AKG K240(especially these inexpensive gems), Shure 840s, Audio Technica M50, and Senn HD25-II should be mandatory recommendations in my opinion Open and closed sections would be very nice, as well

You should sell them and get better speakers

Mcspanky37
Yeah- sell something my friend gave me as an informal gift. Sounds like a smashing idea

I wouldn't upgrade.

If you haven't already seen it, this is the user manual:

Positioning is key due to their design.

Thanks so much. My room is pretty, uh low key and probably not optimal, but hopefully I can get it set up pretty nicely.

So these speakers are the 201 series IV. Total speaker noob here: I hooked them up to my Sony 240w receiver and was just wondering if I should go about upgrading it for the sake of these speakers or not.

Anyone who says Bose sucks- I don't care I got them for free, so adios

I personally feel the Shure 840s are better than the M50s and are in the same price range

Make sure you have a correct seal. Push your headphones in, not too deep, but you should hear a HUGE difference

[QUOTE="Bozanimal"]It seems the main issue is that you were upgrading without knowing why you were upgrading. You weren't trying to improve bass, get a wider soundstage, or looking for comfort: You just wanted something "better." But headphones aren't cars. In the headphone world a Mustang isn't necessarily better than a Ford Fiesta, depending on the owner. In some cases upgrading results in worse sound. For example, hip-hop enthusiasts moving from the Audio Technica ATH-M50 (~$140) to a Sennheiser 600 might be hugely disappointed by the lack of emphasis in the low-end, and what would likely seem like overwhelmingly sharp highs by comparison. Since you're dropping quite a chunk of change, I'd consider returning the Sennheisers and doing some shopping around at local stores, if you have any available. You'll save yourself time, money, better define your goals, and get a clear understanding of the differences between the various headphones. I probably would have bought the Audio-Technica AD700's had I not tried them on first and found them tremendously lacking in low-end, yet other listeners are perfectly content. The one thing I've learned about mid- and high-end headphones is that you cannot trust reviews. You've got to take them for a test drive. I hope this is helpful, and you're able to find the right headphones for you. :) Boz

Great advice. I upgraded from my AT ES7 to Shure 530s and I had no idea what sound signature was all about when I did so and it took me a long time to see how many things the 530s did better than the ES7s, but I also learned that the ES7 did quite a few things damn well for half the price

So what does the HD600 do well and which genres are best for these headphones? Also would a good dac improve the sound quality?

SolidSnake2011-
If they're similar enough to the 650s( and from what I've read, yes) then they should excel at electronic, jazz and classical
