I usually only spend a certain amount of time with games before I have to move on to find something new, so going back to revisit something i've already exhausted and paying almost just as much as the original game price put's me off.
If a game is being launched with a season pass and it looks like it could turn in to a AAA game - then i usually wait to see if there is a 'Game Of The Year' edition released. I did this of 'Shadows of Mordor' as the GOTY edition was only released about 7 months after the initial release. I got to play all the DLC alongside the main missions so it just felt like a massive complete game, but only cost me £25 on Playstation+ so was a massive saving as would have cost me £65 had i got the season pass with the initial game. I was also able to get a really good 70hrs out of it in one go - rather than playing 40hrs, waiting 3 months then going back in for just another 30hrs which would have lost my interest.
Too much hype puts me off - I HATE having games, movies & music shoved down my throat & be told 'YOU WILL ENJOY THIS!!!'. I've never been in to big RPG's but decided to give The Witcher 3 a try but I just couldn't get in to it - sorry fans
Extremely interesting video Danny. Have played through GTA5 twice on PS3 so wasn't interested in it on PS4. However could be a whole new experience, and almost entirely new game, in FP mode, so now I'm possibly thinking about playing this through again. But may leave it a year or so first
Great piece Danny. I'm 33 and already feel games are now getting away from me. I still have no idea what BETA's are all about and everything seems to be getting too complex. Funny you mention Monkey Island as I just bought 1 & 2 on the PSN for £3.99 as well as Legacy Of Kain & Soul Reaver: Legacy Of Kain 2. These are fantastic games, but more importantly, they are simple games. I feel that some modern games have been lost in their complexity and just put me off buying them. AssCreed would have been better if they left out the modern sections and just left it set in the past, made it simple. Destiny just seems to complex too. With it's BETA release and people on max upgrades before it's even released, meaning I'll get hammed buy pro's the second I get online and I'll just die repeatedly and get no fun out of it. Rockstar seem to have it down to a T. Red Dead & GTA are both amazing but also simple. there's no powering up your character and needing to be a specific level before you can complete certain task. It's just a great story telling with simple mechanics.
I guess I'm just an old skool gamer & enjoy great games for what they are, rather than being involved in a whole media event which now surrounds modern games,
@blangenakker ha ha - that's a fantastic comment. Watching someone else play a game online is rubbish. Especially when it's the dev guys who just make it look easy & pull all the special moves off with ease & make it look easy to do. Then you get the game...............
@XBlade1X @Poodger Agree. I'd rather play a more complete, close to end product demo 2/3 months before it's released than a tech demo 12 month+ before release. What's the point?
I don't know much/anything about BETA's or ALPHA's or whatever else there is. Are they free? I'm on old skool gamer and had quite a collection of demo disc's once. They were fantastic & as Danny said, it gave you easy free access to games & genres you may never play or part money to own because it's out the norm. The trial section on the Playstation Network is good as allows you a set time, usually 1hr, to play a game then immediately buy if you like it. But I think you need to be a PSN+ member for this. But it would be good if they gave you a few (brand new game) demo's every month alongside the older free games on the PSN+ / ( input Xbox equivalent here) as this would be a direct replacement for the CD's on the front of mags. It would also be much easier for the consumer rather than having a limited time/availability to apply for the BETA code, get the BEAT code, log on & input said code to then wait for the official time to start......lame. it's too complicated & I can't be bothered.
