I've seen my name get dragged through the mud here on these forums long enough, and quite frankly I will not sit by and accept the people who consume our product to just turn around and stab me in the back after the work I have put into this site FOR YOU, THE CONSUMER.
First off, Jeff Gerstmann was not "fired", he simply left to pursue other interests. Perhaps bigger and better things? Or perhaps he'll move onto a less viewed website, like 1UP.COM. Either way, he left on his own accord and was not fired for giving a video game review.
As a matter of fact, while we're on the subject of Kane & Lynch, I think it's a great game. I'm entitled to my opinion, just like Jeff is. However, when you're in a position where consumers hang onto your opinion and value it like gold, you must hold yourself responsible for bias. Jeff was obviously bias against Eidos, and always has been. Kane & Lynch does have some problems, like most games out right now. Even games as popular as Assassins Creed could have made improvements. We can all improve, but Jeff did not give Kane & Lynch that opportunity. He simply buried it in his video review, and his attempts to applaud the multiplayer were only thrown in there for protocol, and noone found his words believable on that at all.
Yes, Eidos was advertising their game on Gamespot.com, but do you think that is the first company who has advertised their game on the site? Of course not. But only until Jeff leaves, does anyone make a fuss about this. If it weren't for those advertisements, Gamespot wouldn't be the number one site for video game news.
And while we're being a little free here, and speaking off the record with one another, those of you who're making personal and idle threats towards my life need to understand that I have a job to do. My job did not entail firing Jeff, and that is not what I did. The only reason Jeff Gerstmann has not come out with a statement, is because he knows he can't look at the camera and bold face lie to you people. He cannot say he was fired over that review, because the statement would be FALSE. He is enjoying his spot in the internet limelight right now, and doesn't want his name to fizzle out just yet. It's all part of HIS MARKETING SCHEME. He markets himself, just like we market games. Someone that I've spoken with on several occassions has always told me "CONTROVERSY CREATES CASH". That is exactly what Jeff is doing right now. He is simply surrounding himself with this controversy, in hopes that it will largen his fan base before moving on to his next venue of biased statements, and unprofessionalism.
The only reason we didn't fire Jeff was because of YOU, the Gamespot community. We value you more than you will ever know, and we thank you for *not* cancelling your accounts and staying with us through this difficult time. Once all of this is over, and things return to normal, look forward to a lot of new features and programs we'll be bringing to you in the year of 2008!
