Ive been a PES fan since i got the first xbox, i thought the gameplay was much better so every year chose it over fifa (despite being a doncaster fan - a team not in pes). But the gameplay has been getting steadily worse compared to fifa and after experiencing the poor effort made by konami this year in the demo, im about to make the switch to fifa. Who cares about graphics when they still havent sorted the gameplay out?
We got the first hands-on with this year's PES, as Konami showed us gameplay, tactics, and those much-talked-about character models.
The competition between football games looks set to be fiercer than ever this year. EA Sports showed its hand early, demoing FIFA 10 all the way back in April when it was only 45 percent complete. Konami responded with a teaser trailer for Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, which showed an extraordinarily realistic-looking Lionel Messi tearing up the pitch. Today, Konami offered us the first chance to play its game in central London so that we could assess the gameplay, features, and players firsthand.
The first trailer for Pro Evo 2010 emphasised player likenesses, and from what we saw of the preview build, the in-game models deserve as much praise. Players from Liverpool and Barcelona--the only two teams included in this demo--looked incredibly realistic, with Steven Gerrard and Lionel Messi in particular looking just like their real-life counterparts. The most impressive aspects of the character models were the fine details, such as arm hair, the rippling material effects on their shirts, and their overall likeness to the real players.
The build we played was running on the PC, which is apparently the format that the game is developed on, and we used the Xbox 360 pads to play the game. Konami has said that it's not introducing 360-degree control this year, addressing the major upgrade to FIFA 10, but it is something that's being considered for Pro Evo in the future. Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that even at this early stage, the game plays very well, although it was sadly too early to pick up some of the finer tweaks that have been made to this year's game.
The big upgrade for this year's game is the tactics system, which includes two new features. The team-style feature allows you to tweak defensive and offensive team strategies using sliding scales. Both attacking and defending have their own tweaks on a 100-point scale. For example, you can set player support higher if you want your teammates to move ahead of the ball carrier to receive a pass, or you can set it lower if you want them to stay behind for a more defensive game. Konami has done a great job of creating visual feedback for these changes in the menu, so you can see their effect immediately onscreen.
In addition to team styles, there's a new card system that takes advantage of specific player strengths. Each player has access to five cards that can focus player attributes, and these can be useful in specific situations. For example, you can turn off Gerrard's natural tendency to track back, or you can switch on his ability to shoot from anywhere as and when it suits. It's another thing to think about when you're playing the game at a high level, but it looks set to add a new level of strategy to the game.
While the preview build that we saw was limited in terms of teams and modes, we did manage to take a sneaky look around the menu system to find out what's in store. Champions League mode looks like it will make a return from last year, as will Become a Legend mode, where you take control of a single player through his career. The visual presentation is slightly different from last year, with football tickets and magazines used to present some of the game options, but the music is still generic, covering genres described as "new wave" and "tech funk."
It's still early days for Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, but the first hands-on was certainly encouraging. We're looking forward to seeing more of the game at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, so check back next month for even more Pro Evo-related news.
the players in PES look so awesome but fifa 10 is so much better than pes... 09 was buggy and retarded at times but was still better than PES 09... i hav played the demo of PES and jst like the previous two games i jst cudnt stomach it... despite its brilliant graphics on the players its gameplay actually sucked really badly... i dnt care abt wat my player luks like i only care abt playing a gud football game and fifa 10 is the best that has come out so far. i recommend it to all even those who can't let go of the fact that PES is a thing of the past. for all its visual beauty they still cudnt get the players to run like human beings. i honestly felt insulted playing the demo and kermyt luks like u jst need a gud wank loser
Every Year PES comes out wit a demo and they don't put it in the PS store (US)so this year i set up another user on my PS3 and created another account and selected that I live in UK so I was finally able to download PES 2010 demo I been playing pes ever since it was winning eleven and i loved it.fifa had no chance wit PES but when it moved on PS3 i was little disappointed but I still played it just cuz i love futbal and fifa wasn't exciting enough for me.sorry fifa fans LOL but this year I was expecting a lot more then this demo and im hoping this is not the game play.I wish they focused on the gameplay instead of playing wit the menus too much.i was hoping that they were gonna add more tackles when ur tackling from the side should be different then when ur tacking from the front or the back or the other side. i was also hoping they would improve on the running. when u sprint it looks good but when u run slow it just don't look real. the through balls feel like they are not hard enough.. and when u run and press pass the players foot does not have any motion of that pass.. the graphics look awesome and I'm really happy about that hopefully the real game is gonna have smarter EI when it comes to the through balls and players running on the ball .I didnt play too much with the formation and all the new stuff cuz its no point the game is only 5 min. hopefully Im just not use to the game. i will still get it.
