Pokemon Platinum Version Question

What does EV mean?

Ive seen it some places just wondering.

Effort Value, its points that a Pokemon gets when he defeats other Pokemon. Each EV is associated with a stat. Once you get 4 EV points in a certain stat, that stats gets a +1 on your next level up. It's usully used by competitive players to maximize their Pokemon.

    Effort Value. Each pokemon you face will grant you a specific type and number of EV points corresponding to the stat categories of attack, defense, special attack, special defense, speed, and hit points. For every 4 EV pts collected per stat, that stat will increase by 1 point when you level up. Serious players use this to gain an edge in the WFC against other human players. Go on the EV gamefaq and read up on it.
