If San Andreas is your golden standard for GTA games, and the tones of RDR bothered you, stay away.

In GTAIV, it's a bit more frustrating, since there's no check point system or regenerating health. The cops come at you a lot harder, too. But that's kinda why I like the game more - along with preferring its story and themes, there's also more challenge.

If you didn't like RDR, you should consider giving up on games.
If you write or speak in such absolutes you should consider giving up on communication.

Eh... I guess I just have a hard time realizing that a GTA game could be bad. So far, pretty much everyone has told me that I should keep away from GTA IV, so I might just do that. I thought RDR was kind of boring because there wasn't a lot of in depth things you could do other than a plethora of gambling mini games and other small things here and there. I keep thinking that there has to be more you can do in a city rather than the old western setting where everything is so far away from each other. If people are saying there are less things to do in Liberty City than the entirety of the map in Red Dead, well... I guess I'll take their word for it.
They are not saying that. RDR has a better story than GTAIV & maybe the missions as well.
GTAIV absolutely craps on RDR in things to do & with just messing around in between missions.
It's also much more fun exploring the city in cars, boats & helicopters, finding jumps, causing chaos & finding secrets that wandering the bland fields of RDR.

You should play these games with no real intention of doing everything storywise. Just enjoy the city Rockstar made, do a couple of missions here and there, goof off. No need to be so focused on beating it.

If you hated RDR, GTA4 will feel like a more restrictive, smaller version of it.

Depends on what you didn't like about RDR
Every mission feels very similar with little variety. There are things to do, but they don't offer a lot of depth, they just seem like little 2 minute distractions. Bland story and bland characters. Great physics and nice atmosphere, but everything else is pretty boring.
I think I got spoiled after playing Fallout New Vegas, because this game has so much less than the Fallout games. I wasn't expecting RPG like gameplay, but there's a lot missing in RDR. I maybe would've liked things better if there were more unmarked locations on the map you could discover and maybe find better weapons, join factions, and overall effect the world more. It would've been cool if you could venture out into an undiscovered part of America and try to explore stuff and survive your own, fight off indians play with their trust, open settlements, etc.
You can't really change John Marston's appearance and he isn't that interesting of a character. He's always grumpy (albeit for good reason) and for half the game the great plot revolves around him chasing after two guys and then given the excuse "Oh yeah, we'll tell you where they are but first you have too..." You get that line about 25 times until you get to Mexico where they do it to you again. I kinda of stopped playing at around this point. I only pick it up and play a mission a day hoping something interesting plot wise will happen, but nothing yet.
The game has an amazing atmosphere though, it's really unmatched... Too bad I can't say anything else good about it.

Naw. RDR is infinitely better than that boring garbage so if you couldn't get into an amazing game like RDR, I wouldn't bother with GTA IV.
RDR sucks, just like the Wild West theme in general does. Fact.

anyways i also couldnt get into RDR but i did love GTA IV. if you liked san andreas then you will probably like GTA IV. GTA spoiled me with its fast cars and sub machine guns thats probably why i couldnt get into RDR. ill take a car and SMG over a horse and crappy old rifle anyday.
