The best puzzle game of 2008

User Rating: 10 | Professor Layton and the Curious Village DS
Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a game that grows on you. On one hand, it's a brainteaser/puzzle game. On the other hand, it's a great point-and-click adventure game with a great story and hand drawn visuals. What comes together is one of the best puzzle games recent years. The gameplay is simple, using a shoe icon to move around St. Mystere while tapping on objects in the background or people to get puzzles (you get a puzzle from a person or the object contains a puzzle or reminds Layton of one). The puzzles are where the game really shines, they range from easy to very difficult, though due its gentle difficulty curve, you get introduced to the harder puzzles gradually. The puzzles are great.

In it, you play as Professor Layton and his assistant Luke. They are asked to come to the village of St.Mystere to help solve a inheritance dispute by the wife of the dead Baron Augustus Reinhold, Lady Dahlia. The baron's will states that he will give his entire estate to the person who finds something called the Golden Apple. The story then involves kidnapping, murder, and a really awesome twist. The story also integrates well with the puzzles.
Story: 10/10

As I said before, the graphics are hand drawn, the whole village of St. Mystere looks beautiful. The full motion video cutscenes are also look great and has great voice acting. The voice actors really fit their characters and the dialogue is nicely done. The sound effect are also great sounding. The in game music is mostly accordion but goes great with the village setting. There is a lot of sound for a DS game.
Graphics and Sound: 10/10

This game has a lot of replay value to it. The main story takes about 10 hours, though it's fun walking around the village searching for hidden puzzles after you beat the game. You can also replay any puzzles you already unlocked. The main source of replay comes from the new puzzles that come in weekly that you can download. Put all that together and you get a lot of replay value.

This is a great game, though it isn't as good as Chinatown Wars. But the steps it took before Chinatown Wars stops it from being a 9.5 or less.
