Pool Pro Online Review
While a few multiplayer essentials, such as the ability to trash-talk, were absent, Namco's got the basic gameplay down.
The Good
- Low-latency multiplayer
- 8-ball and 9-ball modes
- Simple account registration.
The Bad
- No opportunity for text entry
- Bland graphics and audio.
Billiards games are best played with others, and Pool Pro Online is the only mobile game to offer networked multiplay for both 8-ball and 9-ball game types. The game isn't particularly stylish or original, but it works well enough over GPRS multiplayer that you'll forgive its bland presentation.
Getting an account up and running in Pool Pro is a relatively painless process. You have only to enter a username and password. If your username has been taken, the game will suggest a similar one. "Pool" was taken, but "Pool3" was not. Once you sign on, it won't be long before you're challenged. Alternately, you can view the list of online players and challenge one yourself. A respectable number of players seem to be signed on at all times, which is the best indicator of a multiplayer game's success.
During online play, you won't be able to see your opponent lining up his shot, but you'll view the resulting cascade of spinning balls. It's unfortunate that there's no way to trash-talk your opponent as he shoots. That feature would go a long way toward making your waiting time more tolerable, particularly when your opponent is on a hot streak. The game's average latency, however, seems to be very short and not a cause of frustration.
Pool Pro Online isn't much to look at. Pool balls are recognizable, and your cue looks like a cue. Apart from that, there's really nothing of particular visual interest. The game's sound is also very minimal, with no background music during play. You'll hear only the percussive clicking of colliding balls on the LG VX7000.
Pool Pro Online is a no-frills game of billiards with some well-implemented online play. While there are more appealing single-player pool games to be found for your LG VX7000, Pool Pro is your best bet for online competition. We hope to be able to do some triple-tap trash-talking in future versions.
