@Aussie3318 A lot of people seem to want that comparison because they know which would win, even though what determines the price of both systems is very different. There are far too many factors to just say build a computer at the price of a mass production, sold at a loss console.

@Kainkillers Keep in mind these screens are scaled, they're not going to show the PC resolution advantage. That said the system gamespot is using for this comparison is overkill, a system half as good as the one used would still be beating consoles.

Is exaggerating the price really the only argument console users can use against PC looking better? Even this comparison is faulty, if you want a real comparison show the screenshots in their unscaled form. Console users seem to love the idea of 1080p but deliberately avoid recognising PC is the best platform to obtain that res.

PS3 launch date - November 11, 2006 G80 launch date - November 8, 2006 PS3 was obsolete before it even hit shop shelves in Japan, the 8800s launched back then are still far ahead of everything consoles have demonstrated. If you purchased a 8800GTX/GTS when they first came out; your GPU is still maxing every cross platform game at above console resolution.

@ thundersheep You are looking at direct feed captures up close, console games are designed to be viewed stretched several times the images size and a fair distance away from a low DPI screen. What you are seeing is the real image, try hooking it up to a monitor some time and seeing them up close on a high DPI screen.

@ Jasonfinger Putting aside you are clearly clueless about PC cost and capability, it's interesting that you don't seem to mind spending a premium on every game and peripheral you buy for consoles. Consoles sell at a significant loss to reel you in, then they over charge on everything you buy. For example 120GB 360 HDD £88, 750GB PC HDD £86. Call Of Duty: World At War 360 £40, PC £30.

"Why would i spend thousands of dollars to play a game on pc when i can buy a 360 for 300. Gears of war 2 looks so much better than these games." Why would you buy a luxury car when you can just get a cheapo one? They both get you from A to B and they are both limited by the speed limit, regardless of the vehicles capabilities. Not everyone is interested in the 'good enough' experience offered by mass produced systems like consoles, which can be applied to any product and service. With all that said yet again console users are severely exaggerating PC gaming cost, you only look at the up front cost and not the whole picture. That console needs a television to work and you are paying a licensing fee on every game and peripheral purchase, that all adds up in the long run. If you decide you have a HDTV already so don't count it under the cost, what is there to stop me claiming PC gaming is just the cost to upgrade an existing computer? Many people already have a home PC, upgrading that for gaming isn't that expensive today. PC will always be more expensive than consoles, but console users blow the expense way out of proportion.

They didn't even need the system they used for this comparison, what's the point in playing these games at 1920x1200 if you are just going to downscale them to 720p for comparison? You are going to show off PC performance advantages by forcing it down to the consoles playing field? That's like comparing gaming PCs 512mb vram Vs consoles 256mb vram; but only using games built around consoles 256mb. They should have used a mid range gaming computer for this comparison, something with a dual core and a 9800GT for example. Even then there would have been visual advantages demonstrated on PC; without is seeming to only come from a top of the line machine.

What a pointless comparison, even if you are using two year old hardware; PC still offers a visual advantage over consoles. Static hardware by its very nature will always eventually fall behind constantly evolving hardware, in this gens case it happened even before the PS3 came out when the 8 series launched a few days earlier. People exaggerate you will be upgrading every year, the people who purchased 8800s on launch still max every game consoles have thrown at PC; way above console settings at that. (on a side note the console users in here aren't half making some ridicules comments, you lot wouldn't last 5 minutes in System Wars with those arguments)

Know what else makes this a pointless comparison? Shrinking 720p shots to 573x332 and then letting jpeg compression cause havoc. Someone could provide 1080p screenshots for comparison with 720p screenshots and you couldn't tell the difference with this comparison method. Causing a platform war aside; GameSpot approached this comparison like an average Joe gamer, not a professional review site.
