Why doesn't Sony just drop PS1 backwards compatibility with the PS4 already?

How many people still actually play physical PS1 games on their PS3 nowadays? Besides, they would get more money from selling HD remakes of PS1 Classics like they do now. This is 2013, not 2003. Backwards compatibility with a system that came out over a decade and a half ago is no longer necessary in this day and age.

There's no reason to remove it. That's why its here to stay, and the emulator is pretty much perfect and of no expense.

Plenty of people still play PS1 discs on their PS3's.
If they can have PS1 BC work on the PS4, then there's no reason not to put it in.
Hell look at Nintendo, their handhelds started going downhill when the original DS came along, you wanna know why? Because that's when it stopped supporting all previous Nintendo handheld games, with the GBA you could play GBA, GBC and GB games, with the DS it's just DS and GBA games.

Seriously hoping this is a joke topic. If it weren't for PS1 games you wouldn't have your PS3 games. As with everything, don't mess with the originals and don't diss them, they are what makes the new product what it is. That being said, having PS1 games on the PSN combined with their reasonable pricing is amazing and probably what sells the most on the store.

The PS2 was a more popular system than the PS1. Yet Sony later removed PS2 backwards compatibility with the PS3, so I can't play my massive PS2 collection with the "benefits of modern hardware" unless I own a launch PS3. Seeing as how expensive and prone launch PS3s are to YLOD, it's cheaper just to buy a PS2 Slim. Unless Sony decides to put PS2 backwards compatibility back in with the PS4, I see no reason why they should still include PS1 backwards compatibility with it either.

Because its super easy to emulate PS1 games... whereas its much harder to emulate pS2 and PS3 games.

The PS1 was my favorite system ever but it's true a lot of the games have aged poorly.
Still I love a great portion of the PS1 library. The JRPG genre peaked on the PS1 in my opinion (and has been downhill ever since) and I love the classic survival horror games (RE 1-3 and SH 1) on the PS1. Plus Castlevania: SotN and Metal Gear Solid.
I play all those games fairly regularly.

Graphics don't make a game better.
Not every game gets an HD make over.
There is no reason not to have BC. It helps bring a bigger library to your console and draws in players from your former console.
I am sure the moment Sony decided to discontinue BC for PS2 games on the PS3, a lot of PS2 players just went for the Xbox because it was cheaper at the time.

2. HD remasters of PS1 games would be next to impossible without rebuilding the game completely
