Mark kicks seven shades of nostalgia out of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale in our review.
Returned the game after realizing how bad it truly is...the paid dlc makes this game even more soulless than it already is.
Got the game yesterday. It's...adequate. Not as charming or fun as Smash Bros. or Power Stone. Not as technically demanding as Street Fighter of The King of Fighters. I think the review is right on: Battle Royale is decent at a number of things, but it doesn't really excel in any area.
After playing it at my friend's house, I agree with Yahtzee's comments, this is the Jusice Legue movie to Smash Bros's Avengers trying battle something that already won years ago and is at home polishing its trophy.
Just got this game yesterday and I'm having a blast. I really don't have a clue on what this reviewer is complaining.
@jocaju u shouldnt think of wat the reviewers r thinking. if u like a game then its a bonus for u. these review are just OPINIONS, the games' existence does not hinge on the thoughts of these reviewers.
despite all of the comments previous, and likely after nothing mentioned really matters. lets face it, the game has potential to be good. yes it is an imitation of smash bro, yes it has errors we clearly see. Sony will fix it and get better. smash bro didn't start perfect we had nothing to compare it to, now its the standard of this style of game-play and Sony made their trial test version. some of the errors may be fixed with updates like they do with most games, other parts may be improved if not fixed, but the game itself is fine. the game play is layered, some difficult some hard. however, for Sony players, many of us have been waiting for this kind of game on our systems, so Nintendo doesn't monopolize this type of game. personally i love brawl but don't connect to the characters because i grew up with Sony. this game answers that need and i know im not alone in saying that.
it will get better, and it will improve with time, but for now i am going to go out and buy this game to support it, because i see the potential and i see something i can enjoy.
there are only a few games where multi-player is not all online, Sony needs to make more, this game is the start of that and it dips into a new player reserve previously forced only for Nintendo, it was a good move, they will need to work out the kinks, but that is how it is with anything new.
Lol critics is too funny i brought this game yesterday and im having fun playing it I like it, my friends that come over and play this like it and im having fun online , i wasnt going to get this game cause of the review but,... thanks to walmart having this game for 39 dollars i said why not. fun game my opinion. check it out if you want peace.
But I digress. Guys, give this game a chance. There ARE some balancing issues, which...for some reason I don't believe he mentioned, but if you can get past that I think the game has a lot of potential. However, I would not pay the full $60 for a copy. Not enough content. I would see this game as more of $30-40.
The video reviewer didn't really seem to know what he was going on about I think. It's an in depth game (as he said) which is typically known as a good thing but then he basically infers that this is a bad thing with this game since it's supposed to be silly. Yet the underdog fighting games like the anime fighters are usually pretty simple and get horrendous scores because they lack depth. So...you get a fighter that CAN be button mashed with certain characters. He also described how getting good with one character would not translate well to another. Isn't that also a good thing? If all of the characters handle the same then why would anyone bother?? I feel that the juxtaposing the depth and chaotic charm is enthralling personally. I enjoyed the Dissidia type of ruling for actually gaining KO points, since it delivered a new way of using the fighting mechanics. Other games such as the old Dragonball Tenkaichi games were seen as rubbish and non sense to most gaming sites. Yet 2 and 3 were among the best because they had hidden layers of technicality and ways to play. Be them exploits or cancels or simple strengths in other characters. Granted when you have 80 plus characters, you are going to run into some similarities.
this is a very good game. i think you people need to buy it or play the demo to start saying is cheaper then smash bros, i like samsh bros! but this games foe me is much better. ( but really play the DEMO first ! dont look at some review video and say it sucks just cuz the video said it.) ( an Gamespot is giveing low grades on a lot of games that are pritty good . )
Hey guys, sorry to get in the way of the argument...but what is the name of the background music starting at 2:58? I MUST HAVE IT! xD
The original Smash Bros was graded as a 7.5 back in 1999 so I would take this review with a grain of salt. Who knows how this game will be remembered.
