User Rating: 6 | Pit-Fighter GEN
The game pit fighter I think is more known for it's arcade brilliance rather than the ported versions. It's a fighting game for sure but what sets Pit fighter aside from other fighting games out there is it's unclean, unpolished and dirty atmosphere. There are many questionable themes present, such as kicking and kneeing your opponent when he's down, drugs and semi-nudity. That makes for an exciting game!

Graphics:
The introduction screen is laughable and makes you want to turn off the game. It basically just says Pit fighter in the most boring shade of yellow you could ever imagine. If you wait a few seconds though the presentations of the challengers (the playable characters) start. It's definitely a nice watch with a few animated pictures for each fighter. As you choose a fighter, he makes a special move and the game begins. The backdrops are cool and varied and include everything from bars and parking-lots to warehouses and ultimate fighting style arenas. The audience is fully animated and consists mostly of bikers, rednecks, drunks, hookers and long-haired freaks. The animations are a little rough and the graphics in general are very gritty. In the audience, this does not matter much because they are supposed to be in the background anyways but the fighter-sprites suffer from a very gritty and unclear appearance. The graphics are what used to be called "Digitized". I'm not really sure what that means but it was used in many games from the same time. A different, more conventional style of graphics on the main sprites could have improved the gaming experience somewhat. The stills of the final fighter you'll meet that pop up every now and then (before the 3rd match and before the 7th) are probably the most impressive piece of graphic you'll see in the game, together with the presentations before the actual game starts. I should also add that the menu screens are incredibly boring.

Sound:
The short pieces of what COULD be described as music are presented in the beginning of the game and as you win or lose a fight. They all sound terrible though. The overall fighting sounds for punches and kicks etc. are alright. Now to the most devastating blow to this game. The samples. There are many samples of people screaming and even speaking. They all sound awful. Some of them you can't even make out. The one that I would pass would be the "You're mine" that the Executor screams at you if he gets a few hits on you if you play on a harder level. Also the "You die" or "You'll die" that torments your speakers as the second image of the big boss appears.

Game play:
What saves this game from a complete plummet into obscurity and oblivion is the game play. I think the whole game is based on a cool idea, and it IS fun with senseless violence, I think the history of videogames has proven that already. After you select your challenger you get to fight a series of matches against various opponents. The fights are played in bars and parking-lots and there is no referee and not rules. After each fight you earn money and you get lifted by a warehouse lift with a mountain of money beneath. It would be cool if you could actually USE the money in some way though. You get to throw shurikens, barrels, crates and even motorcycles (!) at your opponent. There are also weapons you can pick up and fight with, such as knives and sticks. They break after a few bashes though. You have the punch and kick buttons and through combinations you can execute special moves that are different according to who you are playing as at the moment. There are roundhouse kicks, flying kicks, throws and punches available and at your disposal. The characters available are: Ty, a kickboxing champion, Buzz, a powerhouse of a man who is an ex-wrestler and Kato, a karate expert. Some of the special moves are difficult to get to succeed and can lead to a frustrating game play. For example when you play as Ty, when your opponent is lying down you can walk towards him and press the "kick" button and he rams his heel into his enemy's chest. However, this sometimes fails and instead of attacking your helpless enemy you start kicking air above him, your enemy gets on his feet and you are open for attack. Maybe that's the price of cowardice, who knows? You can also use the "double tap" using the direction you'd like to evade into and your character does a special move (Kato is doing some weird jumping and Ty wheels). You need to watch your health as there is no way of getting it back once you've lost it. You get three lives and that's it. The only power up available for grabs is the Power pill (…) which makes you unable to feel pain as you won't get knocked down, and every time you hit someone, they go down. It's good fun to smash people's heads in with assorted junk. Even the audience participates in the fights which is very cool and original. They stab you, shout at you and throw knives and other weapons into the fighting area. You can fight the crowd as well, if they enter the fighting space. The game presents a good and healthy challenge, but gets frustrating at times.

Lastability:
After finishing the game there's nothing to come back for. You can try the game on a different difficulty level (You can set it from 1 to 8)but that doesn't make the game last much longer. You might find the 2 player mode fun as well. Personally, I can think of better ways to spend my gaming time. Playing through the game ONCE is entertaining enough though.

Overall:
This game is a nice play for a short while. Horrible music and sound though. Some more options could have been cool and also a few more unlockable fighters could have been nice. It lacks a bit in sprite collision but plays alright.
