A great remake of an astounding game.

I have owned at least one pokemon game from each generation, and almost anyone can tell you that the first was the best, cause it was the classic series. In fact, when I got my Game Boy Advance, the first game I bought was Pokemon Red (Never played one of the games back then). That game was amazing beyond belief. Then came GSC, and I had Crystal, and those games were alright, except the levels were really low except for Red. Then came Ruby/Sapphire. Those games blew away the old formula and brought Pokemon into the modern age. Then came remakes of Pokemon Green and Red (The original Japanese titles), as Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen.
And I must say I am impressed.
The remakes features nostalgia upon more nostalgia if you ever played (and liked) the originals. The gameplay mechanics incorporate the new pokemon of course, but only after you beat the Elite 4, so it's almost a pure remake of the original. Even the PokeDex entries are translated from the original Green/Red (US Pokemon Red/Blue were not the original descriptions). While some features I miss from Ruby/Sapphire (Mainly the Secret Base and Record Sharing), this game stands up on its own.
Kanto is just about the same as it had always been. One thing I really like about this game is how fast the battles are. If you compare it to the DS Generation IV games, you'll notice that these battles fly by compared to the long animation sequences that you'll see over and over again in D/P/Pt. (You can turn them off).
The formula stays tried and true. I still don't really like all the new pokemon from Generation III (Gen IV is awful). There's not really much to say about the formula.
They did experiment quite a bit with these remakes however. There's these move tutor people that are like People TM's who teach specific moves. They also added the 'Sevii' Islands (Theres like 9 total but you can only access 7 cause 2 are events only), and they feature nostalgia packed Generation II music. A FANTASTIC invention is the Vs. Seeker. You run 100 steps then use it, and trainers on screen may want to immediately have a rematch. It's the one thing that every pokemon game needs; Training against wild pokemon is incredibly long, and gets really dull really quick. The Elite Four levels up after you beat some of the Sevii Island's events. It is MUCH easier to raise Pokemon in LG/FR than it is in R/S.
Overall, if you only thought Red/Blue was okay, then this game might not be for you. If you're trying to catch em' all, then I guess you'll probably be needing this game. Or both. You'll need like all the pokemon games really. I thoroughly enjoyed this game, and I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to play a good, psudo-old-school pokemon game.

And yes, I did not proofread my review as I'm lazy.
