BlackBond's Cory Barlog (GoW's Creator) System Wars Interview

Damn this board moves is hard to keep up.

So you work in the industry?

No, but I did like your GoW game and I am definately looking forward to GoWII. You better not let me down man :P

I'm afraid to think what will happen if it let's you down....

My life will end and then I'll jump off a bridge of course. Not really lol. But hey even great games are let downs some times. Look at Halo 2. There are a lot of games that turned out as a let down to me but I still enjoyed them anyways. You can find fault in any game if you try hard enough. My roomate is getting it anyways so whether its amazing, great, or average it doesn't affect my wallet.

Yeah Halo 2 bummed me out as wel. I loved the first game...both single and multi player. But the second one..with the smaller FOV and the Dual WWielding always made me feel like I couldn't see enough of what was around me. cory

[QUOTE="Blackbond"]So I have to ask Cor. What do you think of Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden?corybarlog

Ahhh great question. This should make some headlines on Kotaku :) I really like DMC 1 and 3. I just picked up the 3 pack of all the games and will hopefully have some time to replay them. I like the fighting system in the games...the storeies are ok but have never really grabbed me. I am looking forward to seeing what they do with DMC4 though...the early vids look somewhat promising...but again in they are really early and the game will most likely change a lot before it ships. As for Ninja gaiden ...I don't get too much time to play when a games is a notoriously hard as that game is I don't get to spend the time with it I wish I could. I honestly really don't like uber difficult that feel difficult for difficult's sake. Some people dig that, but not me. I haven't finished the game...mostly because it is too damn hard. If I had a ton more time to dedicate to it I could finish it, but in the end I just wonder what the point is. To each their own...I respect the quality of the game though, and the production vaules. The animations are freaking great. Story...not bad...but also not the greatest in the world.

What about you?

[QUOTE="Blackbond"]Sweet screw you Kotaku I am the man interviewing now :P

Well I like all the games in all the series except DMC 2. I had only played recently as of this year DMC 3 because I haven't had access to my brothers PS2 from college. But to put it blunt. You give me GOW's story and brutal moves, with Ninja Gaiden's silky smooth gameplay and weapons, combined with the guns of and other transformations of DMC and then I think you would have an incredible game haha. I do like Ninja Gaiden the best though. I am one of those people that likes difficult games for the sake of them being difficult. Just like Megaman games. Make sure YOU KEEP the God difficulty setting.

For my last question. This is going to cause an uproar I know it lol. What do you think about the PS3 not having rumble? Its not going to be the same to be curshing bones and feeling any sudden jolts in my hands. While we are at it what about Tilt? You could make some good moves with that. Like pulling back on a monsters head until it breaks, moving the controller upward and downward like you are on top of a monster bashing his face into the ground ect.

First...we have God difficulty and Titan Difficulty...It is not as crazy hard as Dante Must Die mode or anything, but it is no slouch either. As far as the rumble is a bit of a bummer but as a designer I am more interested in what the gameplay in the game will have to offer rather than some of the feedback. Rumble definely contributes to the immersion, and to be sure I am a big fan of it, but I am quite confident we can make fun gameplay experiences without the need for was done with so many gamesbefore the rumble feature right? Man the Megaman games frustrated the hell out of me as a kid. I still played them a lot, but they made me so mad.

[QUOTE="Blackbond"][QUOTE="corybarlog"][QUOTE="Blackbond"]Okay last thing Cory and then I'm out for a bit:

God of War PSP is it going to happen?
Why does everyone think Megaman is hard. Is it really that hard?
Have you ever thought of implementing multiplayer or Co-Op in God of War?

1. No idea on this as of yet...I think it is a great idea though.

2. Cause its hard. It really is. Some people are like Rain man savant good at games, and they think "This isn't that hard" but to the rest of us it is freaking had.

3. Yes...though interent based melee games are a hard nut to crack. Very hard to deal withLatency when you are doing something as exacting as melee...very hard to fake it the way you can fake the projectile based stuff.

