I'm trying to picture what you mean. If I'm walking around in an RPG (I'm imagining FF4, my all-time favorite) you mean you want to see little enemies on the overworld map and choose to walk into them or not, kind of like Zelda 2?
Yeah, or like Earthbound or Dragon Quest 9. Or Xenoblade or FF12.

Polite conversation should never include Politics, Religion or what constitutes an RPG.
Playing a game for it's story is like watching porn for it's story.

FF13-2 style is best. Enemies suddenly appear but you have plenty of time to avoid a fight.

That's kind of a stupid point to make though. RPG's were my favorite games growing up and yet I've ALWAYS hated random encounters, yet still enjoyed the game. If they could be eliminated by showing the enemies on screen such as the many games mentioned already, then why not? It would be a huge improvement.

OK, so yeah pretty much like Zelda 2. As long as you have a way to grind levels before advancing, I'm fine with either method. Something I did like in Dragon Warrior that I've never seen anywhere else is that weaker enemies actually run away once they realize how much stronger you are.

There's a few that do that - Persona 3 has that happen, I think, and Ni No Kuni does that. Makes it kinda hard to get some of the weak, fast-moving guys at times unless you sneak up on them or trap them in a corner.

Sorry, I like them. Play other games. There's far, far FAR more games without them than there are WITH them.

I like this line. I want to use this line any time someone complains about anything about a game, including a genre.
Guns? That line works.
Racing? That line works.
Stupid sidekick characters? That line works.
Whiny fans? Okay, that line won't work there, but still!

The problem I have with games that do not include random encounters (as in you can see the enemies before you fight, like Ni No Kuni, Persona or the Tales games) is that I tend to avoid a lot of the enemies if I am able to just to try to progress through the story faster. This in turn makes me a lot lower level overall and when the unavoidable boss fight comes up, I get completely stomped and have to go back and level up again. At least with random encounters, you are kinda forced to level up to the right level if you are thrust into a battle every so often.

These days, all the kids are playing M rated games while the adults are lining up for Pokemon. Which game is a kid's game now?

So most of you guys likes those annoying random encounters with 2 - 5 seconds intervals?
That needs to die already. This isn't the 90's.

So far you haven't provided a single logical reasoning to get rid of them.

Really? I haven't seen a single logical reason to NOT get rid of them, while I've seen plenty of good reasons TO get rid of them.

Except there have been games that don't have annoying levels of random encounters. Ar Tonelico has it about perfect for randoms. There are a certain amount in a room, and dthen eventually they stop spawning. Your levels are pretty much always correct after that point. There's no need to ever really grind.

Random encounters died with Chrono Trigger back in 1995. ANY game that made use of that design from that point on was just poorly designed.
It's a relic. A dated mechanic. A scheme to deal with limited hardware.
