E3 2012: In this guided tour of PlanetSide 2, Creative Director Matthew Higby talks us through a worldwide battlefield.
I hope they can bring back the gamefeeling like it was with Planetside. Never experienced something like that again in other games. Hours of organized battle with 300-500 players.
Can't wait to try it!
Wow, you can totally see Tribes 2 DNA in this game, jumpjet, different armor sizes, and even the command circuit (the overhead map view). Interested.
I still don't understand why EA (Dice) haven't took their highly successful Battlefield series into a larger scale MMO persistent world game. It seems they have everything there, just need to make the jump. Super glad SOE is bringing Pside back and so far looks awesome. I signed up for beta, hope I get a chance to take a look.
Because 360 and PS3 cant handle this scale. At this point the HD twins are holding back gaming, we need next gen soon.
@Bootsakah Battlefield Play4Free. Persistent world for an fps? Only sci-fi could do that. A military persistent world would not work.
Hope they do a great job with this one. The original Planetside was the only MMO first person shooter that had any success. I played the original and loved it, of course there is always room for improvement, so far it looks like some great improvements. I hope the free to play (buy upgrades with real cash) method works out and keeps the game populated.
one game this obviously can be compared to is Halo. it is a lot like it: the graphical style, the vehicles, the futuristic setting, the weapons. this, however, has so much that separates it from any other game and so much better than Halo, that I don't really want to go into detail. it isn't necessary. CAN'T WAIT to play this game. I can't believe this is going to be free. that's a win for Sony.
This game's going to completely change the FPS world, DICE better work harder than they did on BF3.
planetside 1 was so ahead of its time, its a bummer that our technology at the time couldn't match its ambitions. this looks like they're gonna perfect what they couldn't in the first. if you never played planetside 1, you missed out cuz it was soooo fun
Im having a hard time seeing how people can compare this to a game like COD or Battlefield. Seems in this game you are always in 1 whole map with all current players fighting over sections of 1 whole world, so instead of picking a map to fight in, the game is a constant ongoing battle that you can join in anytime, this is a refreshing change for a FPS type game.

Looks like they took PlanetSide and turned it into CoD, just like every other modern FPS. :(
@andrewwittmaier Indeed. I wish it had been done with arena style shooting - ie the shots go where you're aiming! I'll play it for sure, but I think I might get disappointed with taking the CoD approach, of course, they've taken that approach because it will probably make more money.
Ideally, it would be fantastic if there are weapons which accommodate both styles.
@andrewwittmaier I played the original Planetside, and although compared to the graphics of todays game it was still the best FPS shooter game I have played to date. I can still remember many great battles in that game. It's amazing to be part of a 10 person squad that is part of a 100-200 person faction fighting equal numbers of people. There were lots of great leaders that organized some amazing strategies and tactics. We would fill up air transports with 3 squads, supported by fighter aircraft, make drops into the middle of an ongoing battle, bust our way into the capture point and put up a massive defense. Seriously, this type of FPS game (MMO shooter) is the future. It was back then and is today, we just need developers to start making the games.
@andrewwittmaier lol last time i checked CoD was INCREDIBLY small maps that sucked for actual sniping and not quick scoping , maps looked pretty big from what i saw =P. not to mention the vehicles? yea......sry no CoD similarities yet =P . or are you going to say its CoD cause its FPS? or that you can shoot ppl? sure then its CoD =) as is BF Halo and other such games =P

@andrewwittmaierAbsolutely not! CoD lone wolf players will be eaten for lunch in Planetside. This is not 8 vs 8, and camping in a corner will get you killed over and over. It's all about teamwork, not trying to get the most kills.