Having got Fifa 10 and playing the pes 2010 demo, i think fifa will come out on top once again this year. PES now just feels a little stodgy, its very had to tackle and the players still have the dreaded running motion!!! Fifa just feels realistic and is inexplaionably fun. but saying that i will probably get both this year......again
I loved FIFA 09, I play it like there was no tomorrow. But I downloaded both demos and I like more PES. It's more realistic for me, graphics are way, way, better, the flow and feel of the game feels like I'm playing for real. The ball has like a weight to it, I don't know how to describe it. I think I will SWITCH this year
Okay i downloaded both for the beautiful PS3. I first played FIFA back in 1994 on the good old Megadrive (Genesis to most people outside the UK) and then it was a truly shocking game. Then a few years later International Superstar Soccer on the PS1 came out and what a game, easily the best football game on any console. The arguments started FIFA or ISS. The majority went with ISS, this war continued right up until now 2010. FIFA still looks pretty, she dances well and looks great in PVC but does she really know what she is doing in the bedroom, whereas PRO has now had a makeover, her dancing has improved, she looks fantastic in PVC and my god she keeps you going all night in the bedroom. I just hope she lets me play with her friends too (online for those missing the link). Pro just plays slicker, it is more realistic, weighted pass, shots, crosses, through balls. If you want a standard arcade footie game then by all means pick up FIFA: x x x x x circle gooooooaaaaalll (or square i get confused between the two games ha ha), you'll thoroughly enjoy it. If you want a realistic football game then simply head for PRO and take a good two weeks off to master the elements of the game.
I have downloaded and played both demo's on my PS3...and for all those who have I think its blatently obvious which is the better footy sim of the 2, and was last year too (before that i have to admit that PES was better), anyone who prefers the gameplay of PES to FIFA at the moment ought to get a nintendo lol, its just not next gen enough! so come on Konami pull ya bladdy finger out!!!
Well...pes might have a shot with some previous FIFA fans as it seems that FIFA 10 will suck - nothing changed since 2009, actually made it even worse. So there will be some switchers, like me :)
Well guys ,I'm former fan of PES and wining eleven i been playing for around 10 years ( since SNES) anywah I played PES 10 demo and I played fifa 10 demo as well ... I can tell there are noticable improvments in pes 0 than last year but sadly there are keeping those boring and silly stuff like the dash of players and referee whistles where you feel are playing an old fashioned and tradtional football game from stone age . No Question PES still miles miles behind fifa10 , Fifa have been making serious enahcments which gives you the sense that you are playing a true next generation game ..
"@pes isnt realistic........ the ball fills wid helium wen u shoot frmmm behind 40 yards..... if u know wat i mean." hahahahaha And it's more realistic to have killer shots on goal from over 40 yards. The best players in the world past and present would struggle to hit the target time after time from over 40 yards! and you call this unrealistic. "they concentrate more on gameplay unlike pes" You should concentrate less on games and more on how to write properly
http://www.pesrss.com/rss/EN/8/PES-2010%3A-Major-additions-confirmed-for-further-realism/ Check out this link to the cool new stuff pes has. Fifa has nothing!
Looking at the screen shots the first thing I notice is only "KONAMI" banners are lined along the sidelines, is this another indication of license issues?. While the majority of comments are focused on game playability, the one issue that keeps me from climbing on this product is the licencing issue. I want to play my EPL team (Bolton) and not have to edit medival names to the current. Konami has always impressed with there graphics and player likenesses. I had there product WE 11/8, and lost interest early thanks to the single sponsor advertising, ridulously easy goal scoring routes.. the ball always goes high, and the way the players ran ..like something from a kids cartoon. I'll check reviews before I jump aboard,,until your fully licensed KONAMI, I believe you'll always play second fiddle to FIFA.
@we dont give a fuk abt their so called strtegy crap..... fifa hazz got a way betta 1......... @pes isnt realistic........ the ball fills wid helium wen u shoot frmmm behind 40 yards..... if u know wat i mean. @fifa graphics r pretty gud..... they concentrate more on gameplay unlike pes. IN SHORT..... people chuck pes..... buuy fifa 10
Yees pro evolution best fotball game in the world all series are great hope they do a great game Fifa series are very very bad on Fifa better stop make fotball games all fifa games are stupid bad boring games i wish that ea to stop do soccer games and give the license to konami because every pro evolution game is a masterpiece.Fifa promises new engine new graphics new moves....but when they release its the same game only the menu and teams changed its the same disaster game as always.I hope they introduce lan in pes with ip because the ip Lan is the only advantage of fifa over pes if they make lan there will be no reason to play fifa anymore most still play fifa because pes don t have lan.
As some guy mentioned below, I too have been feeling quite a bit of shame about pro evo in it's latest few installments. Where i was once a braggart to all my lesser contempories who thought that fifa was the true path in life, gloating over them with the crisp, fast-paced action that was the pro evo engine. I now am reduced to a almost reclusive standpoint on football games. I own both fifa and pro evo now (something i've never done in the past) and fifa is endlessly impressing me where as pro evo is essentially the same game it's been for the past 5 or 6 years (infact they've made some changes to it that have just been unnecessary) Konami, i challenge you to turn pro evo into the source of pride it once was. Where fifa fans stood looking at the floor between their shoes saying "but we've got all the licenses..." whereas pro evo was the better game, and with a properly edited option file, blew fifa out of the water on every front.
game engine needs some big tweaks, and maybe less aggressive refs (red card happy) to nake the game have a better flow, its like a sin to tackle on this game, erm thats all.