Back then, the reviewers and users viewed 5.0 as actually mediocre, and anything above worth playing, unlike now with this sh*tty mentality in which they view 7.5 mediocre and anything above worth playing.
Check other scores of praised games by fans from various 5th generation consoles.
I had about a week's worth of hope for this game. Good to know I didn't waste too much of my time over it.
@joesguy The game is actually really good. If you like smash and mvc style games. This is for you.
@No_Intelligence Actually, if you're into those types of games, you'd play Smash Bros.
@No_Intelligence Sir Dan isn't bad, but why would you opt to play as him when you can play as the cheap popular characters from Sony's flagship titles? If they wanted to gain my interest, they'd put time into making all these characters interesting.
@No_Intelligence Just because I merely agree with the review doesn't mean I've somehow not played the game. Is it so inconceivable that I might hold such unfavourable views? You made a similar remark regarding my view that the roster is weak. Again, this is not in comparison to SSBB, it's weak on its own merits. I had zero interest in playing as any of these characters in a brawler. I may have let it slide with sackboy, Fat Princess or Sir Dan, but the rest clash horribly with the more "charming" angle they were hoping for.
The combat system, while interesting, falls in the trap of not being all that technical and certainly not as accessible as Smash Bros. A system which caters to both wasn't going to be easy, but then why not just simplify it? There's no reason for it to be as bland as this, where it just comes down to building a super meter. They could've implemented an HP system which would've worked decently enough.
Depending on how much content the next Smash Bros. has, it will trounce this utterly confused game. But as it stands now, I'm just not impressed.
@joesguy @No_Intelligence Also, I think Sir Daniels is an awesome character. His shield allows him to absorb AP, and his wide leveled attacks work well with his level 1, because it baits a lot of jumps. His level 2 is just awesome. So I don't think he's bad at all.
I was not trying to mispresent you and I am sorry if it came accross that way. I don't think you understood what I said. When YOU say that I will not convince you that PSASBR is a better game and that I have not given any reasons to rebuke this review, SOUNDS like you haven't played this game. Because why would you still base your thoughts about this game from this review when you own and played this game?
When you say that you feel this combat is obtuse and has no place in this game. I understand and I can accept your opinion. But when you say the roster is weak, it is unfair. Because while brawl has a strong roster, it doesn't mean that PSASBR has a weak roster.
It will be difficult argue against that: the levels in PSASBR is better. The combat system is deeper and more interesting, as each character has their unique combos and attacks to defend their space or to collect AP. PSASBR has an ONLINE component. PSASBR scoring system encourages action, while SSBB encourages survival.
This game has already replaced my go-to party game (any smash title) with my friends, and yes they are readily available. All my friends who have played smash know how brawlers work, so they just jump right into PSASBR and it is very accessible for them.
@No_Intelligence I like how you completely misrepresent my position in an attempt to pick out non-existent faults in my reasoning. Why would people have to convince me of something that I've experienced and made an informed decision on myself? Frankly, an indepth and, frankly, unnecessarily obtuse combat system has no place in a game such as this. This is a game for Sony fans, the roster is weak and unbalanced. People complain about Smash Bros. having overpowered characters. I can play as Jigglypuff just fine, but god help you if you want to play as Sir Dan (and indeed he is the ONLY character I was interested in playing with)
Based on these mere two points of interest alone (and there are more) to say PASBR is intrinsically better than Smash Bros. is objectively asinine. There is nothing on offer here that SSB does better - Better roster, more variety, more accessible. You can call it better all you want, but this game will NEVER be the go-to party game if SSBB is readily available.
@joesguy When you say that people haven't convinced you the game isn't a ripoff or given you enough reason to not believe this review, all makes it sound like you haven't played this game even though you said you have.I don't think All Stars has an identity crisis, just the critics expecting this to be just like smash, but instead they got something new, deeper, and much better. The critics expected to jump in and play this game like smash because they were once so good at brawlers, but to find out that they have to add to their brawler skill set to succeed.
Regardless, it is sad to say that a passionate fellow smash player like you missing out on the great online and local fun, as well as the leaderboard.
