Why does Final Gambit not do nothing on Ghost's and the user gets to keep their health, whereas Selfdestruct/Explosion still does nothing to Ghost's but the user faints? I don't see why just because it does a set amount of damage, Final Gambit is safe. I learned this the hard way on a Solrock. I had a Compoundeyes Pokemon up front that knew thief, but I switched to Banette because it had Frisk. I Frisked its Comet Shard, then it blew it self up with no damage to me. When a Basculin uses Final Gambit, it doesn't kill itself, even if I use Banette. Below are the descriptions of each attack courtesy of Serebii.net

    Final Gambit:
Battle Effect: The user risks everything to attack its target. The user faints but does damage equal to the user's HP.
Secondary Effect: User faints. Does damage to the opponent equal to the amount of lost HP on the user.

    Selfdestruct
Battle Effect: The user attacks everything around it by causing an explosion. The user faints upon using this move.
    Secondary Effect: User faints.

    Explosion
Battle Effect: The user explodes to inflict damage on those around it. The user faints upon using this move.
    Secondary Effect: User faints.

Need for physical contact to commit vs simply blowing up and hoping it hits?

    This.

Explosion/Selfdestruct simply destroys the user first, then the effects of the explosion hits the opponent. Final Gambit requires the user to actually have physical contact with the opponent before performing the move. I'm assuming it's the same thing when missing the opponent because of accuracy/evasion.