Seriously quesiton would you guys like buy a game that only did mult player co-op on the system and not on the internet?

Halo 1 and Halo 2 my man. They didn't have online co-op and if you can implement an offline co-op

Thanks for the info...good talking to you too man. I am the real deal though. I mean my over use of the ellipses should be evidence enough. :) cory

it's me...check the latest post...halfway down. there is a link to this thread

Is Sony the Definition of Arrogance?

In a word yes. Sony really needs to shape up and fast. The Wii and 360 show no signs of slowing down while the PS3 isn't even out in Europe yet. How this company remains so confident and arrogant is beyond me. Underneath it all they are probably scared and in a state of panic. What does Sony take its user base for? Blind fools? Most gamers don't want to have to pay extra money for Blu-Ray when they could be buying games instead. To me Sony is alienating its customers who are the casual gamer. The gamers that just picked up a system to play without much thought. Those same people aren't going to pay $500 to $600 just to casually play video games. At the moment the PS3 is just a mess and management up at Sony is making the situation worse. Get it together Sony. I enjoy having three systems in the console war.

Something everybody should know

I laugh at the ignorance of people who actually believe that Xbox isn't stronger then the Gamecube and Playstation 2. It is a FACT that power wise from strongest to weakest it goes Xbox, Gamecube, then Playstation 2. Even knowing that people try to post pics of games claiming that Gamecube and PS2 had better looking games. Well I'm here to put that myth to rest. Not only was Xbox more powerful it had the games to show it.

  • Dead or Alive Ultimate
  • Doom 3
  • Ninja Gaiden Black
  • Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay
  • Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

Playstation 2 and Gamecube have nothing on these games graphically. Although PS2 is the better system to claim that Xbox wasn't graphically superior to the other two systems is ignorance in itself.

The most under appreciated game ever

2002 GOTY

9.7 on Gamestop

9.6 on Gamerankings

#3 Rated on Gamerankings

Yet still this game doesn't and never will get the recognition it deserves. It wasn't enought that it got a 9.7, it wasn't enough that it recieved 2002 GOTY honors, and it wasn't enough that it is the third ranked game at Gamerankings. To me Metroid Prime goes down as the most under appreciated game of ever created. Even hated games like GTA get more respect then a master piece like Metroid Prime. Everybody claims that 2D Metroids were better. Sure they were but that doesn't take anything away from what Metroid Prime accomplished. All that means is that the 2D games were master pieces that surpassed even that of Metroid Prime. You owe it to yourself as a gamer to try this game if you haven't played it all ready. To me its the game of the generation and the reviews speak for themselves.

Online Fighters

Why does Jann Lee always get kicked out of restaurants? Because he's always screaming and yelling for some WA-TAH!!!

My oh my how the times and fighters have passed by. Currently I have Doa 4 but I can't use its online function properly because the net at college is slow but I remember all the great times me and my friends had playing Doa 2 on Dreamcast so I decided to pick up DOAU. Since I'm at home I decided playing on my FiOS internet connection at home and the online component blew me away.

You would think waiting and watching would be boring but that's half the fun. Its just like back in the days where you talk crap as scout other players techniques while waiting your turn.

Gameplay wise online was virtually flawless. It played almost as well online as it did off. The only problems I had where sometimes the game locks up in the lobby and black screens. Finding games is easy and moves aren't clumsly or messed up due to lag. Now I know a lot of people out there say Virtual Fighter would be technically impossible online but maybe they need some of the programing savy that Team Ninja has.

Overall the game isn't as great as Virtual Fighter 4 or Doa 4 but since my boy and I played so much Doa 2 back in the day we will spend some more time with this before moving on. He doesn't have 360 yet. There should be no exuse for fighting games not to have online it just makes them amazing. Lastly anyone who thinks this is a noob game I dare them to get online and face a SS. You will get your ass handed to you and cry that you never even had a chance. But hey that's why they are the best right? If you like 3D fighters you owe it to yourself to put your fanboy googles aside and try the Doa series out.