@No_Intelligence And yet the armchair review of you and your friends will not convince me that it's a Smash Bros. ripoff which also somehow manages to have an identity crisis. I've still yet to see anyone satisfactorily rebuke any of the criticism brought up in this review.
I agree that it isn't as accessible, but the gameplay is much better than SMB in my opinion. They designed the characters well, each character feels like you are playing that character, whereas SMB has more characters, the characters play very similarly to each other and there are several clones of each other.
I play SMB a lot with my friends, but we all agree that PS all stars is a better game and it will now be our new brawler game to play.
@No_Intelligence How am I missing out on the game when I've already tried it? It has a weak roster, uninspired gameplay, is nowhere near as accessible as SMB. This is very unlikely to replace Smash Bros. as the go-to party game, given the above points.
@joesguy I play smash bros all 3 versions, and I like them and I am very good at them. But PS all stars is a better game. I am trying to share with you that you would be missing out on a fantastic game.
Regardless of what I hear the game is excellent...it is just not better than Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

nice try playstation should have just tried and done a anime one but i think nintendo has that to
Woow this review was painful to watch. This guy had no idea what he was talking about. He said this game was way more complex than professional fighting games like street fighter and tekken for example. LMFAO! The game has a bit of a learning curve that's too difficult for his tiny brain to comprehend and the score loses points over it when these qualities should be rewarded. Note to gamespot: this reviewer is no longer allowed to review fighting games. Ever.
Awww poor babies don't like it when their smash bros copy didn't score that great.
@shadowdoggg I don't care if it scores bad. It just sucks to see good games not sell well. Lets hope it sells better over the holidays.
@shadowdoggg Until you play the game, you know nothing but what this reviewer said. If you read around. most people that has played it or even gets their info from else where disagrees. Why do you think that is? Could it actually be a good game despite the review. Also it's not the score, it's the review itself. They said the same thing about Tekken Tag 2. The game is fun to jump into and have fun but has much dept with fighters to get into competitive play. Yet that game was praised for it and this was not. That's a problem. There is even a distinct difference between good Smash Bros. players and just casual players. Competitive play in Smash Bros. is a whole other ball game. Trust me, I've played many tournaments.
@Gelugon_baat You've lost your mind haven't you? Your like a broken record, and for the record I try to get people to try the game despite the review. Not to agree with my complaints about it. Why would I waste my time doing that? You know nothing of my character nor my intentions so stop acting like you do.Please tell me if i'm wasting my time. You keep saying the same thing over and over and never noticing the problem. Your lack of understanding is annoying at this point and I'm really done now. I have no reason to talk to you anymore. You've clearly given up but continue to destroy and demean your character by replying. I'll end this for you because now I feel like I'm nit picking things to say just to get you to crack. I should have stopped a while ago but I wanted to see how far you would go. Who'd guess the pond would be a puddle? Little substance. Good bye... (For real).

@Shabo883 GameSpot deleted my other comment. This has happened one time before. That or I just can't find it. Lol Silly.
Gameplay wise now that I have the game for Vita only I can say that they nailed it. Kratos is so familiar and we've played him in SC and MK so he feels overpowered at the moment. However, time will tell because I am learning some technology with Nariko and of all people Fat Princess. FP is great in this game. LOL! Ok now for the bad news and I mean bad news. The ingame is fantastic and I have no complaints there. The menus, backgrounds, icon art... one word to describe it. Hideous. This is not the sheen of other first party software from SCE studios. I mean... it is atrocious. When you think of the grace of the PS1 opening Sony gold standard production values this is piss poor and MUST be patched before the games Japanese release. Admittedly this game is fun no doubt about it just stopping to take a break. If you are more of a traditional fighting game player you will like this game and it will come naturally to you. This game is closer to MVC than Smash in all honesty. The only Smash feeling thing is the 4 player FFA. This game is good 1v1 and will take time to master. I really am enjoying the gameplay but I hate and I mean hate how this game is presented. I had to support the effort though because I love fighting games.
