad the game out.

And everyone can say that games of this gen (or any gen for that matter) came from the ideas of the 80's or 90's, its easy to come up with a more original idea when gaming is in its infancy. If people have that attitude then you would turn your nose up at alot of titles.

I'm not hard to please and have enjoyed titles from this gen.I am sure though that I had more fun with every gen since this one though.I remember always having something to do with those older consoles and its not just nostalgia. It also might be that you could rent games back then much cheaper. You could rent 5 for 5$ for a week.I also remember 49 cent and 99 cent game rentals.I still rent sometimes but I just find it hard to throw down my hard earned money on another rip off title. Now to rent games at my blockbuster anyways you gotta give them a credit card number and plus it cost like 9$ to rent one game for like five days.

This has little to do with the current gen of consoles and the developers, its called inflation. I remember when I was a kid in the UK and I used to get 1/2 penny sweets and for 30p, I used to get a massive bag of sour cola bottles. Times change my friend.

I'm sure if games of today came out with the capacity of games of yesteryear, i.e. no online functionality, people would be annoyed or wouldn't buy it. Online functionality is the biggest thing of this generation, and now all games that come out have to have online multiplayer (games like AC2 and GoW3 are the exceptions). Its easy to say "I remember when consoles first came out..." but back then there was no online, the graphics were pixelated, the music was terrible (see Wonderboy) and people hardly ever completed the games because they were set so hard. If you wanted to play against a friend, you had to be in the same room, you had to save up the cost of a full game to buy one, whereas now you can get a small indie title, that is just as much fun, for $12.

Whats not to like?

This is the perfect chance for some company to make a console and focus it more on the hardcore crowd. With more fresh and original ideas and make it easy and cheap for the developers too make titles.

Not sure what games you would classify as "hardcore", it would appear that there are plenty. And its a catch 22, developers can't make cheaper games unless there is the consumer at the other end.

I do agree with you that originality is something that should be at the forefront a little, but thats not to say that the games of this gen are bad either.

I honestly can't understand it when people say this is the worst gen, either they have extremely powerful nostalia memories or they're very hard to please.

I have no rose colored view of the "old days", I lived them. This, this right here, is the golden age of gaming. That was the stone age. Good for a nostalgic smile and a quick play every so often, (bless the Virtual Console) but I would never want gaming to go back to that fully again.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I think the nastalgia feeling clouds peoples memories a tad. Naturally if you played a game when you were in your teens, you'd have fond memories of it, but if that game came out today, no-one would touch it.

My personal feel is that this is the best generation of machines. For a start, never in the history of consoles has there been 3 competitive machines, all with their own merit. Secondly, the games are the best I've ever played, if games like Assassins Creed 2, Uncharted 2, Arkham Asylum, COD4, FIFA10, God of War 3 don't make you slightly excited, then I'm afraid that is your issue.

The games have been beyond what I thought this generation would be able to produce, games that have the graphical power that can explore new avenues like Heavy Rain.

Not only is there 3 consoles, but 2 hand-helds that both offer their own pros and cons. Great times!

I have about 30 games and, even though I may not play some of them again, I like to build up a good collection.
