First of all, correction;

Its the hip/cool thing to be into.

Under the surface;

Its an ego/self esteem issue. Its just like most gamers are unhealthy, anti-social, and unexperienced with the opposite sex. Its like a way of them overcompensating for their lack of ego or self esteem to feel superior to others.

Atheism doesn't dominate the internet, it dominates niche/anti-social activitives on the internet commonly associated with "nerds" for lack of a better term.

The answer your question, is to look at the other things in common atheists have with eachother on the internet, and it makes perfect sense really.

I constantly hear atheists bark about their beliefs. They bark more than any bible thumper I've met.

Which is normally followed by me showing them how their logic is flawed, after that is followed by them having a negative reaction.

And this question perplexes me also.

Anytime I hear someone listens to one genre and only one genre. Or only listens to variations of rock and metal (yes metal is a variation of rock I know), I assume they have mental issues, or are really bad with the opposite sex.

Posted my taste in music in a thread on battlelog and actually asked people to troll or diss me. Not a single troll, I was disappointed.