I just can't believe all of the years I played and payed a sub to fund a f2p game with microtransactions. If you honestly think your going to pay less for a game with microtransactions than a game with a subscription fee of like $15.00 a month, you are out of your mind. Secondly I can't believe what sony has done here. You have turned planetside into a cosmetic appearance of its former self. Everything looks great... ok. This does not mean we get rid of the old base structures and include unreal tournament elements like the energy elevator in the video. You have taken apart the elements of planetside and made them into a f2p model to make money, not for the players enjoyment. This is just like battlefield 4 free which took apart battlefield and priced it for profit. This is disgusting and I think I'm going to erase it from my mind. Your taking general empire vehicles and making them empire specific as well as taking the original base structure and making it to where vehicles can enter the bases if they fit, this is gamebreaking. This is going to be pay to win battlefield with a call of duty and or battlefield stat tracker. I just don't know what else to say. Your appealing to the cod crowd and destroying planetside. Look at what battlefield did trying to appeal to the cod crowd. They created something that had elements of battlefield, but it was so alien it alienated the battlefield fans.
@Espryon I would prefer these F2P with micro-transactions to have the ability to just pay to buy it. Let me just give the company £35 or whatever and unlock everything. I don't like the idea of Paying to upgrade or even playing to upgrade. What happens if you hate the thing you've just "bought", what a waste. I don't see the problem with having both in parallel.
The thing is, I'm sure that the F2P model will always be more expensive in the end, unless you like to grind!
Really? You're an idiot.
You're just mad because it isn't a direct copy and paste of PS1 with better graphics.. You hardcore veteran fanboys are truly pathetic. You're even worst then those pathetic CS1.6 kids whining about CS:GO.
I think what you mean by CoD crowd, are those people who never work in a team. Guess what, Planetside 1 did not appeal to them, and neither will Planetside 2. The rest of your premature doom post is silly.
@Espryon wow your complaining about a free to play game right????? right?????
you dont have to pay if you dont want to i dont know how thats bad. Never played the first one and dont care about it, this game looks awesome
@Espryon Want some cheese with that whine? ;)
Until you've actually played the game and not going off 13 minutes of footage, how can you have anything to say about how something is "game breaking"?
And last time I checked, Battlefield 3 played like the other battlefields. Unless you wanna enlighten us all as to how it's different?
@Dirty_Window I've played Planetside for 8 years, me and my dad and brother were in the original alpha and beta. You have no right to criticize me. Especially being from gamespot. I could criticize multiple elements of your website and am just using it because I'm taking summer classes at my college. I was in most of the best outfits in the game next to the hacker outfit trx. I will play this, but I will not be happy about how you are piecing the game out for a profit. This is a sellout copy.
@EspryonI couldn't help but respond, but TRx doesn't support hackers. You're just kinda bad.
If you're going to refute my points, please, be my guest. I have no disagreement that some of the new changes are not to my liking, but I love Planetside and the communication between community and devs has been amazing. They have changed a multitude of things that the players of the original Planetside did not like, for example: Killcam was completely redesigned to not show where the player was killed, ammo pack is going to be transferred from Light Assault, mini map was reworked. To blatantly call their product a "sellout copy" is nothing but petty disrespect to a team that actively works with the community to help improve the game for us, in order for us to enjoy the game even more. When you find someone in Planetside 2 360 no-scoping people and killing people with a knife in the foot, then we can talk about appealing to the COD crowd.
If you played planetside for 8 years, you would realize there never was a "best" outfit, but plenty of very good ones. I doubt your claim that you played for that long.
@Espryon How dare they as a company try to make a profit! I'm sorry Espryon that you're so adamantly opposed to the changes with Planetside 2, and as a player on the TR since 2003 I can agree some things at the moment will take some getting used to, but calling them sellouts? Really? They've taken certain elements from games they feel work well, and I have yet to see anything related to COD in their videos. Does COD offer 64 square km battlefields? Does COD offer 2000 players per battlefield? How about incredible numbers of aircraft, vehicles and infantry that require coordination to work as an effective unit and empire? It sounds like you want a carbon copy of the first Planetside, and that's it, which while PS1 was a fantastic game it still had it's flaws. Planetside 2 is bringing massive scale, coordination and team-play to the PC, doing what no other game, save the first Planetside has done before and being Free to Play means that more people have the chance to enjoy what we experienced in Planetside, and if they have the COD run and gun mentality when Planetside 2 releases, then, they'll be easy targets to pick off by a squad of team-based players.
