I'm planning on buying the DMC collection, but I'm worried that this is a game I would not be able to finish because of difficulty.

Is it Dark Souls hard or God of War hard? I can handle GOW's difficulty not no DS's
  • Nov 15, 2012 7:09 pm GMT
No. Devil May Cry 3 can be off putting...But there is an easy mode...even tho the easy mode is harder then most games hard mode...It's still way easier then normal or hard...and DMD...Yeah...

Well.. I haven't actually gone through the entirety of Devil May Cry HD Collection (PS3), but I did 100% the original PS2 versions..

    Devil May Cry
    Devil May Cry 2
    Devil May Cry 3
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition

This collection has the Special Edition version of DMC3 which is a tweaked version (difficulty adjusted for the most part) with a Vergil Mode. From what I remember, I played the games on Normal/Standard difficulty, then I played again higher and higher til I finished Dante Must Die Mode and Heaven or Hell I think it was called.

It's really not that hard. You just have to get used to the gameplay mechanics, and the game rewards you for comboing.

Just play the game on the Normal settings for the 3 games included. There are health items, Holy Water (wipes out most enemies), revival orbs, etc. Just know that melee combat (swords) do more damage whereas guns are mainly for combo related actions as well as distancing yourself from enemies/bosses.

No, because there is the option to select Easy difficulty level.

TC, if you are talking about Normal difficulty:

DMC1: Fairly difficult. Final boss is a damn annoyance.
    DMC2: Easy. Best gameplay though.
DMC3: Hard. Kicked the crap out of me.

It actually varies from game to game.

DMC1 is a bit closer to Dark Souls' style of difficulty in that ultimately the game boils down to your technique, managing your Devil Trigger resource and knowing your enemies. Enemies have a tendency to attack from off-screen, though they all have distinct audio cues (And large telegraphed attacks) to accompany them. You also have to be very deliberate as mashing on the attack button mindlessly is a good way to get yourself killed, seeing how enemies will parry and counter attack if you get sloppy.

It goes both ways though; you can absolutely wreck most everything in the game if you know what you're doing in no time flat as nearly everything has a hard counter, a easy enough strategy to exploit, or a critical hit opportunity you can set up if you're really good and you know what you're doing (Which you likely won't). Most of the bosses in the game are also rough with Phantom (First boss in the game on Mission 3) being a huge brick wall for most players.

DMC2's mostly crap. Dante feels more stiff and unresponsive and some abilities are cumbersome to pull off consistently (Especially shooting two enemies at once). That isn't to say the game is hard - It's ridiculously easy as Dante has absurd health and guns typically wreck everything, it's more tedious if anything.

DMC3 though is much more in line with God of War. From DMC1 to DMC3, the combat ended up going from this deliberate style game to an outright bombastic spectacle and the enemies were dumbed down a fair bit as a result. All enemies have one to three moves at most with obvious tells/audio cues that only attack while on screen. This means you can manipulate the camera to keep enemies from attacking. Dante is super responsive to boot meaning you don't need to plan a strike or two ahead, most of the time you're just flying by the seat of your pants as crap explodes all around you.

It's not brain-dead easy as enemies hit hard and bosses can be rough (At least up until about Mission 5 before the difficulty/learning curve starts evening out), but it's an easier game than DMC1 for certain. The only thing DMC3 really had going for it difficulty-wise is that 1.) Dante didn't really have adequate tools to fight the first three bosses elegantly when you encounter them and 2.) the levels were typically much, much longer than in DMC1. That second part isn't as much of a problem as they addressed that with the Gold Orb mode difficulty modifier that gives you reasonable checkpoints which weren't present in the original release of the game on top of bumping every difficulty in the game up a peg (So S.E.'s Hard is Original's Normal)

DMC1 and DMC3's really worth a shot though.

It's hard to gauge difficulty, because everyone is different. I thought Dark Souls and Demon's Souls were pretty easy, albeit punishing, games. I didn't have much trouble with GoW either on their hardest difficulty settings.

But, if you throw me in front of something like Jak 2, and have me do the Time Trials or the Weapon Courses, I'd struggle my ass off.

Wow further at people who say DMC3 is hard.

Even ON Hard the game isn't hard. You don't take insane damage if you are even somewhat responsive to the world.

DMC3 is Hard, but it has the Best Gameplay
DMC1 is Mediumly difficult, and has the second best gameplay
DMC2 is incredibly easy and the gameplay is awful

DMC1 isn't too bad, in the HD collection, until you get to the end. There's a type of enemy that can literally lock you into a combo that takes off huge chunks of your health every hit.

They're easy to beat once you get used to them, but they're the only majorly difficult thing I encountered.

By todays standards it might be considered difficult, but when it came out you just took it like a man and played the damn game because it was worth it. I don't recall anybody whining about its difficulty the way they do about Demon's Souls. I do remember Dante Must Die mode being a pretty tough challenge. If you don't think you can handle it then HTFU.

I think DMC1 is the hardest on DMD, not so much the enemies, though I did get killed a few times by DT'd Shadows and Sin Scissors

It was Griffon 3, Nelo 3, and Nightmare 2/3 that I had the most issues beating.

DMC3 isn't too bad on DMD if you beat very hard before it and use the Super Dante/Vergil costume with the Beowulf, since that weapon in DT gives you something like an insane 70% damage reduction, but enemies can still hit hard and DT'd enemies can take what seems like an ages to kill.

Vergil isn't as hard to beat as people make out, though some attacks in battle 3 are hard to dodge like when he helm breakers constantly, it usually just involves dodging a few slashes and you can hit him with about 3/4 combos.

DMC2 is just... a bad game. Repetitive tedious gameplay, on DMD enemies have huge health so you are basically doing the slash slash slash combo repeatedly, no cool weapons or moves, story and boss fights are far far worse. The only time where I remotely enjoyed the game was playing as Trish.

I think the first game is the hardest.

I agree with this. Those damn Scissor and Blade enemies were a nightmare and I seem to remember a giant bird kicking my ass on a ship.

I don't remember having any trouble with any enemies in the other games. Especially in DMC3 where the gameplay is more accessible. I'd say the first game is "less casual" than DMC2 and 3.