BlackBond's Directional Pad Guide

Well now seems like a good time to make a guide/review for directional pads since all the Virtual Fighter 5 hoop la. As someone who is constantly playing old school games I am very picky about my D-Pads. Controls affect everything in games like Contra, Gunstar Hero's, ect. But I was looking for a game that required lightning quick reflections and precision on the D-Pad so what else would I go besides Megaman 8) There will be 5 controllers I will be testing out on the PC versions of Megaman X5 an X6. Xbox Duke and Controller S, Dual Shock, The 360 controller, and the PC Wireless cordless Rumble Pad 2. I have means and converters from Lik-Sang to hook each of them up so don't question my integrity

I won't even hold you guys off in suspense I'll get right to the 360 controller. This controller is the most comfortable out of all of them and performs all basic functions of all games well but there were some minor problems playing the game. Moving in any of the verticle or horizontal direction is easy but sometimes when I got into a clutch situation even with my nerves of steel and knowledge of the game I made mistakes. The problem lies with this. In X4 the battle with Slash Beast requires for precise dashing throw the air high enough to avoid his ground attacks but low enough so that you don't get hit by his counter attacks or projectiles. To do this you need to do slight jumps on a diagonal. The problem is with this D-Pad you aren't gonna press UP/RIGHT or UP/LEFT you end up pressing that little concave decension in each diagonal. I found my dashing too low not getting enough air because I was going left and right instead of UP/LEFT or UP/RIGHT. On contrary when I noticed this I over compensated and I was leaning more to hitting the up button and not getting as much movement with my jumps to dodge. The solution? Most people manipulate a D-Pad with their thumb to overcome this I used the area of my thumb below the center. Now this helped a lot but I don't know how accurate this method could be in a fighting game. Like wise if you have a larger thumb then I have you might be able to get better use out of this. This thing is notorious for anything with a diagnol or curved motion. Definately its biggest draw back. This thing is essentially only good for menu selection with UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHt.

D-Pad Rating 6.0/10

Next up the Controller S. This used to be the stable of my PC gaming before the Rumble Pad 2 came into the picture and it still is when I lend the rumble pad out. The D-Pad is nice and responsive but sometimes it feels to damn responsive. It performed well but I noticed tons of trouble when fighting Cyber Peakcock. A boss who likes to teleport to your left and right and shoots arrows that make you need to dodge quickly left and right. This is where this D-Pad ultimately shows its weakness. Going left to right on this thing is tough with out hitting DOWN/RIGHT, DOWN or DOWN/LEFT in the process. It is a constant pain. This constantly shortens dashes and causes you to get hit. Now before I continue I just picked up DOAU today also and played about a good 3 hours of it. How I manage with this controller after DOA2 on Dreamcast is beyond me. Moves the require motions such as FORWARD + FORWARD, BACK + BACK, or DOWN/FORWARD + DOWN/FORWARD have alearning curve because you tend to go in that direction one more time then you need to ah what a pain. This D-Pad is still managable and is still good. You just need to get used to it like getting used to a Dual Shock Analog Stick in a FPS :P It doesn't suffer from diagonal problems from the 360 though.

D-Pad Rating 7.0/10

Now I only used this one to be fair I have know clue why the **** I even bothered with this. Not only did I have to borrow this piece from one of my boys this is the sole reason why I never owned an xbox until Controller S came out. This thing isn't a D-Pad its an 8 way directional or something so I've heard? Anyway its garbage. I struggled with web spider because you can't even push a direction on this thing you just put your thumb in the middle and then just kinda feel your way around. Its like analog D-Pad fir crying out loud. Imagine trying to play Megaman X with a Joystick it just doesn't work. So I plugged it in and tried playing DOA sorry that crap just wasn't up to snuff. Performing Limbo Stun Combo's was a struggle. So then I tested it on Madden (I play Maden with the D-Pad) Running the ball is a complete joke lol. Okay I admit I am biased on this one because I just absolutely can't stand the D-Pad or the controller period lol

