I haven't seen them too often since they were discontinued, but I think they're typically $450 in stores--splitting the cost of the 40GB and 80GB models. If you're lucky, maybe you'll catch one at $350. I wouldn't count on anything less than that, though.

If you don't mind going used, maybe check out Craigslist, or some other local classifieds.

I ended up swapping the Sonata for a Coolermaster CM 690 case, and OCZ StealthXStream 600W PSU. And the Raptor for a 750GB Samsung Spinpoint. Thanks for the help.

[QUOTE="Penguin_dragon"]I think a RAID 0 would deliver better performance and give you lots of room for not to much more, but I've never actually seen a head to head comparison.musclesforcier
I'd rather just get a 500gb 7200.11 for cheaper.

I would too, but he says he's been using a 60GB laptop drive, and hasn't had any problems with space there.

Is there any major difference with the P35-DS3L? Going by this page (assuming the revisions are all correct), it looks like I'd be losing some potential FSB/RAM overclocking speed, RAID, 2 SATA ports, something with the BIOS, and eSATA. Is that it?

I wouldn't normally go for a pack-in PSU, but Antec is pretty good, is it not?

I got the additional case fan to put near the front of the case as intake. There should be one included for the rear.

I could go for an 8800GT, and that'd save maybe $50. I might be able to save about $35 on an E6550, but that's a bit of a jump down performance-wise. My friend's alright spending a little extra.

He says he's not worried about hard drive space, and would rather go with the Raptor. He doesn't watch a lot of video, or keep stuff forever like I would. :)

I'm mainly wondering if there's any potential problems with the components I've chosen. Whether it's incompatabilities, or just poor choices.

He's going to be using it mostly for web design work, and some not-too-heavy gaming. (CS:S, for example.) Probably not going to overclock.

For the motherboard, I've got a Gigabyte EP35-DS3R or ASUS P5K in mind. I may end up putting this thing together myself, which I've never done from start to finish, so I'd kind of prefer something that's not a total pain in that regard.

Please keep in mind that I'm in Canada.

Here's the proposed specs:

Antec Sonata III Black ATX 16IN Mid Tower Quiet Case 3X5.25 2X3.5 4X3.5IN 500W 120MM Fan - $89.99

Samsung SH-S203B Black SATA DVD+RW 20X8X16 DVD-RW 20X6X16 DL 18X/12X INT DVD Writer OEM W/ Vista SW - $22.99

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64BIT DVD OEM - $99.99

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Dual Core Processor LGA775 3.0GHZ Wolfdale 1333FSB 6MB Retail *Limited Qty* - $198.99

Gigabyte EP35-DS3R ATX LGA775 P35 1600OC FSB DDR2 1200OC 1PCI-E16 SATA RAID Sound GLAN Motherboard - $126.99 (Possible price match to $125.42)

BFG GeForce 8800GTS 650MHZ 512MB 1.94GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out Retail Video Card - $199.99 ($229.99 - $30 rebate)

Western Digital Raptor 150GB SATA 10KRPM 16MB NCQ 5YR MFR Warranty Hard Drive - $176.99

Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E 120MM Cooling Fan 1200RPM 20.1DBA 49.0CFM FDB - $14.99 (Possible price match to $11.34)

Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X4096-6400C5 4GB DDR2 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL 5-5-5-18 240PIN Memory Kit - $88.88 (Possible price match to $81.90)

With free ground shipping, ExpressRMA of 3%, and GST, it comes to $1,135.35CAD, before any price match attempts or rebates.

And here's my questions:

  • Is the PSU going to be good enough? This page puts it at 500W, with two 12V rails, at 17A each. The 8800GTS seems to want 425W, with 28A on the 12V rail.
  • Will the size of the 8800GTS give me any grief with either the mobo or case?
  • Will the RAM work with the motherboard? Some pages say the RAM wants 1.9V, while the motherboard may only support 1.8V.
  • Is 64-bit Vista going to cause any grief? My friend says he mainly uses Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash (all CS3), and Outlook 2007. With Kaspersky Internet Security 7. Anything else, he can probably substitute.

Thanks in advance.

It's hard to disagree with a review I haven't read. :)

Also, I think you're supposed to keep it in here:

Do you know whether the 8600 would outperform the 7900 for video processing in XP? No HD discs, mind you. Just DivX/XviD, DVD, WMV, H.264, and so on.

Am I likely to get any significant performance boost over a 6800XT with an 8600GT? Particularly concerning Shader Model 3.0 games? I'm sure I would with the 7900GS.

I've read the 8600GT is pretty weak for gaming (sometimes beat by a 7600GT), and I'm not likely to get Vista anytime soon, to get any DX10 benefit. However, I'll probably spend more time watching video than gaming, so I'm wondering if the GF8 series would automatically outperform the GF7 in that category, in WinXP.

Thanks. :)

I'm considering upgrading my video card to a 7900GT. I don't know much about electrical/PSU requirements, so I'm hoping someone can help.

The system requirements for the video card are saying a 350W PSU, "with 12V current rating of 20A."

I'm about 90% sure this is the PSU I've got. It came with the Antec Sonata II case, but short of opening the case, and taking out the PSU, I can't tell what it is exactly.

http://www.antec.com/specs/SP450_spe.html

It seems to have two 12V columns. (Is "rails" the right word?) +12V1 has a max load of 15A, +12V2 is 17A.

Does that mean I'm out of luck?