I hope that both versions are good this year, so i can get both... and i hope that they make the PC version as good as the others... for once
i think the only people who like pes anymore are the ones who have someone to play with(not online), like me. Its the only saving grace of the series right now. And please allow matches for 10 on 10. that would be awesome
oh, and yes, PLEASE focus on the multiplayer. Give options to make a server and playing on lan. A complete overhaul of multi player can make pes2008/9 enjoyable
The tactic system seems interesting. but i want to know which dribbling style they are opting for. is it the 2006/7 or the 2008/9?
Another thing I want in this one is more difficult. In PES'09 I could easily win all the games in the season with good scores on Master League, even in the most difficult level. And i always think "I can't be so good". There is a really big difference between players abilities and the CPU. Ok the players will always be better, but they could make the CPU a little more trickier to be at. And with more difficult, we would be encouraged to make elaborated strategies and this "cards" would be really useful.
Konami has been sleeping with its PES. They created an amazing gameplay, but stoped evolving. "Winning Eleven" was really better than FIFA thats for sure, but the Konami's franchise stoped, while FIFA is getting better and better over the years and FIFA'09 is there to show us these. I still prefer PES, it's gameplay is still better in my opinion, but i feel like playing the same game year after year.
So far it looks encouraging. And the Master league looks brilliant this time round. Actually pretty excited about PES for the first time in 2 years.
Hey Applebyrne, you can play the Konami Cup and choose to control all teams as well as decide if you want a group stage, home/away fixtures and choose all the teams you want to participate. Me and a couple of friends have almost weekly tournaments and you can play a coop 2 on 1 as well as 1 v 1.
Ok, forget my question, just read other player notes and I think i'm gonna stick to FIFA as I've did for last 5 years :)
I have always played FIFA, tried PES 2007 or 2008 and hated it, though i maybe haven't played it long enough to see all possibilities. Can anyone objestively compare gameplay on FIFA and PES in order to get a clear view what should we buy this year ? FIFA has superb game modes: manager, be-a-pro, Ultimate team (!!!), Lounge mode for friends battles (which i use most often), very much customizable gameplay tactics, nice player movements, cool stadiums, etc. What about PES? Where do they exceed FIFA ?
40 football players , a ball and a stadium is enough for me , creating believable movement and gameplay is what they have to be working on , not torres's face!!
player movement? player manouvers? ultra fast passes? unability to hold shirts whenever you desire? where the HELL are they....
pes 2009 was a disappointment, but it was not failure. Online, u could only play with who live around ur state. Gameplay, it was not bad. It takes time to adjust to it, and it gets very frustrating in the progress of "adjusting". But i expect more realistic and fun at the same time in gameplay. Just being realistic won't win the us fans over fifa.
Love pes...but please bring back the ability to use the computer teams in a tourniment, for EG..in pes 6 if you were playing a world cup for example with your mates you could simpley move your controller over onto the team your mate was playing against and play against your mate...great fun and no long wait till you played again!!In all the next gen versions of pes you havent been able to do that????How hard is it put this ability back into the game...come on konami not all gamers are loners...we do have friend you no!!WORLD CUP NIGHTS HAVE NEVER BEEN THE SAME!!!!PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR LOYAL FAN BASE!!!!!!
Dey shud better add 360 degree if dey wna compete with FIFA....im a PES fan but last year,i was ashamed of d game, please dont my love for PES die
PES has long forgotten what made their title so great in the first place - gameplay. I switched from PES to FIFA over a year ago and so thankful I did. I want a true sim in a football game and FIFA allows me to play football in a realistic way. PES is ridiculously bad these days, especially online, (which is of course extremely important these days). f their showing off how great the players look, then I guess they're just digging a deeper grave for PES.
I dont want to see the hairs on players arms, i want game play, game play and more game play improvements!!!!!!! Bring this game back to wot WE want. Chuck in some player stats too (human players) cause i wanna know how many goals ive scored compared to friends :) Easy to do just every1 playing at your house has a log in... Bosh!!
I was born PES.Now it is dead to me and have jumped ship. Screw Konami and their empty promises. Each year is crappier and crappier.ONline is disgusting and makes me nauseous. Seabass needs an enema.
I like the sound of the cards thing and tactics bar, because its frustrating when your shouting at the tv for your winger to cut in or your striker to make a meaningful run. However good it will work, I probaly will only use it when loosing or need to defend a lead with fatigued players. Its a menu addition, so Il end up not using it and probaly not be forced to by the AI