D-Pad Rating 5.0/10

Ah my friend the Dual Shock. You have served me well in many fighters and through the past in Madden. But you are shockingly the second most precise controller of the bunch. That being said you are the superior of all console D-Pads. There is never a mistake made with you while dashing, jumping, sliding ect. I always get the proper distance because your 4 arrows are seperated and easily accessible. Going left to right or hitting the diagonals is also easy. Using the thumb technique where you rest you part of your thumb below the center on you is not. But you don't need that you're good. But their is one problem with the D-Pad that I always hated but this hate was only exibited in Madden. Why is the damn thing so flat? It hardly feels like you are pressing down on it sometimes. If they would raise it no doubt it would be almost perfect. When I used my cross converter to use it on Doa (I have one cause bums at school won't play xbox cause they are cows and only use dualshocks) it played great. D-Pad nice and easy to use and never ended up tapping a direction any more times then I needed too.

D-Pad Rating 9/10

Now this people is what I call perfection in a D-Pad. It has all the benifits of the Dual Shocks D-Pad except that "get this" Its raised! So you actually feel like you are pressing down on it. This and the circular feeling of the Genesis pad makes it the most accurate, comfortable, and accessable D-Pad there is. When I game on PC this is what I use. There is never a mistake at all playing any game and this is my tool of flawless I'll retire your ass only with the X-Buster and not get touched device. This thing is made by logitech and I did have a controller S that had a D-Pad like this but sadly I sold it. Therefore I could only test it on Megaman. No Doa or no Madden sorry guys Controller

Rating 9.5/10 or N/A due to lack of games tested

Lastly we have the Gamecube controller. Yay...Since I couldn't use this on my computer you know what I had to do...Bust out Megaman X anniversary collection on Gamecube duh lol. Anyways this thing is pretty bad. It is hard to get any direction down pact because the thing is too damn small. Why the hell did they make it so small? This is the only controller I ever use the joystick for if I'm playing Madden and that says something. There are constant deaths and loads of frustration from this thing in the fortress levels of X5. Looks like Nintendo is gonna get money out of me should I decide to download games on the Virtual Console cause this thing doesn't cut it. The only way I can find semi use to it is with the thumb technique. But even that is tough. I always looked t the GC D-Pad as just 4 additional inventory buttons. Like in Metroid Prime for switching visors. Seriously who ever used this thing in any game?

D-Pad Rating 5.5/10

So there you have it my Guide to D-Pads. The Dual Shock is clearly the best among consoles although I think the Rumble Pad is the best overall. These reviews reflect the D-Pad not the overall controller. I have tons of games at my disposal if anybody has any suggestions on games to try then let me know I'll add my input. I can use any of the 3 last gen controllers on all three systems. Yes I know I'm nice like that. I was thinking about doing the Dreamcast and SNES controllers too. But I'll leave those out unless people really want to here about them.

[QUOTE="Blackbond"]Just because the Ps1 was the better system doesn't mean it saved gaming. By that logic the Ps2 saved gaming.

Cartridges would have destroyed gaming.

Tell me what format is the Nintendo DS using and which system is winning.

Dodging ownage McDonaldsGuy are we?

Ive mentioned many times handhelds do not matter in console debates. GBA sold 75 million therefore GC did as well?

Hmmm very funny. DS and N64 are based on the same archietecture. Both 64 Bit both about the same graphics both use catridge format. See where I'm going?

Now where. DS is a handheld. I'm not saying I agree with McDonalds on everything but the console and Handheld markets are two completely seperate things.

Fair enough. A sensible opinion that I actually agree with.

You're taking some of the fun out of SW... :P

JJGY I'm smart enough to know when somone presents a good arguement and to admit when I'm defeated or I can't prove my point. McDonaldsGuy on the other hand...

lol, you weren't defeated by any means. You presented a perfectly good point but being the hideious bastard I am, I shot it down :P
