Two d okay?

Can anyone tell me if the 3d games coming out can be played on a 2d dsi xl? I'm not interested in 3d but I don't want to buy the 3d games if they are going to look like crud in 2 d.

3DS games can only be played on the 3DS and the 3DS game carts are purposely designed so they won't fit into anything but a 3DS
