Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is a leap in the right direction

User Rating: 7 | Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones PS2
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, is the 3rd installment in Ubisoft’s, action-puzzle solving genre. Just as the others before it, this is a great game.

The game’s graphics are beautiful, the game play environments and characters look superb. The lighting effects add to the overall superb graphical presentation of the game. However it is not without its faults. The character renders in the cut scenes were not done well. The characters, especially the Prince, were lacking substance and quality. His hair seemed 2D, like paper and his hands, closed or open, looked like all the fingers were joined together. The background still had its quality; it’s just that some more work could have been put into the Prince and the other characters in the cut-scenes.

The game’s sound was good, however this is one of those games where surround sound works at its best. If you don’t use surround sound, this is one of those games with really loud sound effects, and low music and voice acting tone, so you might find yourself turning up the volume of the TV from time to time.

Prince of Persia 3’s game play is just as it was in previous games, however in this installment, ubisoft added “stealth kills.” If you don’t know about the other Prince of Persia game play, it combines puzzle solving involving environmental obstacles and combat. It does not engulf you in too much puzzles or combat. However in the other Prince of Persia games, the combat seemed monotonous and repetitive. That’s the reason why “stealth kills” were added in this one. At certain points, when the timing is correct, you can execute a stealth kill on enemies. You can also do this on multiple enemies at a time, if they are placed in position and your timing is right. Now you can fail stealth kills because you are required to press the square button at certain intervals during the kills.

Prince of Persia 3 does not saturate you in boss battles such as in some games, like Devil May Cry, as a result the few bosses that the game does have are memorable. The boss battles also aren’t hack and slash. You are required to use the environments at your advantage in order to defeat the boss and the “stealth kill” principle applies to them in order to take them down.

Like in previous Prince of Persia games, you are allowed to slow down and reverse time. So just in case you cannot pass an obstacle slowing down time may help, similarly if you make a mistake and die, you can reverse time and begin from a certain point.

This Prince of Persia the Prince at certain points of the game changes into a “Dark Prince” the game play applies for the Dark Prince except that you will have to play the game and overcome the obstacles really fast because while in the dark form, your life will constantly decrease, and you will have to search for sand orbs in order to restore your life. The Dark Prince is also stronger and better equipped for combat rather than the Prince.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is a really good and satisfying game. It did not have a time counter on it, but I would average the time I spent playing it to be around 10 hours. Now while it doesn’t sound a lot, everything you do will be something different. The environments you go through will always be different and you are not bombarded with battles like in previous games. Prince of Persia 3 doesn’t have back tracking.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is a really good game and it is a leap in the right direction. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good sensible game to test your knowledge of puzzle solving and combat sequences. If you want a hack, slash and kill game, this game is NOT for you.
