We had some talk about Alone in the Dark on this board so I thought about asking - is the fourth installment of the game any good? Thing is, I've seen it available on www.gog.com for a long time now and the price is not that bad. Reviews are quite mixed though. Is it worth playing through and how is the game overall? Does it have any good puzzles (I love puzzles) or scares? Would love to hear opinion from someone who played it and preferably beat it. :)

I hope Dead Space 3 will be kind of horrorish. And even though it's going to be an FPS, I hope to get a few jumps out of Metro: Last Light.

when the weather cools down in a couple weeks I'll hit either Gamestop or Gametrader, I'm near both and also a place called Dimple's Records who have moved on to DvD's and CDs. I get some anime DvDs there and they carry used games for every system from every generation so that might be the first place I try.

You can check eBay for Eternal Darkness. I don't know what's the situation in the USA (I use eBay UK) but here it's pretty cheap.

Yeah i agree that GCs are cheap but don't forget games. Still want to get MGS - Twin Snakes and Zelda - Wind Waker and they are pretty hard to find. :) Even though Eternal Darkness is rather cheap game...

Hmmmm... And you're getting married. She at least lets you play whenever you like and as long as you'd like, though, I hope?

:?

Word of warning: If she's not understanding of your hobby now, or if she badgers you to stop playing or limit the time per week that you play, that could become a serious issue in the future. Just speaking from experience. If she's cool with your devotion to gaming and doesn't mind that you play, then full-steam-ahead. But make it clear that you are a gamer even though she isn't, and if that's a problem, work it out sooner than later and establish boundaries, for yourself and for her.

(By that, I DO NOT mean being a ****, I mean, communicate on the subject)

Does she enjoy ANYTHING in the world of gaming? I dated a girl once who rolled her eyes at console gaming but played "Bubble-Bobble" and "Tetris" on her PC, so I got her "Lumines" for my PS2 which she loved, and then it was a short hop from there to get her playing Tiger Woods PGA. A lot of the time, it's the idea of the controller which intimidates some women, or the "stigma" of the gamer-geeks she knew in school who were socially maladjusted. If you can find a game which interests her or makes her laugh, etc., then you have a finger-hold by which to show her how much fun it is... Usually I try to start with games that two people play at the same time, instead of an adventure game, etc., which are single-player experiences.

Perhaps you can turn her...

:)

Oh, she is completely fine with me being a gamer. I can play as long as I like and as often as I like. She also does not mind me collecting horror DVDs and other habits. :)

As for her - she plays a round of DJ Hero with me (mostly just singing karaoke while I DJ :D) not really into casual games either. Probably tried Farmville on facebook and that's pretty much it.

Oh she also loves Mario games and that's the only reason why I'm thinking about getting Wii. :D We went way off-topic, lol. But it's all cool in my front. :)

ON TOPIC: Never really wanted to try this game but thought about getting it for my collection. Prices start at 70 pounds (100 US dollars?). Stopped "wanting" it.

as of now. silent hill downpour is scarier than resident evil 5. so yeah. silent hill is keeping pace with horror and survival with breakable weapons and creepy interactions. as for RE explosions and guns. overall, i think silent hill wins by just not having to rely on your guns, because of the ammo your saving up for the boss. :))kevkyl
It's not fair calling Resident Evil 4 or Resident Evil 5 a Resident Evil game because it isn't. It shares the same name but that's it. Resident Evil died with Code Veronica (last survival-horror Resi). While Silent Hill sticks to it's roots (more or less). This is primarily why right now I respect SH developers much more than Capcom. Capcom noticed that the action/adventure (Resident Evil 4, 5) sells better than survival-horror (Resi 1-3, 0, code veronica) and now they stick to making action games. Capcom does not care about hardcore fans. And I was Resi fan since 1996.. :(

[QUOTE="Icepick_Trotter"][QUOTE="--T-Virus--"][QUOTE="Icepick_Trotter"]Agreed. Minimalistic combat is the way to go. That's the best way to generate fear in the player. Better even if the possibility of combat is completely removed, and the player is forced to run and hide, kind of like Amnesia, which is to date the scariest game i've ever played.

That is probably why Forbidden Siren is very creepy game. Due to the fact that you cannot kill your enemies makes the game that much scarier.

Several people recommended me that game. Seems like i'll have to track down a copy. [On Topic] - A tip straight from the Amnesia guys: whatever monster there is in the game has to be seen as little as possible. The less you see it, the more you fill in the blanks with your own imagination and that's where most of the fear comes from. Maybe the ideal horror game would be one with no monster at all? And instead use noises and vague shapes or shadows to imply the presence of one? That ought to be stressful as hell.

Yes!! This is a great idea for a horror game. Kind of reminds me movie "Signs". Although they should have never shown the alien (and they did in the last 10 minutes of the movie). Also I think that just noises and shadows would not be enough. Thing is - gamer will understand that there is no chance he can get hurt (creepy shadows never hurt anyone). Dontcha agree?

[QUOTE="HiroArka"]

I caved in and gave my copy to a girl at work because she kept asking me for a whole week if she could have it .. Now I am regreting that choice very very much.

WHIPPED. You destroyed your own dignity. Never bow down to a woman EVER.

Or, well, only as far as it takes to look up her skirt...

... That's allowable.

Sad that learning this lesson has been at the cost of a hard-to-find game. Ouch.

Lol, sometimes I wish girls could be little bit more into gaming. Cause my fiancée... is not.