This is a great game. I've been playing smash 64 since day 1 and I still play it with my buddies sometime. I think this game will replace it. Each character other than the Coles are very unique. It feels like a cross between smash and mvc3 just because of the air juggle you can do.I do agree with the ugly UI comments. I personally hate ugly UI.I can understand why people don't like the super kill only mechanic. Most players will end up using level 1s, and characters with best level 1 supers are gonna dominate online at the moment. Super kill only makes it near impossible for the game to generate clutch gaming moments. Regardless, as a fighting game, this one is fantastic.I give this game at least 8.0
No tense moments!? Give me a break, there are VERY tense moments. I.E. Timed mode when the battle goes into overtime and you get a minute to rack up as many kills as you can before the guy your tied with, Stock lives mode when it's down to 1 on 1 and each player has 1 life left trying to dodge each others special, incredibly tense right there.
So this game is bad because you have to be good to play it?? I feel like all the negative things that were said about this game are what is great about most games. So we are punishing developers for making challenging and complex games? What is the world coming to? I admit it is no smash bros. but I absolutely love this game. To each their own I guess.
I'm so glad I didn't listen to this reviewers opinion, I would have missed out on a truly great game if I did. This game is amazing, only complaint I have is the story mode kinda sucks, but everything else is perfect!
This review was very unhelpful and I don't really trust GameSpot reviews anymore. Haven't for a while, I felt they were wrong about Resident Evil 6 and Zombie U, and they are definitely wrong about All-Stars.
If you enjoy Party Fighters, you owe it to yourself to pick this up. It looks like Smash Bros on the surface, but in practice and gameplay they are very different. I'm a fan of both games, they both have their place.
Mark?! Who is this reviewer? This review was frickin' Awesome!!! Technical, informative, aesthetics... this game review was literally perfect!

Hey just for the record, i never said all that i said, i guess thats just my brother who doesnt like this game or whatever reason, i deleted my comments and leave you two at whatever your at. I personally love this game and love the fact that we get a game similar to smash but an entirely different game.
@Gelugon_baat @FusionRain hi bitch! what's up? long time no see..how's your trolling lately?
@Gelugon_baat Once again you failed to realize that I've said I do understand and acknowledge. I do think it's a poor review and have never said anything I've said was fact. What are you talking about? ONCE MORE you've failed to reply to each aspect of my comment! You completely ignored the part about your character just as Shabo said. I don't mean to agree with his ways of communication but you continue to do the same thing over and over again. Stop talking about what I did or how I feel about this review because it's not the subject at hand. I really can't believe you don't get this by now. It's not about anything here but your incompetence. How in the world do you continue to go in a circle and continue to fall into the same hole? I really am baffled at this point that you don't understand. Really now. What else do you have to say because this has went from bad to sad. Are you gonna seriously gonna keep claiming I've done something that is apparently causing an uproar, or are you gonna recognize this is about you!?
@Gelugon_baat That's a lie. Like I've said before. I'm my original post I've stated that I understand that this is a review and just an opinion. That's acceptance right there. I have acknowledged them because I've talking about them where as you just ignore things. Once again you failed to realize that you are trying to pin this review stuff on me when my conversation with you wasn't about the review itself. It was you jumping on people's backs. I just so happen to also not like it. The reason is irrelevant.
@Shabo883 @Gelugon_baat This is another example of how being selective creates an unbalanced argument. Blatantly ignoring parts of a comment or whole comments all together won't make them go away. This is very potent to her style and can be seen done in almost every comment that is a reply to a comment that has noted more than a few things. Dissecting my post bit by bit but leaving out what she doesn't want to talk about. Has a opinion on everything except what's in her face. I really wouldn't mind too much if she could back up her own word instead of just saying. I've encountered this many times. That's an empty statement and means very little to what is the matter t hand. Saying that only makes you think your somehow wise and smarter than others when all you can base their intelligence on is how they feel about a game or the text they post in these sections.
@Shabo883 @Gelugon_baat You really shouldn't point other peoples lack of understanding or whether they've been schooled, Shabo.
