This game is very unique, and may be the only game of its kind. It's a first person horror game. Sounds familiar right? Bioshock, FEAR, supposed scary games. In truth, those games are nothing compared to Penumbra. What makes it so horrifying is that there is at least one question that goes unanswered. One goes down, and another comes up. Basically, though I only played a little past the beginning, the game mostly takes place in an underground shaft. With limited lights and not being able to acquire a sense of direction, the game gives the player more of a feel of insecurity. Another thing is that the only weapons that are found are strictly close combat, besides the rocks and bottles that can be thrown at an enemy, and they probably don't do much to a ferocious flesh-eating monster. There are also extremely good sub-stories. Journals are found of others that inhabited, or still may inhabit, the tunnel which the main player, Philip, has to fight his way out of to survive. The stories are gruesome, and may be needed on your quest of the tunnel, creating a feel of what might be coming up, but can still never be exactly guessed. Every corner that is turned can bring you into something unexpected, giving the player the fright of the game. The game works you're mind, along with giving pure entertainment, and the only reason I gave it a 9.5 was because sometimes if a monster is able to attack you once, it is very hard to hit him back, making a quick death to the player, but getting a realistic feel into the game. Be warned, it can get very annoying. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this game for just about everything in it, and is actually very inexpensive for that good of a quality for a game.
