The Playstation 3 has improved immensely from the Playstation 2.

can also play all PS1 and PS2 games
can surf the net
free built in wi-fi
can play PS3 games against friends from around the world for free
built in Blu-Ray player
can still play DVDs
can transfer PS1 and PS2 data to internal memory cards without losing data
has multimedia like music, movies, and pictures
can connect peripherals like digital camera, i pod etc
has a lot of free memory space
failure rate is very slim
controller is lightweight, wireless, and can be charged by plugging USB port to controller and console

Cons: (minus 0.5)
kind of expensive at first
is bulky and fat
PS2 peripherals won't connect (like PS2 controller)

Overall, the Playstation is a revolutionary system, but it's pretty expensive at first. I would wait for either the price to drop, or buy it when you have enough money. If you still want to play Playstation 2 games, get the older, fatter Playstation 3 models because the Playstation 3 Slim does not play Playstation 2 games.
