So recently I've seen a lot of disturbing photos of animal/child abuse and other things on facebook with a message along the lines of "OMG, how can people do this! if you're against [insert issue here], click share!!!" I usally just hide the story or delete the friend if they do it on a regular basis.
Getting sick of this I made an update about how nothing benefits the cause with just a click of the mouse, followed by people giving me flack saying I have no respect and it's "their facebook and they can share whatever they want."
I definitely feel strong about such issues, but I think it's ridiculous about how these people think they're working towards a cause. Do you think this type of "slacktivism" works?
My thoughts is that the person who created the photo did it not for the sake of raising awareness, but just for the sake of people sharing these disturbing pictures because they fall victim to the strong emotions. I think if you feel strongly about it, make the effort to donate (most charities allow it online) or open a discussion rather than shocking people. It seems like it actually takes away from the actual cause because the discussion turns into "these kind of people shouldn't live, etc. etc." instead of actually educating others that this kind of stuff happens and there's charities happy for any type of donation or volunteering.
What are you thoughts?
